McKay is the most successful coach in team history, with a 44-88-1 regular-season record. Selmon, the team's first-ever draft choice, is the career sack leader with 78 Vi and played in six consecutive Pro Bowls. Bell, who died from a rare muscle disease, is the team's second-leading career rusher with 3,057 yards. Bucs starting defensive end Keith McCarrts and reserve offensive guard John Bruhin missed practice Wednesday because of the flu, coach Richard Williamson said.

The team's medical staff is convinced wide receiver Bruce Hill, on injured-reserve after arthroscopic knee surgery, will miss the rest of the season. Although the Bucs are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention Vinny Testaverde will continue to start in front of inexperienced Jeff Carlson. "I want to try and win the last three this year," Williamson said. However, he conceded first-round pick Charles McRae will probably receive playing time at right tackle, though Rob Taylor remains the starter. The last time a Dolphin was picked as either offensive or defensive player of the week was Marino against Kansas City in the 1990 playoffs. Marino is the fifth Bucs' opponent to be named as a player of the week this season.

But this year there is an unusually high number of coaches likely to be handing in their headsets at the conclusion of the season, making it possible to play that game now.

There is the potential for as many as nine teams to make coaching changes in the off-season, prompting former Eagles coach Buddy Ryan to invoke his powers of reason and rhetoric to promise, "I'm back." Former 49ers coach Bill Walsh a apparently is also considering returning to football again, this time strictly as a general manager, maybe in a package with Raiders quarterbacks roach Mike White or Stanford's Dennis Green. Former Giants coach Bill Parcells will almost cer-v tainly return to the sideline, prob-i ably with the Tampa Bay Bucs, unless Walsh concedes to coaching for a few seasons before moving to the front office. The Vikings' Jerry Burns finally acknowledged this week his plans to resign. The Bucs' Richard Wil- liamson, the Packers' Lindy In- fante, the Chargers' Dan Henning, the Rams' John Robinson and the Colts' Rick Venturi will be replaced. a In addition, four-time Super Bowl winner Chuck Noll's problems with the Steelers are very serious, and Chuck Knox likely will quit before the Seahawks have the opportunity 2 0 0 12 G.

"I can't see them being able to, you know, hire another assistant coach," Peters said, referring to the fact Williamson was promoted from receivers coach to head coach last year.

"I think that's why I'm all for Richard being able to put together a string of three wins and maybe save his job, because that ensures we'd all be here." Bucs owner Hugh Culverhouse is expected to consider a coaching change at the conclusion of the season because of Williamson's 3-13 overall record and diminishing attendance figures that project a $1 million shortfall in budgeted ticket revenues. Despite changing schemes and making personnel alterations, Peters has improved the defense from 24th to 13th in the NFL rankings in his first season with the team. Peters, 55, would almost certainly be provided at least a cursory interview for the position. But he believes his viability is limited because the economic factors will put pressure on the team to attempt to hire a more marketable and experienced coach, with Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells and Dan Reeves the potential focal points. "When the season's over, I've got to sit down and do some serious thinking," Peters said.

"I don't know what's going to happen here. I don't know what's going to happen with five other teams. I like what I'm doing here. I like Tampa Bay. I'd like to build this defense and Stay here, but who knows what's going to happen.

"It takes some time to build a team. I'm the third defensive coordinator. Are they going to go through a fourth? I mean, I'm saying, hey, if you want to build a defense, you better start building a defense, and you can't keep playing musical chairs fire this guy or get rid of this guy. To me, hey, you want a football team? Build one. "A lot of people say, That guy can't There's a lot of good coaches, and you don't even get out of the starting blocks.

That's the problem with our business: It's either win or get out. I understand that But I'm also saying that creates those disasters, too." The perception around the league was that Peters came to Tampa Bay because he figured Williamson might be a short-term coach and that he could- emerge as a replacement. Now he's probably nothing more than the perfect fallback candidate, the one the team turns to should the big-name hunting fail. Yet Peters is concerned about whether he would be permitted to return for the final year of his contract in 1992 if the Bucs replace Williamson. MINNESOTA VIKINGS THE TEAM confirmed Wednesday that Jerry Burns, who had a 50-42 record in his five-plus season, will retire as coach after the 1991 season.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS GUARD TERRY Long for the first time admitted using steroids to accelerate his recovery from knee surgery. Long attempted suicide in July after failing the test. He is in the final week of a four-week suspension. NEW YORK GIANTS LINEBACKER LAWRENCE Taylor worked out for the first time since spraining his left knee against Tampa Bay on Nov. 24 and indicated he probably would play Sunday.

i mmm i MIAMI DOLPHINS Announced QB Dan Marino was named AFC's offensive player of the week. I 1 I I I I i 1 1 i i 1 rfllr. 4- 35j? i to consider firing him. The situation with the Bengals' Sam Wyche is he will have a postseason meeting with GM Mike Brown and tell him he'll remain only if the team makes a major financial commitment to winning, such as increasing his power, hiring1 more scouts and building a new facility. If it happens, this year will mark the largest coaching turnover in the league since seven teams hired coaches in 1983.

Furthermore, Don Shula, Joe Gibbs, Mike Ditka, Dan Reeves, Jim Mora, Marv Levy and Wayne Fontes will be the only coaches left with more than three years' tenure with their current teams. Here, then, is one list of openings and possible top candidates: Bucs Parcells; Long shots: Walsh, Reeves; Chargers UM coach Dennis Erickson. Vikings Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz or Jets defensive coordinator Pete Carroll. Rams Ryan. Seahawks Raiders' White.

Steelers Bears defensive coordinator Vince Tobin. Colts Knox. Bengals Georgia Tech's Bobby Ross. Packers Robinson. Those coaches and league administrators concerned with keeping starting quarterbacks upright and out of the chiropractor's office should take note of the Redskins.

In opposition to the stratagems of most teams, which use spread formations to increase the number of receivers running pass routes, Gibbs almost always keeps seven players in to pass protect and makes certain of having extra backside support for Mark Rypien. This season, Rypien has been sacked only four times the league average is 28.5 and is one of three NFC quarterbacks not to miss a start. "Their quarterback does the job for them, and the way they protect him, he doesn't even have to shower after the game," the Rams' Robinson said after losing to the Redskins last week. i Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson knows his quarterbacks. And, more importantly, how to defense them.

He takes a 4-0 record against former Miami, Hurricanes quarterbacks into this week's meeting with the Saints and Steve Walsh. For the record, Johnson is 2-0 opposite the Bucs' Vmny Testaverde and won his only meetings with Walsh and the Browns Bernie Kosar. "I think we've got a real good feel for those guys and how to defense them because of our familiarity with them," Dallas defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt said. "Hopefully, the streak continues because we'd love to play Jim Kelly this year." The only way Johnson could coach against Kelly, another former Hurricane, is for the Cowboys and Bills to reach the Super Bowl. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones considers that a distinct possibility.

"Whet would we have to do? Go to Washington and beat the Redskins? I guess I agree that's impossible," he said smugly, knowing his team ac-i complished just that two before. -t- LIFETIME GUARANTEE Starters and Alternators I 172 Month AA9B l7nn RAB7 II seat I SAVE wexch WEXCH rricea I ucvj mWucym I1 1 i I iii II a v.T'jaa:iwa.f.i.ra:i I I.
