THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS, SATUEDAY JUNE 11, 1887. CHICAGO WEEKLY LETTER. INCIDENTAL REVIEWS BY REPORTERS. The Theater Business Waning--Story of a Speculator-- Improprieties of Club Men Advance in Real Estate. CHICAGO, 111,, June The business at none of tho theaters hero is anything like what it used to bo aud the miuia- ftors nre disgusted.

Espouses oontinno to bo on tfco sctUo tnai. they wfrro when there but low houses hero and when thla was the best theatrical city in tlio country. The patronage ol all sorts is now divided between nineteen different houses, wfcere in JSSO it was divided only between six or seven. The first-class theaters have the. further disadvantage of being compelled to keep down town and compete in routs with the great retail and wholesale stores.

This one thing accounts for their enormous expenses. It cosU tho Columbia per Week the year around. The rent at tho Grand Opera Is per annum and at the Chicago opera-house th-s same llguro. Thus, it is really email wonder that Hamlln of the Grand to sell out bis lease, or that Billy Clapp should unloud property, or that o'ven old Uicfe Hooley is discouraged and talss of retiring. TDK 1UC CHICAGO SPKCUI.ATOU.

Everybody has heard of N. tbo big Chicago speculator. Illustration of his homely, but kindly character, tho story is told: Somo months ago when St. yrr.il was too specaiatlveinucy ol all western Eiea, llea.m was a mouiber ot the famous junketing party over the road with Armour wUsn Use stock was in the GO'e. He aiso wont iuto the stook with Mat Jones and others, aad kept doubling tho stock was i.ntaeivicin- ity of par, and when everybody expected It would touch 1W, Koam had a pood mnuy thonenna ehflrop.

His proBts had reached over after talking the matter over one afternoon, he andthe other "bnlla" in tho stock here, decided to soil out. Tho next morningtho whole load carried by tho crowd was dumped--except that carried by lleam, For some reason or other that the brokers oonld not guess, that tall speculator failed to g(t down town until nearly noon. By that time the stock xnn ket bad weakened off considerably, and Kcnm decided to hoM his St. Paul for a carder spot. It wasn't a lucky decision.

The market bad made a turn for a long pull, and it did not go but one way--down, when his St. Paul was finally closed out tho entire proiH had disappeared. As the bvcker who made the trade ucconat ho remarked that there jhad a bandsoroe profit in tho dun! at one time which might easily have boon secured. Koam answered: "When I went home that night after the talk umOug tho different holders, 1 intended to soil out at the opening the next morning, but," ho added ingenuously, and as It there was nothing at all remarkable about It, "two of our servant girls at homo got Into a rel and one.ol! thorn was gotng to loavo. 1 lad to stay homo to straighten the thing out." Those servant girls miy bo with Mr.

Heam yet and probably are, but wberovor they are he ousSt to own theoi. They cost him over itiO.OuO. IMFKOmrXTY OF CLUI11IEN'. In London, tho city of clubs, the blinds in all the houses on the Sabbathare drawn nu- tU after church-going peoplo returned homo from their devotions. Here in Chicago, however, thero is as muoh flaunting "by tho clubmen on Sunday as on any other day.

At the Union, tho Chicago, tho C-unmet and several others for instance.about noon when families are passing homo from church the big club-house windows are full of young fellows with more curiosity than good taste, in their anxiety to exhibit themselves they ataro at the Handsome girls, the comely gicla and the old ladies. western clubmen utterly ignore propriety. ADVANCE IK REAL ESTATE. As an example of tho advance in Chicago estate it may be mentioned that B. J.

Bhnrtleff this week sold a piece of property for SlDo.OCO that he bought of the city at the sale of canal land in 1S39 for WOO. This is about as good per cent on one's money as any one gets--abont 000 per cent per year. The taxes have of course amounted to something on the property in twenty years, but not enough to detract from the magnificence or the profit. In the OOs ShnrtleC used to tnpt over the property when it was not tiongnt to be worth ij-10 an acre. Jlow it sells at SSGOO per acre.

He states that Bholton owed him some money, find that he sold the articles, as ho supposed, with the full knowledge of the owner. He has been a book agent, school toucher and hotelkooper, and has been considered a very straightforward young man until the occurrence of to-day. Ho has relatives in this and Fannln county also, who will probably make his bond, which was put at WOO, to await preliminary trial Tuesday.
