The Hawaiians of the New World Football League trimmed their squad to 50 players yesterday in preparation for their season opener next Wednesday against the Florida Blazers in Orlando. The Hawaiians plan to work out here today and tomorrow before departing for Florida Tuesday. (0LJ night meeting, the Dolphins seem to be split on their feelings for striking and it looks unlikely that a team vote will occur. "We are trying to stress individual choice for each player," said "We can't be striking for freedom and at the same time force the players to do something they may be against." Swift emphasizes the rookies will have their freedom of choice, Joo. And defensive end Don Reese, the Dolphins' No. 1 draft pick, has made up his mind. He is one of three rookies Jervis White, Benny Ma-lone who are being excused from training camp to participate in the College All-Star Game July 26.

I plan to report to Dolphin training camp immediately after the game," said Reese. "I'd rather have the players mad at me than the owners." His sentiments were echoed by 15th round draftee Larry Cates, who has been working out at Biscayne for nearly two weeks. "If a rookie has any sense, he'll come," said Cates, "because it's their chance to impress the coaches while the main men are away." The NFLPA received a blow yesterday from a rookie when San Diego's No. 1 pick, Don Goode, returned to his team's rookie camp after leaving the day before. NFLPA representative Ed Podolak of the Kansas City Chiefs admitted the rookies hold an important key to the strike.

"If they go along with it, the camps close immediately and we get the owners to listen to our demands," said Podolak. "If not, and the owners have rookies to play, it delays the whole process of a quick settlement." NFL coaches aren't making it easy on the rookies and free agents. Shula has stat-ed, "It's a great opportunity for a rookie and he might miss that opportunity if he struck." And Sid Gillman, general manager and coach of the Houston Oilers, said, "Any rookie too dumb to report to camp is too too dumb to play for the Oilers." There will be one veteran the NFLPA will not have to worry about. Five-year veteran Jesse Powell, a reserve linebacker who was to report today, announced his retirement. There is a 30 per cent chance of rain but that will not deter the Dolphins or any picketeers.

"It looks like we might get wet," said Alexander. "But I can assure you that we will be picketing until an agreement with the owners is reached. For the first couple of days, we will be trying to get as much exposure as possible. "Initially, we want to have a large contingent," said Alexander. "Then after a couple days, we will have a representative force of five or six guys.

Then, when the veterans are to report next Sunday, we'll beef up the lines again. "Now the picket line may seem unorganized to people watching it," said Alexander. "But that's because we are a bunch of loose guys. But we are not out there just for the hell of it and when it comes to talk business, we can get serious." Alexander admitted he was aware that some of the rookies were already on campus and beyond the reach of the picket line. Previously, Biscayne College President Rev.

John McDonnell said he would not permit pickets on his private property. "Now, there may be some rookies already in camp," said Alexander. "But this is also an instructional picket. As soon as the NFLPA can get in touch with Dolphin coach Don Shula, we are going to arrange a meeting with all 55 players, just like we did with the Dolphin veterans Friday night. We will thereby have a chance to contact all the people we missed on the picket lines.

"Meanwhile, a rookie or free agent or non-regular is free to join the picket line' any time he chooses," said Alexander. "And if a player has any questions he should call the NFLPA at the Howard Johnson's at the cloverleaf. Right now, I am very encouraged by the situation. The Dolphins seem to be behind the strike and picket." But not all the Dolphins are casting their lot against NFL owners. Jim Langer, Jim Mandich and Bob Matheson have all come out against the strike.

Yet it has been only in recent years that any serious studies of the sailfish have been made. Dr. Don DiSylva of the University of Miami Marine Science Department under-, took a study some years ago and had amassed a huge store of information on the sailfish until a disastrous fire destroyed most of the basic material. Now we note that the Florida Department of Natural Resources West Palm Beach Field Laboratory has been working on a sailfish project for over four years, gathering extensive biological data from more than 1,200 billfish.

Head of the Department's entire program is Ed Joyce. The studies were directed primarily at determining sailfish ages, growth rates, reproductive cycles, and general ecology. A report of findings is currently being prepared by the department, and is expected to be essential for proper management and protection of this most sought- after sport fish. John Jolley, head of the West Palm Beach Field Laboratory has developed for the first time a technique to accurately age sailfish. In fact, acceptance of this new technique may enable scientists to age other billfishes as white and blue marlin.

The new process involves removal of cross sections from anal and dorsal fin spines. Subsequent microscopic examination of these sections then permits biologists to count the concentric rings which appear to be annular growth marks. Preliminary results using this technique indicate that Atlantic sailfish grow about 10 pounds per year during the first three to four years of life. Older and larger sailfish grow more slowly. Average age of sailfish caught in Flori- da appears to be three or four years.

The oldest sailfish was estimated to be more than eight years old. Microscopic evaluations of sailfish reproductive tissues indicates that maturity is not reached until the third or fourth year (size 30-40 pounds). Department biologists recently discovered that king and Spanish mackerel also attain initial maturity at about the same age. Sailfish in southeast Florida have a protracted spawning season, May-October. Eggs and larvae become abundant in offshore and near shore waters between June and September.

Estimates concerning the numbers of eggs each female can spawn (fecundity) vary with age. Older sailfish have great fecundities. Fewer than half of each year's crop of eggs ripen to maturity. Spawning of multiple frequency also occurs. The number of eggs shed during one frequency may vary between several hundred thousand in young adults to more than two million in older sailfish.

Sailfish catch and effort data is being obtained from sports fishermen and will be analyzed and published as time permits. Presently, six nrominent sailfish naments are monitored yearly by Department personnel. Data from the 1974 season is nlre-dy i-e'nit HiV to the store and will be utilized to observe fluctuations in Florida's sailfishery. In addition, analyses of Japanese commercial long line reports are providing the Department with valuable sailfish catch statistics from the western North Atlantic. This information will help better evaluate the status of Florida's sailfish stocks.
