Walker, 33, ranked 45th in earnings, broke out of a logjam when she birdied the 13th hole. Walker, a 10-year veteran chasing after her third career victory, went on to distance herself from the field with birdies on holes 14, 15 and 16 to finish at 12 under par, 204 for 54 holes. Okamoto, who placed second in last week's Las Vegas tournament, birdied the final two holes to break out of a pack of three players, finishing with 71. Betsy King, who claims the 1987 Tucson Open as among her 20 career victories, and Heather Drew both shot 69 and are six shots back. Nancy Rubin, who shared the first-round lead, 74 and is seven back along with Missie McGeorge.

Ben Hogan Tour Gulf Coast Classic AT GULFPORT, MISS. SATURDAY'S RESULTS PAR 72-72-72216 'X Jfv7 PONTE VEDRA Fittingly, when downpours finally washed out the third round of The Players Championship, a guy named Jodie Mudd was in the lead. A fast-moving front swept across the TPC Saw-grass course and chased the golfers indoors with the leaders on the fourth green. Mudd started quickly with an ea- gle on the second hole, going to 7 under par, one shot better than Hale Irwin and two better than Rocco Mediate. Play will continue this morning at 7:15 am with players finishing the third round before teeing off in threesomes, at the Nos.

1 and 10 tees, at approximately 11:15. Defending champion Tom Kite had made a little move when play was suspended, birdieing two of his first six holes to go to 3 under. He anticipates a long, arduous day as the golfers play today. "Having to play virtually 34 holes of golf on this course, it's going to take its toll by the end of the day tomorrow," Kite said. "The greens are really going to take a beating." Kite added another insight to the turmoil surrounding the condition of the course.

Friday several golfers decried the heavy tourist play that continued until Friday before the tournament. "People will insist this is all sour grapes by the players, but we do have some problems here that have to be improved," he said. "A lot of it has to do with the contractual obligations with the Marriott Hotel I understand the Marriott controls 80 or 85 percent of the tee times, and I'm sure that is a source of big revenue. "I don't guess anything can be done as long as this contract is in effect, but when it runs out, we have to take a long look at doing it some other way. If we have to take a reduction in our Tour revenue by insisting that the course be closed a week or two before the tournament, and if that results in us having to play for a smaller purse, then I think the players would gladly settle for that in order to have a course that meets championship standards.

"I want to emphasize that this is by far the best-run tournament we play. And I want to emphasize that I know Deane Tour commissioner Beman wants these greens to be the best we play. "But he has got a problem. And we've got to address the issue of how to rectify this problem." Orlando's Boesel bolts to tie at Pine Meadows STILL IN THE LEAD KEN STILL shot 1-under-par 71 to keep a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Vantage Seniors tournament in San Antonio, Texas. Still, who shot an opening-round 66, finished 36 holes with 7-under-par 137. First-round co-leader Dale Douglass shot 72 and is tied for second with Harold Henning at 138. Henning has shot back-to-back 69s. Charles Coody, Jim Dent and Robert Betley trail the leader by two shots, all at 139.

Rocky Thompson, one of six players to record a low round of 68 on Saturday, is alone at 140. "The south winds make the course tougher than the north winds," Still said of the higher second-round scores. "I knew the scores would be a little higher." Compiled rem wire reports By Jeff Babineau OF THE SENTINEL STAFF made the putt for eagle. He would tame Saturday's windy conditions with five birdies on the next 17 holes, finishing with 68 to tie Buck Buckner for the tournament lead at 138 heading into today's final round. Buckner, a golf course superintendent from Orange Tree Country Club who opened with 67 on Friday, played solidly again on Saturday, getting to 3 under early before giving away two shots on the back nine en route to 71.

Heathrow's Gary Schroeder, who shot 72, is at 140, one shot better than Jack Davis, of Rolling Hills, who shot 71. Boesel, who had six birdies and an eagle on Friday but finished with a 70 continued his barrage on Pine Meadows' short par-5 holes. In addition to his eagle on No. 1, he made birdies on the three other par 5s, and in two days is 9 under on those holes. Saturday, he hit three of the par 5s in two shots.

Buckner putted well on the front side, rolling in birdie putts on third, seventh and ninth holes. The lead was his alone coming down No. 18, but his 10-foot putt for par slid past the hole and left him deadlocked with Boesel. The leaders will tee off at 12:40 p.m. today.

Boesel captured championships at Pine Meadows in 1984, '85 and '86, and Schroeder was champion here in 1987, when he shot 65 in the final round to wrestle a championship from Boesel. EUSTIS It didn't take Orlando's David Boesel long to forge his way to the top in the middle round of the 54-hole Pine Meadows Invitational on Saturday. Boesel, one of the state's top amateurs, took out a 5-iron for his second shot on the 492-yard, par-5 opening hole, knocked it about 2 feet from the hole and Eckman outruns rain with Pro Stock track record at Gatornationals By Mike Dame SENTINEL CORRESPONDENT with a 4.997, has recorded six such runs herself and will push Gwynn today. There have been 61 ETs below 5 seconds in NHRA history. No one broke the barrier Saturday, but with a cooler track after Saturday's rains, several drivers said ET records certainly will fall today in the three pro divisions.

"Once we get onto something, we stick with it, and we're onto something," Gwynn said of his string of sub-5 passes. "We're ready to win the Winston championship, but it's going to be a real battle todayl." White's track-record-tying ET of 5.281 Saturday left him atop the Funny Car field, while John Force (5.302) and K.C. Spurlock (5.365) are close behind. man his second top qualifying position of the young NHRA season, just ahead of Warren Johnson's 7.307. "We feel fortunate to have made a good run when it counted," Eckman said.

"We worked hard all winter, and I guess it's starting to show. We're going to be a tough team all season." Darrell Gwynn and Jim White maintained their No. 1 qualifying positions Saturday in Top Fuel and Funny Car, respectively, to head into today's final eliminations $4,000 richer. There are 16 qualifiers allowed in the three pro divisions. Gwynn, a Miami native, broke the 5-second barrier Friday with a track-record ET of 4.985 his NHRA-leading 18th career run under 5 seconds.

But Top Fueler Lori Johns, who also broke 5 seconds Friday the top qualifying spot in the Pro Stock division. He collected a $2,000 check for his effort later in the day when the final round of pro qualifying was washed out by more than an inch of rain. "I feel pretty good. I'm in a pretty comfortable spot," Eckman said. "The only place to go is down, but we're in a good position." Things didn't begin on such a positive note for Eckman, however, in the opening rounds of the 21st Gatornationals drag races.

After shaking his tires in early qualifying sessions, Eckman made clutch adjustments and ran a 7.31 Friday afternoon only to have his near-record run erased later because his car was 5 pounds light. Then came Saturday's record run, securing Eck GAINESVILLE As the dark clouds enveloped Gainesville Raceway on Saturday afternoon, Gatornationals competitor Jerry Eckman could hardly con-. tain his joy. "Hallelujah, it's raining, hallelujah," said Eckman, who only an hour before the first raindrops fell eclipsed the Pro Stock track record. "That No.

He was the only member of the Nissan team to drive both cars, and the only one who did not score in the Camel GT points standings. Drivers can score only with the car in which they start the race, and Daly did not drive the runner-up car for the required minimum of three hours needed to qualify for points. Earl, 40, of Larkspur, Calif.jfot 25 points for the victory his 18th in the Camel GT division in 81 starts. "That's just the luck of the Irish," joked Brabham, the two-time defending EV1SA Camel GTP Champion who was upbeat after losing to his teammates. "We're here to back up Geoff and Chip," said Daly, 37, a native of Dublin, Ireland who lives in Nobles-ville, Ind.

"It just worked out that we drove a good race, got some breaks and won. "I am proud to be part of this Nissan team," said Daly, savoring his first Camel GT victory in seven starts. "I couldn't ask for a better team to be with. I know Geoff and Chip ate disappointed in not winning, but they wouldn't have wanted any other car to beat them. We'll share this victory with them." Said Robinson: "It gives me a lot of confidence in Derek and Bob.

They earned their victory. They drove the car, we didn't That's a credit to them that they beat us. It makes me feel good for them nd for the team." Compiled from wire reports 1 maj ija)kiawiwiwAewlWaAMxaai.
