He shoulders no pressure about going home to Miami to play the second-ranked Hurricanes, and he harbors no resentment over last year's video flap. "Last year was last year," he said.

"I don't have any hard, harsh feelings toward their players. The past couple of years, this game has been for the national championship. Somebody had to lose. You have to take all this in the fun of football." "All this" includes a video of Jones made by Luther Campbell, lead singer of the rap group 2 Live Crew. In the video, Jones, who graduated from Miami's Northwestern High School, was seen talking about how FSU would beat Miami.

Campbell, a Miami fan, then showed the video to the Hurricanes, who said after their 17-16 victory that Jones' taped remarks were inspirational. I don't have any animosity," Jones said. is is A slight bruise to the pad on Charlie Ward's thumb is not causing him any problems throwing, FSU coach Bobby Bowden said, and Ward said it is no big deal. "Charlie looks fine," Bowden said. Say what you want about the Orange Bowl's mystique, but 12 of FSU's 14 victories over the Hurricanes have come in Miami.

FSU last beat Miami in the Orange Bowl, however, in 1984. ALAN SCHMADTKE, of the Sentinel staff Thursday night game a chance to turn heads For a few hours Thursday night, the 13th-ranked Gators will have college footbalrs undivided attention. They want to make the most of it. Florida plays at No, 24 Mississippi State in the only game on the air Thursday, thanks to ESPN, which last season began airing the college version of Monday Night Football. "There's a little added incentive to show you can play well," coach Steve Spurrier said.

"Hopefully we can show the Gators are still a pretty good team. We didn't show it the last time out a 31-14 loss to Tennessee." It will be UF's first Thursday game. IS VS IS The wait is over for quarterback Shane Matthews, who finally will play a college game in his home state Thursday. He graduated from Pasca-goula High School, about 3 hours from the MSU campus in Starkville. "I'm really looking forward to going back home," he said.

"A lot of people have seen me on TV but not actually seen me in a game." UF last played in Mississippi in 1988 when Matthews was a true freshman and a member of the scout team and beat Ole Miss, 27-15. The torrential downpour the Gators played in Sept. 19 during their loss at Tennessee is having lingering effects on many UF players who still are fighting off a virus that has spread through the team. I've been sick all week," guard Jim Watson said. "Everyone's getting a little sick." MIKE DAME, of the Sentinel staff UF OPP.

Although the Hurricanes will miss his presence on the playing field, Medearis expects to continue his role as one of Miami's emotional leaders by joining his teammates on the sideline. Medearis, considered one of the best defensive linemen in the country, underwent extensive surgery on his left leg in Doctor's Hospital in Coral Gables. "He'd love to be there," Miami trainer Andy Clary said. "That's something we'll talk about as the week goes on." Medearis' knee was dislocated backward, damaging cartilage, all of his ligaments and an artery benind the knee.

Despite the severity of the injury, the prognosis is good. "There was a lot of damage," Clary said. "But because, as Rusty's mother said, he's a blessed kid, all the damage turned out to be reparable. The doctors already want him to start moving the foot and doing straight leg lifts. INTERCEPTIONS TD FG PAT TP familiar title leading tackier.

Not just leading tackier at Miami of Ohio, but leading tackier in the country. The NCAA doesn't recognize tackle statistics, but that doesn't stop Miami from counting them or coaches from talking about them. McMillan, a 6-foot-l, 220-pound linebacker from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, gives them enough reasons. Last year he made 204 tackles, averaging 18.5, both of which the school says led the country. Through four games this year, he has raised his average to 19.7 with 79 tackles.

Although he is on the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando's checklist for the Butkus Award, McMillan still plays in virtual anonymity. "I've never seen a more productive player, and I was at North Carolina when Lawrence Taylor was there," Miami defensive coordinator Tim Carras said. This week during film grading, Carras watched McMillan, the middle linebacker in Miami's 4-3 scheme, get knocked down by a double-team block but still reach up with one arm and bring down a running back. Then there's the man he chased down 50 yards from the line of scrimmage. This from a player who first didn't think he could play at an NCAA Division I-A school.

is is is The bowl coalition this week is expected to approve exclusive use of The Associated Press Top 25 poll to help shape its selection process, a move that has sparked what else? controversy. The coalition originally decided to use only the AP rankings, but lobbying by officials at USA Today, CNN and the American Football Coaches Association, who produce the coaches' poll, appeared to give their rankings equal importance. That was thrown out in an earlier coalition meeting, and it's expected to be voted out this week in Chicago. The move has raised the ire of, among others, AFCA head Charlie McClendon, who would like his coaches to have a say in matters. Regardless, what the polls say doesn't cast anything in stone.

In the end, coalition members can pair what they perceive as the best matchups for the Orange, Sugar, Cotton and Fiesta bowls. is More coalition: The group has hired a New York public relations firm, Cohn and Wolf, headed by former ABC executive Donn Bernstein, to handle all media requests regarding the bowls Already the bumper stickers are out in Columbia, S.C., poking fun at Arkansas' latest hire former Clemson coach Danny Ford: "You may have to 'drive a Ford to get out of the woods." Boston College (4-0) is working on a fourth consecutive shutout for the first time since 1942. For the detail-minded, that's 187 consecutive minutes. For the feeble-minded, it's worth a bushel of oranges, which fans lobbed onto BC's field Saturday after a 14-0 victory over Michigan State. Call San Diego State running back Marshall Faulk smart as well as nimble.

Me probably will become the first sophomore to be insured through the NCAA's disability program. Faulk, last year's leading rusher as a freshman, has applied for a $1.8 million policy. Oh, by the way: The Citadel Claimed another NCAA I-A opponent Army. That makes six I-As in the last seven tries for the Bulldogs. Wofford's Shawn Graves owns all-division records for rushing yards and touchdowns scored by a quarterback.

He claimed the first record last year, the second (67) last week. Samford coach Terry Bowden pooh-poohed speculation he someday would succeed his father, Bobby, at Florida Stale. "If it were a family business, I would expect to inherit it," he said. "But my dad can't put the job in his will. Besides, which son would he give it to9" Other sons Tommy (Southern Miss) and Jeff (Kentucky) also are coaches.

17. The Bears will bring 34 players to the United States from Russia. The team has been playing organized football since 1989 in a 20-team league. UCF coach Gene McDowell said he never faced the possibility of going three weeks during a season without playing a game. IS IS IS Although he gained a season-low 30 yards against Western Illinois last week, freshman tailback Gerod Davis is averaging 100 yards rushing per game.

Davis, from Edgewater High School, has 408 yards in his first four college games, an average of 102 yards. He has scored three touchdowns. Cornerback Travis Johnson led the Knights last week with 12 tackles against Western Illinois. On the same day UCF redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Jordan was having a tough go (0-for-5 passing) against Western Illinois, his brother, Terry Jordan, was 23-of-25 leading North Carolina State to victory over North Carolina. The defensive backfield, which includes senior All-American William Carroll and sophomore cor-nerbacks Ken Riley II and Kelno Taylor, have hardly broken a sweat this season. But they don't have any interceptions, either.

"Last year, they were throwing the ball at us," Riley said. "This year, with the pressure our line is putting on their quarterbacks, they're not even getting the chance," One player the lack of interceptions may hurt is Carroll, who with 21 interceptions is one shy of the school record and eight shy of the Division l-AA record. "Frankly, this season it seems as if people have been avoiding me," Carroll said. Actually, it kind of boosts my ego to know they're afraid of me." is is is Even though junior quarterback Tracy Weldon threw four passes that were intercepted in last week's 20-12 victory over Tennessee State, Riley said he will start Weldon against Howard on Saturday at Bragg Stadium. "I think that we need to go with the quarterback we think can gat the job done and try to groom a starter," Riley said, "Nobody's learning anything when they struggle or make a mistake then we hook them and put the other guy Keith Brown in." CHPIS TALBOTT, Sentinel corre.pondent Wildcats still searching for a big-play receiver The Wildcats are off this week, giving coach Sylvester Collins time to look for a big play receiver to bolster the passing attack.

Collins was particularly dismayed about the lack of a major threat after Saturday's 40-13 loss to Samford. Of the 23 completions, only one went for more than 22 yards, and the average reception was 10.6 yards. For the season, the Wildcats (0-4) have had only one completion longer than 36 yards, and the top four receivers are averaging fewer than 10 yards per catch. The only long threat has been John Jones, who is averaging 18.4 yards per catch and has a team-best 46-yard reception. "It's good that we spread it pass distribution out, but we don't have that go-to guy," Collins said.

"We need somebody who can makes things happen." That player could be wide receiver Morris Noble, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound sophomore from Brunswick, Ga. Noble has four receptions for 49 yards, Including a 16 yard touchdown against Samford. "Noble has potential," Collins said. "We need somebody to step forward." IS IS Two of punter Tony Kerrln's kicks were partially blocked in Saturday's 42-13 loss to Sam-fora, but he also booted a career-best 64 yarder near the close of the first half. The school record is 79 yards, set by Clewls Wright in 1968.
