Her business career in human resourcesmanage- ment spanned 40 years. After graduating from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1945, she worked as Placement Director at Loyola University, Chicago, and then went on tothe American Medical Association and Baxter Trav- enol, (a Fortune 500 Company). She spent 14 years before retirement as Vice President Public Media, Inc. (later Films, thelargest international distributor of film and audio visual materials), managing eight offices nationwide.

She was a founder and President of Women in Personnel in Chicago, a two-term President International Association of Personnel Women, and a member of the American Society Training Directors. For many years she volunteered as a Braille transcriber. Loretta was a member of the National Society Daughters the American Revolution and was a former President of the Rancho Santa Fe Republican Women Club. Loretta was endeared by her family to whom she gave a great deal of love and attention. Her sister, Marykay Pflum Burch (Ray) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, formerly Winnetka and Wilmette; her brothers, Gene Jones (Therese) of Evanston, IL and Kevin Jones (Edith) of Buffalo Grove, IL; and 15 nieces and nephews survive her.

During her longillness, they all crisscrossed the country to spend time with her. Mass celebrating her life was held Saturday May 31 at 11:30 a.m. at Nativity Parish, Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Graveside services will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, IL at 11 a.m. Friday June 6.

Fowler on Easter Sunday in 1963 as he preached during the inaugural service of Third Baptist Church of Chicago, but that soon changed. was a good preacher who was able to grow an infant congregation into 3,500 said Rev. Alan Ragland, current senior pastor of the South Side church organized by Rev. Fowler.

Fowler, 83, pastor emeritus of Third Baptist, a civil rights advocate, founder of the Dorie Miller Awardand collector of historical African-American photographs, died of cancer Wednesday, May 28, in his Hyde Park home. Begun in a building at 938 W. 69th the church bought the abandoned Beverly Theatre at 95th Street and Ashland Avenue in 1979. Within a few years it acquired property across the street that became Heritage Plaza, a banquet facility and a gallery for Rev.

REV. ELMER L. FOWLER, 83 Civil rights activist founded Third Baptist Rev. Elmer L. Fowler On June 6, 1660, the Peace of Copenhagen ended war between Sweden and Denmark, opening the Baltic Sea to foreign ships.

In 1784 John Carroll, later the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States, was appointed supervisor of U.S. Catholic missions. In 1799 orator Patrick Henry died in Charlotte County, Va. In 1844 the Young Christian Association was founded in London. In 1892 elevated railroad began to carry passengers.

In 1925 Chrysler Corp. was founded by Walter Chrysler. In 1933 the first drive-in movie theater opened, in Camden, N.J. In 1934 the Securities and Exchange Commission was empowered to police the stock exchanges and investment markets in an act signed by President Franklin Roosevelt. In 1944 Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, on what became known as D-Day.

In 1966 James Meredith, the first black admitted to the University of Mississippi, was shot and wounded on a Mississippi highway on the second day of a voting rights march from Memphis to Jackson, Miss. In 1972 a coal mine explosion in Rhodesia killed 427 miners. In 1982 Israel invaded southern Lebanon to destroy PLO bases. In 1984 the Indian army attacked Sikh extremists at the Golden Temple, the holiest Sikh shrine, in Amritsar, Punjab. More than 600 were reported killed.

In 1991 jazz saxophonist Stan Getz died in Malibu, at 64. In 1976, J. Paul Getty, believed to be the richest man, died at 83 near London. ALMANAC.
