The first of up to six trajectory maneuvers mission manager Jim Erickson said from Jet Propul- sion Laboratory. The maneuver involved a series of rocket firings that increased the velocity relative to the sun by nearly 32 m.p.h.—enough to fine-tune its path and put it on track to land on Mars.

NASA initially aimed the rov- er, called Spirit, slightly away from Mars to ensure the third stage of the launch rocket did not trail it to the planet. The rocket stage is expected to sail safely past the research pod. NASA plans to launch a second rover, Opportunity, from Cape Canaveral, on Thursday. The goal of the $800 million double mission is to send the twin wheeled robots roaming across the surface of Mars to prospect for minerals that could indicate whether the planet was once hospitable to life. Kris Leija, 23, acknowledged during a brief hearing that he never met with his probation officer, the Abilene Reporter- News reported in its online edition Friday. On April 27, Leija ran into a burning apartment complex three times, pulling four young children, including an infant in a car seat, from the complex. A day later, he was arrested for violating probation after a deputy recognized him when he appeared on television. Witnesses praised Leija as a hero, but he was later named as a suspect in the apartment fire. No arrests have been made.

Brazelton told The Modesto Bee that he wished to show the public evidence amassed against Peterson. Superior Court Judge Al Girolami issued a gag order last week aimed at silencing lawyers, witnesses and investigators in the case to prevent gossip and evidence leaks that could make it difficult to find fair jurors. Peterson, 30, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.

The district attorney could not be reached Friday for comment. The USGA bought the Russian Tea Room seven months ago for $16 million when the company that owned the site went bankrupt, director Rand Jerris said. Since then, the USGA has found that extensive renovations would be necessary to turn the restaurant into a museum, Jerris said.

The golf museum will remain in Far Hills, N.J. The Tea Room opened in 1926 and closed in July 2002.
