123456 TRIBUNE 9 By Brett McNeil Tribune staff reporter For 67 years, attorney Irving Meyers defended freedom riders, union workers and suspected communist sympathizers. He sparred against corporate giants of the 1930s, the House Un-American Activities Committee of the 1950s, and Jim Crow segregationists of the 1960s, said his son, Peter, with whom he practiced law for 16 years. Mr. Meyers, 95, died of complications from disease Thursday, Jan. 23, in Wagner Health Center in Evanston.

Opening his Chicago practice with his late brother Ben in 1930, Mr. Meyers at the very cusp of the great sea changes in labor said Leslie Orear, president of the Illinois Labor History Society. Mr. Meyers represented local members of the United Packinghouse Workers of America, a subset of the Congress of Industrial Organizations. Besides handling legal work for Chicago unions in the furniture, farm equipment, and electricity industries, he served as a lawyer to several of the arts-related guilds, including the opera union.

In the 1960s and 1970s, he represented the Actors Equity Association. helped establish the concept that acting was a profession and that an actor who was laid off at the end of a show have to go back to some survival his son said. A charter member of the National Lawyers Guild, Mr. Meyers was the 1948 Progressive Party candidate for state attorney general on a ticket headed nationally by Franklin Delano former vice president, Henry Wallace. A third party that opposed President Harry Cold War policies, the latter-day Progressives advocated disarmament and an end to anti-communist crusades in the U.S.

Although Wallace won more than 1million votes, the Progressives failed to carry any states. In Illinois, Democrat Ivan Elliott won the attorney race, and Mr. Meyers returned to his law practice full time. During the Red Scare of the 1950s, when U.S. Sen.

Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin led purges of suspected communists and their sympathizers, Mr. Meyers represented union officials called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. His progressive activism continued into the civil rights battles of the 1960s. In 1965 Mr. Meyers headed to Mississippi as a representative of the National Lawyers Guild.

Stationed in Pascagoula, he helped enforce the Voting Rights Acts passed that August. The act suspended literacy tests as a requirement for voting. Mr. Meyers was among a wave of civil rights boosters who traveled south in order to register black voters. In 1981Mr.

Meyers and his son formed the second coming of Meyers and Meyers. The pair worked together for the next 16 years. lucky can a guy be to have a dad 67 when you graduate from law school and still work with him for almost 20 his son said. A lifelong Chicagoan, Mr. Meyers graduated from Senn High School, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and John Marshall Law School.

During World War II, he served as an Army weatherman in North Africa. Mr. Meyers is also survived by his wife, Thelma; two daughters, Marcie Leone and Nancy Delveaux; a brother, Arthur; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb.
