Ranchers are going deeper and deeper into the hole to make There hasn't been a heavy rainfall since last fall and cattlemen would "pay anything for a good sod-soaking," Wilson said.

Times' Ex-Columnist Krock Dies The Associated Press WASHINGTON Arthur Krock, longtime Washington columnist for the New York Times whose 60-year newspaper career earned him an unprecedented four Pulitzer awards, is dead at age 87.

Krock, who retired in 1966, succumbed Friday night. He had been in ill health for six months. Krock's exclusive, frontpage stories for the Times and his "In the Nation" column, carried by the newspaper for 33 years, made him a major figure in American journalism. He had been a Times staff member for five years when then-publisher Adolph S. Ochs named hhim chief of the newspaper's Washington bureau in 1932.

Krock demanded from his staff the same enterprise and accuracy that were hallmarks of his career. "You've got to know as much about the subject you're handling as the men who are making the news," he once advised. "And for God's sake, try to keep it simple." Krock himself became an authority on President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal," and his stories on the administration's fiscal policies led him to receive the 1935 Pulitzer Prize for reporting excellence. In 1937, Roosevelt granted him an exclusive interview that resulted in his second Pulitzer Prize.

The Pulitzer board awarded him a special commendation in 1950 for a similarly exclusive interview with President Harry S. Truman and a special citation in 1955 for distinguished service. Krock, a native of Glasgow, began his newspaper career in 1907 as a reporter with the old Louisville, Herald. He was the author of four books, including an autobiography, "Memoirs: 50 Years on the Firing Line," a bestseller in 1968. Krock's first wife, Marguerite, died in 1938.

Survivors include his widow, the former Martha Granger Blair, a son, Thomas Krock of Dallas, and two stepsons, William G. Blair, a an executive and broadcast correspondent for the Times, and Robert H. Blair of Corpus Christi, Tex. Funeral services will be private. year.
