High in County Ownership of television sets was more than quadrupled in Los Angeles and neighboring communi- ties during 1949, Chairman Richard W. Millar of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce television committee reported today. TV sales in 1949 totaled 270,036, boosting the number of receivers from 79,640 a year ago to 349,676 as of Dec. 31, Millar said in an analysis of monthly sales surveys of the Southern California Radio and Electrical Appliance Assn. "We are eagerly awaiting, yearend reports from Chicago and Philadelphia in the hope that they may verify our belief that more TV sets were sold in the Los Angeles area last year than in any other television city except New York," the Chamber official added.

Possibly in Third "At the end of November, we were some 2500 ahead of Chicago for the year, it it has been, unofficially reported that Chicago sales slumped last month. "In the first three Quarters, we were about 2500 ahead of Philadelphia." Millar said the Chamber TV committee is hopeful also that final figures may show the Los Angeles market as a whole has at last passed Chicago for third place, behind New York and Philadelphia. Managing Director William J. Quinn of SCREAA estimated Los Angeles County has one TV set for each 3.8 families, with one for each 4.6 families in the area covered by the seven Los Angeles stations. A research firm (Coffin, Cooper, and Clay) reported one set for each 4.3 families in Los Angeles and Orange counties as of Dec.

15, Millar declared. Believed Shortage December sales in the Los Angeles area hit 47,041, down from 51,594 in November. Quinn asserted the drop reflected a shortage of product rather than any decline in public interest. Some distributors reported they were unable to keep up with demand in the Christmas rush. Millar estimated the public laid out more than 880,000,000 for TV receivers in the Los Angeles trading area last year.
