The appeal, launched on Easter Sunday, was adopted here at a meeting of the church's Florida Conference Council on Ministries, which said the objectives are to "make us aware of hunger, influence our life style, provide funds to help others and pray for a world in pain." Plight of hungry people was seen first-hand by resident Florida Bishop Joel D. McDavid on his recent visitation to India for the United Methodist Council of Bishops. LAKELAND- Members of Florida United Methodist churches have been urged to "fast and pray" for 57 days in i i of the world hunger problem.

Self-denial phases of the program call for church members to skip one meal day and contribute the money saved to the United Methodist Committee on Relief's emergency project to help feed the estimated 450 million persons who are threatened with starvation in numerous countries. The "feed the hungry" offering of each local church will be brought to Lakeland by delegates to the denomina v. SUNDAY WORSHIP 8:30, 9:45 and 11:00 A.M. 11 A.M. I Sr. High) 7:30 P.M. Worship in the Chapel By JIM DAVIS Religion Editor "Channel 4S Is Alive!" a psychedelic-colored sign proclaims during each station break of WFCB, South Florida's new religion-oriented television station. Backers and friends felt more than the usual buoyancy at the station's birth three weeks ago, since the gestation period was about nine years. Florida Christian Broadcasting the parent company, had to overcome several setbacks since 1966 before finally going on the air.

"At one time we were so far ahead of God's timing, we had our logs of programming made up and no station to put them on," WFCB Vice President Ray Ostendorf confessed. "I think one of the things He was doing was turning us into the kind of people that live the message we're broadcasting." From its transmitter site in Pembroke Park, the station beams a 1.9-million-watt signal that reaches viewers from' West Palm Beach to Homestead. Broadcast hours are presently tight weekdays only, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m. but the staffers say they will expand the time as they gain experience.

Channel 45, a UHF station, works as an "arm" of the church community instead of an intrusion, according to WFCB President Tom Monroe. Present programming, mainly from out-of-town sources, includes a broad range of faiths Baptist, Catholic, Seventh-Day Adventist, Lutheran, Presbyterian and Church of Christ. WFCB programmers hope to gain Jewish viewerj with a show of news and cultural notes from Israel. They plan to contact local Jewish groups on what are the most popular subjects. Monroe insisted the idea is not a plot to proselytize.

"There's a difference between loving and converting," he said. "We're missing our obligation if we see Jewish people as objects to evangelize instead of people," First priority for local programs may sound strange "Icky's Island," an old-fashioned kiddie show with puppet skits and sing-along organ music. The organ is an elaborate nightclub model, donated by a performer after she became a Christian. Kids will be able to sit right on the set, a mockup of a tropical island. Their seats will be on a boat-shaped bench marked S.

Savior." Program Director Don Bohl said he hopes the show will have the same appeal of "Kukla, Fran and Ollie," which he helped produce 15 years ago. "The puppets will be the foils for such problems as children face lying, cheating, stealing presented in a palatable form," Bohl said. "These are basic questions that have their answers in God's Word. "We made 'Icky's Island' a top priority because if we can't minister to kids, who can we minister to?" Bohl said. The crew plans to start the show in a few weeks and air it weekday afternoons.

Another idea is a "good news" report to balance other media's stories of murder, rape and corruption. "We plan to report local and national events that will build up and encourage people," Monroe said. "One idea is to show stories of heroism to stimulate and even; threaten them because they're not that kind of person." The title is actually a subtle play on words, since "Good News" is the literal meaning of the Greek word usually translated "Gospel." A variety show, using individuals and groups from area churches, is also on the boards. A talent search last December turned up so many prospects, "the only way to use them all is in a one-hour variety format," Bohl said. WFCB planners say they want to firm up their link with -local churches by taking in ideas from area leaders, Monroe said.

"There's 'no way we could evangelize the area," he said. "What we expect to be is a catalyst in the community, cutting across denominational lines." The antenna tower, visible from 1-95, is itself a model of community cooperation because it supports eight antennas. The tower's unusual "candelobra" design has three platforms at the top for the antennas of WFCB, WKID TV and WAXY radio. Six other FM antennas cling to the tower's sides. Stated purpose of Channel 45, in a written manifesto, is "video programming which imparts life by communicating moral, ethical and spiritual values to the public." Imparting life means helping people toward "attitudes and behavior more like God's plan for them," Monroe said.

Most of the staffers and backers are evangelical Chris-tains, but Monroe said they don't plan a direct apporach on the air. "Some of the people who give us programs may, but we won't," he said. "There's more than one way impart life." 250 N.E. 55 CT. PH.

He saw a parallel to the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus said nothing directly about salvation. "Instead, He talked about all the behavioral of people as they ought to be. That was imparting liie. I think there's something in the spirit of man that cnes out tj hear it." To keep the programming non-commercial, the planners are looking for 3,000 people to send in regular contributions of SS-S50 a month.

Future pir.ns call for a separate production building just north of the transmitter site, housing both the studio and the administrative offices. One. 40-by-60-foot structure can handle it all, Ostendorf said. mmmm St. Andrews United Methodist Church 1100 Andrtwi Avwtu WORSHI JO A 11:00 A.M.
