2() DELAWARE COUNTY (PA.) DAILY TIMES Monday, December 9, RYAN, DiMEO, SCHEIVERT SELECTED St. James Places on All-Delco Team A three-man contingent from the powerful St. James i squad dominates the Delaware County Daily Times All Delco football team for 1963. The 11-man squad is a coach's dream, featuring a balanced backfield that can do everything and a light but scrappy line that contains seven boys equally Sdept at opening holes or closing them up. The AH Delco team was selected after extensive interviews with each of Delaware County's 24 high school coaches, a review of pertinent game films and personal coverage of games.

There are no repeaters on the team and only one junior, end Ken Quinn of Upper Darby High. St. James, considered by many the top team in the Catholic League, placed halfback Frank Ryan, end James DiMeo center Ken Scheivert. No other school was represented by rnore than one boy. The All-Delco team for 1963: ENDS James DiMeo, St James, and Ken Quinn, Upper "Darby.

TACKLES Walt Realer Colwyn, and Jeff Pow ers, Radnor. GUARDS Steve Rementer -Ridley Township, and Clem Riz riTzo, Interboro. CENTER Ken Scheivert James. BACKS Quarterback John Cartwright, Sharon HiH; half-backs Frank Ryan, St. James, -and Ed Mason, Springfield; and fullback Carl Gersbach, Swarthmore.

For the first time since 1958, the All Delco backfield con- sists of the standard four play- at their normal positions. In past years, five backs have been picked with as many as three of them quarterbacks. The current All Delco backfield is noted almost as much for its defensive ability as for Its prowess on offense. One of the few unanimous choices on the team is Ryan, St. James' greatest back since All- American Dick Christy and the county's most explosive runner since Ridley Township's Butch Delozier in 1958.

Ryan was the runner all St. James foes had to stop and nobody has stopped him yet. He scored 100 points to capture the Delco scoring title and gained 1323 yards rushing alone. He twice rushed for more chaii 200 yards in a single game. Cartwright, the quarterback, directed Sharon Hill to its finest season in almost 20 years.

A superb field general, Cartwright was a real triple threat with his running, passing and defensive ability. He stayed in the game until the Owls were well in front. Cartwright completed 103-of- 189 passes for 1349 yards, had only eight intercepted, gained 571 yards rushing while averaging 7.1 yards per carry, scored nine touchdowns, passed for 10 more and intercepted 10 passes himself. Halfback Mason was Springfield's money runner, breaking away on lengthy dashes to decide the Cougars' two biggest games of the year, against Ridley Township and Marple-Newtown. Mason led the team in interceptions and the backs in tackles.

He scored 11 touchdowns, despite being a marked man. other boy equally brilliant on defense and just as effective a blocker as he was a runner. His jarring tackles forced five fumbles and he blocked four punts. Youngest All Deico player at 16, Gersbach ran for 906 yards this season and paved the way for at least that many more with his blocking. The line is anchored by Scheivert, another unanimous selec- tion S.HU a lad who cp'uiu have made All-Delco at any one of several positions.

Perhaps the Jimmies' most valuable player, Scheivert performed at end, center, blocking back, fullback, linebacker and defensive halfback. There wasn't a harder tackier in the county nor a more expert diagnoser of plays. At guard, Rizzo was the heart of the defense and a vital member of the offense which carried Interboro io the Stjciiui Three Coach George Cor ner describes Rizzo as the type of player who never has to be told the same chins twice and the hardest 'hitting tackier on i hard hitting squad. His opposite number, Remen ter, was the strong man of a typically tough Ridley Town ship forward wall. Coach Phi Marion, a man who hesitates to praise without cause, rates The Daily Times All-Delco Team for 1963 JOHN CARTWRIGHT FRANK RYAN ED MASON CARL GERSBACH QB Sharon Hill HB St.

James HB Springfield FB Swarthmore KEN QUINN U. Darby JEFF POWERS CLEM RIZZO KEN SCHEIVERT STEVE REMENTER WALT REALER Radnor Interboro St. James Ridley Twp. Darby JIM DiMEO St. James ball player and a terrific college prospect." At 193 pounds, he's the heaviest All-Delco linemen.

Radnor High is noted for Its staunch interior linemen a the top boy this year is Powers, rated by coach Warren Lentz as the best all around-player on the team. Powers 1 crisp blocking made Radnor's funning game one of the county's finest. The other tackle, Realer, is a brother of Jim Realer, first team choice as end last season. Walt probably has the greatest initial charge of any county lineman. He was so good Coach Jack Houtz often let him free iance on defense.

At end, DiMeo was the darling of St. James fans as he darted past blockers a pounds heavier to nail opposing passers. Without equal as a quarterback killer, DiMeo also was a strong blocker and a pass receiver who made his greatest grabs in clutch situations. He ran patterns exceptionally well. Quinn, the lone junior, was the most consistent performer on an Upper Darby line rated among the county's finest.

A fine pass receiver, he was even more valuable on defense where he was practically immovable. The second team is only a step behind the first in all-around ability. The backfield of quarterback Jim Haynie (Interboro), halfbacks Ken Bosacco (Ridley Twp.) and Larry Larson (Media) and fullback Bill Grenfell Collingdale) is one of the strongest second units in years. The line is headed by end Wayne Wilkersdn of Chi, who earned the same position last year. It also includes end Don Wesley of Chester, tackles Paul Serina of St.

James and Inter- joro's Bill Morton, guards Bill jlenn of Collingdale and Gary Burruss of Marple Newtown and center John O'Neill of Swarthmore. The All Delco team will be uests of the Daily Times tonight at the Coaches Association Awards Dinner at the Alpine Each boy will receive a framed picture of the All-Delco team. Another View By Ed Gebhart Frank Ryan's Strong Finish Captures Delco Point Title IN THE SPACE immediately above this column, you will please note the All-Delco football team for 1963. Kindly regard it closely. It is a labor of love.

No other single project throughout the entire year demands so much time and attention and detail in the Daily Times sports department as the AII-Delco team. It is an honor which stays with a recipient all his life. We are acutely aware of this and take great pains to make sure that the best eleven boys are selected. How great an honor is making All-Delco? You might ask Clem Rizzo, Interboro High's fine guard. Or better still, ask Clem's mother.

CLEM'S COACH, George Corner, was told that Rizzo had made the'team last Friday morning. Corner was requested to have Rizzo at St. James High the next day at 9:30 a.m. for the All-Delco picture. "I'll have him there," Corner said.

Ten minutes later, Corner called back. "Rizzo left early this morn- Ing to go hunting in Williamsport," he said. "He won't be back until Tuesday." We thanked George for his help and held a hasty conference to see how we could remedy the situation. Moments later, Corner called back. "Mrs.

Rizzo just called me," he said. "She's driving to Williamsport to get Clem. He'll be there tomorrow morning." And he was. Mrs. Rizzo willingly drove five hours to Williamsport to get her son, had a bite to eat and drove right back.

She didn't home until 9:30 Friday night. Clem was right on time Saturday morning. WHAT ARE THE odds of making the first team All- Delco? Pretty steep. About 100 to one. We figure there are more than, 1,000 boys playing football on 24 county teams.

Only II make All-Delco. Over the years, there may be mistakes made. But if so, the mistakes are honest ones. Nobody makes the All-Delco because his dad is a coach or his uncle a politician or because he's Negro or Catholic or Jewish. Nor is anyone ever left off for the same reasons.

You make the All-Delco team on the playing field. IT'S AMAZING the strides a schoolboy player can make in one year. Of the eleven boys on this year's All-Delco, two made the second team a year ago-Frank Ryan and Ken Scheivert of St. James--and one made the third team, Ridley Township's Steve Rementer. The other eight didn't even rate honorable mention a year ago.

Today, they're first team All-Delco. WALT REALER Is the brother of Jim Realer, an All- Delco end last season for Darby-Colwyn. As near as we can figure, the Realers are the sixth set of brothers to make the All- Delco first team. The others include: Jack Nacrelli, two-time guard in '45 and '46, and brother Hank, a guard in '53, of St. James.

Buzzy Powell, two-time tackle in '48 and '49, and brother Norris, a guard in '56 of Eddystone. Dick Christy, two-time halfback in '52 and '53, and brother Jim, a fullback in '54, of St. James. Chuck Kane, an end in '54, and brother Chick, a guard in '55 and a center in '56, of Collingdale. And the Gallagher twins, quarterback Jim and end Frank, both on the St.

James team of 1960. RIZZO IS only the second Interboro player ever to make the AII-Delco first team. The only other Buc to be so honored was Jim McLaughlin, center on the 1958 team. St. James has placed at least one player every year except 1962, with a high of five players in '53.

WE ARE PROUD of the 1963 AII-Delco team, as we have been proud of each of its predecessors. And we will say the same things about the 'G3 AII-Delco that we have said of past teams: There may be some players in the county as gond as the 11 selected on our first team. There are none better. Frank Ryan wears the crown of Delco high school scoring champion today after putting in one of the most spectcaular finishes in history. St.

James' ace halfback ended the season with an even 100 points, 82 of which came in the last five games. Ryan managed only 18 points his first five contests. But he equalled that number in the Jims' final game of the season to win the, crown easily. Ryan thus became the 18th member of the count's 100-Point Club, and the first St. James player to win the title since Dick Christy captured scoring laurels in 1953.

Ryan and Christy are the only Jims to win the title since the race was devised in 1942. Frank totaled 15 touchdowns and 10 extra points to lead the Jims in scoring for the second straight year. He was the highest Jim point- maker last season with 59 points. His total this year, however, was nearly half of the Jims' entire point production (219) and was well passed St. total defensive yield Don Wesley James' (65.) Ryan tallied six points against Salesianum in the opener, was blanked for one game, got 12 against Roman, none for the next two games, 16 against Neumann, 22 against Bonner, 18 against St.

Thomas More, eight against St. Joseph's, and 18 against Chester. Frank easily outdistanced Col- 1963 Leaders Player, School TD EP TP Frank Ryan, Sf. Other three-TD games were fashioned by Cartwright, Gersbach, Gulledge, Lemon, Rich Unipan of Bonner, Dave Fried of Haverford, and Don Sidner of Ridley Township. Three of the top scorers (Cart- wright, Waller and Murdock were quarterbacks, while Gul! edge was the lone lineman cash the charmed circle.
