Reardon Tribune staff reporter Terry books are like of the without the pomposity. fun and silly, fantastic and thoughtful, sweetly satiric, commenting wittily but deeply on such real-world conundrums as racism, war, parenthood, puberty, real estate development and religious faith. His latest book, Wintersmith just published by HarperTempest, tells the story of 13- year-old witch-in-training Tiffany Aching who finds herself, because of a rash decision to jump into something without thinking, being courted by a suitor head- over-heels in love with her. Tiffany just feel that way about the guy especially because the guy, Wintersmith, is actually the personification of Winter, and he expects her to give up her humanity and become, well, Summer. Yuck! Besides which, his idea of romance is to make roses out of ice.

Yikes! I interviewed Pratchett in early 2000 when he came through Chicago to promote The Fifth Elephant (HarperCollins), the 24th book in his series about Discworld, a planet like a huge CD, flat and round, balanced on the backs of four gigantic elephants who, themselves, are balanced on the shell of an even more colossal turtle who is swimming calmly through space. a short guy with a bit of a lisp and a thick white beard, looking more than a little like the dwarfs who make up one of the major ethnic groups on Discworld. His books are huge in the United Kingdombut only moderately successful on this side of the Atlantic. I asked him why. the best answer is: To prepare for our conversation, I read the new book as well as the first three Discworld books: The Color of Magic The Light Fantastic and Equal Rites It was easy enough, and pleasurable enough.

writing is brisk and cheerful. having fun coming up with his stories, and a reader would have to have the sense of humor of a rock not to find delight in such characters as Cohen the Barbarian and Constable Reg Shoe, a zombie who sees dying as a career Others include the animate inanimate Luggage, a large trunk that can put out tiny feet and follow its owner across space and time; an evan- gelical cop whose name is Constable Visit-The- Infidel-With-Explanatory-Pamphlets; and Death who, in a recurring role in almost every Discworld book, speaks in capital letters and rarely brings good news. you THE SCYTHE, IT? PEOPLE ALWAYS NOTICE Interview done, story written. And, Well, then, I tracked down all of Discworld books and read them all the ones that had been published and, over the next six years, eight of the next nine installments in the series, including (I now realize that missed The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents so just gone on the Internet to order a copy.) Some of books, including the three featuring Tiffany Aching, are marketed to teens, but I tell much difference between those and the ones for adult readers. a little shorter, maybe, but just as loopy and provocative.

For example, Only You Can Save Mankind a non-Discworld novel, is a subtle meditation on war and the violent toys of Western society. It tells of Johnny Maxwell who discovers that, in the video game playing, there are aliens on those warships been blasting to kingdom come. And, he learns, when he vaporizes those ships, vaporizing the people on them people like him (albeit rather odd- looking and locked inside a video game). When, through some twist in the fabric of the Universe, the enemy warships surrender to Johnny, he has to decide whether to take responsibility for leading them to safety, off the edge of the game, so that other players throughout the world be able to find them and blast them to kingdom come. This is stuff.

And not. Pratchett writes for giggles. And a lot more. PRESS PLAY WHAT BEEN ENJOYING LATELY Photo by David Images Terry latest book, tells the story of 13-year-old witch-in-training. Comments and questions are welcome.
