4D Fort Lauderdale New ami Sun-Sfntiwl, Sunday, Oft. 5, 1975 Gators Set A Goal: First SEC Championship By STEVE WULF Staff Writer BATON ROUGE, La. "Nah, it ain't too early to start talkin about the SEC." With those words, Florida middle linebacker Sammy Green declared the intentions of the entire team. With two Southeastern Conference wins, and four games to go, Green and the Gators see the Holy Grail. "We're gonna bust our hearts to get a share of it or win it," said Green, who led the defense which held LSU to one touchdown in last night's lopsided 34-6 victory.

Quarterback Don Gaffney, who threw two touchdowns and ran for another, was feeling good despite bruised ribs which kept him out of the second half. "I don't care what I do personally, I just want to be a part of the first Gator team to win the SEC. We've got four more tough ones. Last year's team may have had the desire, but we also had our letdowns. I think this year's team has benefited from them." "We're looser.

We're not playing as tight," said Green. "We're a better football team on the road, even though we already lost to North Carolina State. Now we've got to beat Auburn there and Georgia in Jacksonville." And Vanderbilt in Gainesville next week. Vanderbilt was one of Florida's letdowns last year. The Commodores won; 34-10, and many of the Gators remember that day in Nashville well.

"It's a deep wound," said Gaffney, "and it still hurts. Believe me, we're looking forward to entertaining Vanderbilt." "A lot of players have something to settle," said Green, "me included. When we left Vanderbilt last year, I thought it was over with." Even Coach Doug Dickey, who is not given to superlative optimism, couldn't see anything wrong in last night's game. "We have some work to do, but we are coming. This is going to be a real good football team if we continue to improve and put things together like we did last night.

There is no question this was one of our best perfromances ever on the road." About the only team member who seemed disappointed was sophomore halfback Tony Green, who gained only 35 yards on the ground last night. "They're keying on me, but there's nothing I can do about it," he said. I'll just have to bide my time. But I've gotta have more room to run." Before LSU ever got a first down, Florida led, 14-0.

Up until five minutes remained in the game, Miami had the ball for only 13 offensive plays, not counting punts, in the second half and only one first down. It could not stop Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers rolled down the field on three long exhausting drives, behind reserve quarterback Vince Fer-ragamo, who had replaced starter Terry Luck. The drives of 71, 82 and 80 yards produced two touchdowns and a field goal. And then Ferragamo, content to have pounded Miami with running backs John O'Leary and Tony Davis, threw a 40-yard touchdown. Miami was, not so suddenly, behind 31-9 without having appeared to defend itself. 5 Someone asked Carl Selmer for the turning point of the game.

"An avalanche has no turning point," he said. The turning point for Nebraska was the insertion of Ferragamo for Luck. While he did not disgrace himself in the first half, Luck was not producing the kind of results that would boost Nebraska in the The roof fell in on LSU with four minutes left in the half. Moreau's pass was intercepted by Henry Davis on the LSU 41 and returned to the 22. One play later, Gaffney hit Chandler on the one.

Then Gaffney hurled himself over for the touchdown. Late in the third quarter, Florida mounted a 93-yard, 10-play drive that was helped immeasurably by a roughing the kicker call when the Gators had their backs to the goal. Fisher hit reserve end Ron Enclade for passes of 17 and 28 yards, and fullback Robert Morgan ran 21 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter as Florida took a 34-0 lead. 106 yards rushing. Miami's running attack was spotty, the effort coming from Tim Morgan who gained 42 yards in 10 carries.

Miami's only touchdown came late in the game against Nebraska's reserves on an 80-yard drive directed by sub quarterback George Mason. Donny Martin scored from two yards out with 2:16 to play. "I don't know what the difference in the second half was," said Miami defensive end Steadman Scavella. "Maybe we let down." "I don't understand it," said Camut. "We knew everything they were going to do.

Maybe we let up." Let up. Let down. Whatever, Miami might have won the ball game before the second half if it had been able to score touchdowns instead of field goals. The first drive was fairly smooth, beginning at the Miami 37 and progressing to the Nebraska 29 before quarterback Kary Baker was sacked for a four-yard loss on third down. Dennis kicked a 49-yard field goal with the wind.

He didn't even play the second half, leaving that to understudies Jimmy Fisher and Billy Kynes. He had some bruised ribs and there was no need to get them any more bruised. "What did I do the second half? I enjoyed watching the game," said Gaffney. Before that, LSU threatened twice and missed one 40-yard field goal.

It had 13 first downs, but none in the first period, and the combined passing or Bobby Moreau and Ken Lyons was 10 of 28 for 106 yards and one interception. "Our passing game is terrible," Coach Charlie McClendon said before the game, and he was right. The game began badly for LSU. Tailback Terry Robiskie broke off-tackle for 27 yards, but he also left the ball behind and Jimmy Rae Stephens recovered. On a fourth and 10 from midfield, Florida's first series, the center snap went not to punter Tom Dolfi, but to blocking back DuBose, and DuBose plowed 27 yards to the LSU 20.

On the very next play, Gaffney hit Chandler over the middle for a touchdown, and after 1:11 and David Posey's kick, Florida led 7-0. 12 2.1 J7 Yds. TO LO 3 Art. II 14 as Cmp. Yds.

Things that weren't working for Luck, worked for him. He hit his first six passes, four on third down plays, and simply took the game away from Miami. "He was doing some things in the second half we hadn't seen in the first," said Miami defensive coach Jim Walden.

"But he had some good luck, too." Walden said that his receivers made Ferragamo look better than he might have, and the Miami defense gave him too much room in the middle. Mike Archer, punting for the first time ever in college, pinned Nebraska back at its own six with a 56-yard punt. Luck fumbled on the second play and Scavella recovered. But two running plays and another sack by Baker drove them back to -the eight, from where Dennis kicked a 24-yard field goal.

Nebraska's first touchdown came after Miami fullback Jimmy Pinkston fumbled on his own 25. O'Leary scored the first of his three touchdowns from the three. Still, Miami came right back. Morgan ran the kickoff back to the Nebraska 48 and five plays later (on passes of 13 yards to Charles Claud and 11 yards to Phil August) Miami had first and goal at the eight. But it could only move to the two in three plays and Dennis kicked his third field goal, tying a UM game record, from 18 yards out.

"I think their football team is more mature than ours," said Walden. "We got beat by a great football team today, we got beat by a great football team last week and i He paused, almost predicting a loss to Colorado Friday in the Orange Bowl. "And we've got to play the hell out of a great team next week," he said. i-. MIAMI PALM BEACH FT.

LAUDERDALE Florida's Largest Oldest Private Postal Service (Continued From Page ID) compared to nine and a half for Miami. The Hurricanes only had the ball twice in the third quarter and had to punt it away both "I think we got cold waiting around so long," said of the offense. "We're young," said Scavella. "We didn't know how to adjust when (Vince) Ferragamo started dumping off passes to the fullback." Ferragamo had an incredible streak of third down conversions after he assumed the quarterbacking from starter Terry Luck. In the first drive of the second half, he hit fullback Tony Davis for 20 yards on a third and nine.

In the second drive, he hit wingback Curtis Craig for 14 yards on third and five and then tight end Larry Mushinskie for 16 yards on third and seven and Craig again for eight yards on third and 10 to the two. In all, Ferragamo converted eight third downs and one fourth down in getting Nebraska's 24 second half points. "Ferragamo threw the ball well," said Selmer; "but he also got some great catches. He easily took the team on what amounted to three sustained efforts and took them to 31 points from seven." As for Miami's offense. it just did not exist in the second half until George Mason led a late touchdown drive against the Nebraska second string.

"Maybe if we'd had a 10th of a second more on passing," said Baker, who was well contained by Nebraska. He was not allowed to scramble free as he did against Oklahoma. "They took our momentum away," said defensive tackle Gary Dunn. "We couldn't get back in the driver's seat. "They beat us going into the win," said Selmer.

The litany could go on and on. The simple fact is, three games into the season, Miami is not as bad as it seemed to be against Georgia Tech and it is not as good as it promised to be against Oklahoma.
