1 B-4 The Orlando Sentinel, Sunday, October 27, 1991 Rash of church fires rouses fear, faith Hugh Edsall, vicar of St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Gainesville. Edsall, like several church leaders, declined to be specific about how he had increased security, i "If people that are starting the fires are reading the paper, we don't want to tell them our plans," said the Rev. Dave Ezell, minister of music at Northwest Baptist Church in Gainesville. In Winter Haven, where there were six fires in five days in Feb- ruary, churches have become mnrp safptv-minHpd It concerns me that somebody's doing this, but on the other hand, I suspect it's being done, in some sense, for terrorism and I don't want to give in to that.

Rev. Mike Dubruiel associate pastor, Holy Faith Catholic Church "We have been a little more conscious of making sure the church is locked up," said Henry Brad-shaw, a custodian at the Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church in Winter Haven. Some churches feel secure with the safety measures they have and are not intimidated. "It concerns me that somebody's doing this, but on the other ARSON from B-1 night." The Baptist church, destroyed early Thursday morning, is brick, while the Episcopal church is wooden. Parishioners set up a volunteer telephone network to work round-the-clock shifts to guard the church.

"They're very fearful and in the same breath, they're hoping that whoever's doing this will get caught," said Prestridge, who noted church members held their own prayer service Thursday night before joining a service on the grounds of the Baptist church. "They're praying for other congregations. It's as much anxiety as it is outright fear." At least 10 churches in Gainesville also have opted for their own version of Neighborhood Watch. "We're interested in catching them, not just warding them off," said Pastor Robert L. Renfro, president of the Gainesville Area Ministerial Association and pastor of Liberty Church of Gainesville.

"Obviously, the police cannot watch all the churches. That's an impossibility because they don't have that kind of a staff." Many members of the clergy are pleased with the additional police and fire department surveillance. Police are checking church parking lots at night and fire departments are learning the floor plans of churches and locations of nearby hydrants. Although some churches have begun letting parishioners sleep in sanctuaries, authorities caution that could bring greater peril. "That should be a job for trained security personnel or law enforcement," said Lynn Cyprian, Ocala police spokeswoman.

"It could be very dangerous. If they ALLEN' 77 4824 Lake Carlton Drive, Mount Dora, died Friday, Oct. 25. Born In Pikeville, Ky she moved to Mount Dora from there in 1980. She was a homemaker.

Police departments in Gainesville and Ocala received numerous calls alerting them that parishioners would be in church buildings overnight. First Assembly of God Pastor A.L. Lastinger said his Gainesville congregation has spent the last several nights guarding the church. "We'll do it as long as we have to," Lastinger said.

"We don't feel quite as vulnerable because we already have someone on the premises 24 hours a day." Though most church representatives say fear is not causing them to go overboard, others acknowledge that their members want decisive action. "Of course, people are fearful because this kind of thing is done in such a cowardly manner when the buildings are defenseless and we always fear that kind of thing, but the only thing we can do is increase security," said the Rev.
