Sign Guestbook at chicagotribune.com/obitu aries JONES, RICHARD JEFFERY Richard Jeffery Jones, physician, medical researcher, and educator with the University of Chicago and Northwestern Memorial Hospital for 42 years, died Tuesday, September the South Side of Chicago at the age of 87.

Dr. Jones was known for his early work on diet and heart disease and later for his role asDirector of Scientific Affairs at the American Medical Association. He was always proudest of his role as doctor and caregiver to his patients. During 17 years with the University of Chicago, Dr. Jones conducted research into thedietary factors involved in atherosclerosis and cholesterol; saw patients in the University Hospitals; taught classes in cardiology and internal medicine; and raised four children in Hyde Park.

He left the University of Chicago in 1976 to take the position of Director of Scientific Affairs with the American Medical Association. In this position until 1983, he played an important role in the AMA formulation of public policy. As one of his colleagues said of his career, he was an old school doctor who prided himself on his combination of medical wisdom and personal touch. He is survived by his four Jones, Ruth Backstrom, Jeff Jones, and Alexandrea Lyon; nine grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for the First Unitarian Church of Hyde Park 2 p.m.

After marrying and caring for her three daughters, she served in many volunteer organizations. Dottie was President of Family Service of South Lake County, she founded the Lake Bluff Volunteer Bureau, became President of the Lake Forest Hospital Women Auxiliary Board, serving for nine years, and was a vestrymem- ber of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit. After retiring to Beaufort, South Carolina, Dottie served on the United Way Board, volunteered at St.Helena elementary schools and began a New Opportunity School for the women at Berea College.
