Sign Guestbook at chicagotribune.com/obituaries Death Notices REHORST, VIRGINIA PARENTI The Lord took you July 10, 2003, nee Gaggiano. You bravely battled the incurable blood plasma cancer, Multiple Myeloma for 5 years, and blocked heart arteries for 2 years, fighting to the end to survive.

You went through hell at times from the effects of chemotherapy and endless blood transfusions, cancer centertests and treatments, in and out of the hospital, but you were never warehoused in a nursing home. You had your brain destroying heart attack at home on and body destroying heart attack at the hospital on I was with you both times, both times alone. Some have questioned my refusal toaccept your death, get on with my life and more or less let you gather dust in the mausoleum so to speak, and even my many ongoing tributesin the Sunday Tribune. You were and remain the essence of my life; as you were always there for others in their illnesses, though many forgot you in yours. I will keep visiting you at the mausoleum and enhancing your life and memory through printed tributes as I see fit.

As long as I live and breathe your memory will be in the forefront of family and friends. Yourhusband Paul. GRIFFIN, GEORGE F. It been a long two years. We cherish the memories you created for us.

The unit blew up thousands of miles of Nazi railroad tracks, disrupted telegraph service and stalled supply trains before the beleaguered German army left Greece that year. A mass will be said at 9:15 a.m. Monday in St. John Fisher Church, 10234 S. Washtenaw Chicago. Los Angeles Times Donald James Leslie, inventor and manufacturer of the Leslie loudspeaker, which helped popularize the Hammond organ and contributed to the development of electronic music, died Thursday at his home in Altadena, Calif.

He was 93. Afan of church and theater pipe organs, Mr. Leslie, who was born in Danville, but grew up in California, became enamored of the compact electric Hammond Organ shortly after it was introduced in 1935. He first heard the instrument, which was engineer Laurens low-cost alternative to the pipe organ, in a Los Angeles furniture store where he worked servicing radios. The little electric organ, Mr.

Leslie thought, sounded much like a theater or church pipe organ in the vast furniture showroom. But once he got it home he was disappointed with its sound in confined spaces. So he started experimenting with devices to make the new instrument sound like the pipe organs. When he came up with his hand-built speaker, he offered it to Hammond, hoping for a job, but was rejected. Mr.

Leslie then founded Electro Music in Pasadena, to manufacture his speaker, which became a popular sound- refining amplifier for Hammond organs and eventually those made by Wurlitzer, Conn, Thomas, Baldwin, Kimball, Yamaha and other companies. The also proved useful for portable keyboards, synthesizers and other electronic instruments as they were developed, contributing improved sounds to jazz, rock, blues, gospel and pop music. The Leslie speaker helped adapt electric organs for homes and small studios, clearly expanding the market well beyond churches and large auditoriums. Mr. Leslie acquired 48 patents for the speaker and other musical inventions, as well radio controls for another of his hobbies, model trains.

In 1965, he sold Electro Music to CBS, which made it a part of CBS Musical Instruments. By the 1980s, Hammond finally bought the speaker Mr. Leslie had offered the organmaker four decades earlier, and the Leslie is now built by Hammond-Suzuki USA.
