James Barney, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church in this tiny central Wisconsin community. "I wasn't going to let them in if they did." "They" are the "Van Hoofers" or "shriners" followers of Mary Ann Van Hoof, a 66-year-old widow who claims to have had visions of the Blessed Virgin since 1949. 1 Father Barney's decision to bar her followers from attending Mass at his 0 Css TV THURSDAY, FRIDAY SATURDAY 7T ji mm rt 2000 U.S.

AMYTIMF -W fiat-B- fuiiVMart Full Quart Full Quart phurch has increased the split between the Roman Catholic Church and Mrs. Van Hoof's disciples. It is a split which the priest estimates has cut parish membership of about 750 by more, than half; has caused parish income to drop by 44 Jkt cent from the first to the third Quarter; and has some "Van Hoofers" talking about building their own church. The division began when a former jNshop of the Diocese of La Crosse denounced her claims as false in 1955. Then early this year Mrs.

Van Hoof qnd six of her key followers were placed under interdict by the current fcshop, the Most Rev. Frederick freking. Interdict, a rarely invoked cjnsure, forbids access to any church Sacraments except confession. Despite the opposition from the official church, Mrs. Van Hoof contends that she has continued to receive visions and messages from heaven.

Her followers have erected a series of shrines on her former farm, several hundred persons have moved to Necedah and others make regular pilgrimages to pray there. Mrs. Van Hoof and her followers continued to attend mass at St. Francis after Bishop Freking issued his letters of interdict in April. But since lAugust Father Barney has refused fommunion to all persons unwilling 30 demonstrate their public renunciation of the Necedah shrine and its delated activities.

I- The priest, who has been in the arish since 1974, had hinted at plans to keep the shriners out of the church Entirely, and on Sunday announced the new policy in his sermon and parish bulletin advising the Van 2 infers to look for another church to djtend. '-On Tuesday, after kneeling in silent prayer for about 15 minutes; Father Barney asked Mrs. Van Hoof's followers to leave the church before mass began. "It wasn't an order," he said. "I just asked them to leave quietly, and after about a minute they did." Bishop Freking said the priest had hot consulted with him about the Hecision to ask Mrs.

Van Hoof's followers to leave, but he called the action consistent with his own policy. One of Mrs. Van Hoof's followers and a close friend, Betty JValkershauser, said, "He kicked us ut, so now they can't say we left the church. We stuck by it to the last. This is a great victory for us.

Now we can go ahead and build our own church." Yesterday, Father Barney went Jme step further. He stationed himself iit the front door before mass, prepared to turn away any of Mrs. Van jloof's followers who attempted to inter. None showed up. "We don't know what we're going to do now," said Ray Pritzl, who is considered Mrs.

One of, Miss Hearst's attorneys, jUnert Johnson, said last night that y.S. District Court Judge Oliver J. Carter possibly could delay the Dec. ZS trial date until mid-February.

The chances for delay increased "significantly yesterday when the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, ruling 3d the case of Miss Moore, held that a Judge need not count the 49 or SO days used for psychiatric examinations in tthe 90 days required by the Speedy rTriul Act to bring a federal prisoner to trial.
