174 127 Sophomore quarterback Darin Hinshaw completed 11 of 23 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns, and he caught two passes one for a 17-yard touchdown from wide receiver Mike Dickinson. Western Illinois got a big day from quarterback Donny Simmons, who threw 51 times and completed 27 for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Steve Decker caught 10 for 1 18 yards and two touchdowns. "They got hurt as much as we did with the rain," UCTs Dickinson said. "That second half was brutal for the type of teams we are." The Knights tried razzle-dazzle on their first play from scrimmage against the Leathernecks and pulled off a 14-yard gain despite bumbling a pitch back to Dickinson.

Dickinson not only scooped up the ball, but he also spotted quarterback Hinshaw and calmly threw a quick pass for a first down. "I sensed I had time to pick the ball up, that we had fooled them enough," Dickinson said. "My first option was to throw to Bret Cooper. When I couldn't find him, I saw Darin wide open." The same play worked later on Hinshaw's touchdown catch. Hinshaw threw for 35 yards to David Rhodes and for 30 to Cooper for a touchdown 45 seconds into the game.

The Leathernecks came close to tying the score late in the quarter, but Hamilton picked off a pass at UCFs 3 and ran for a touchdown, the longest interception for a score in school history. That gave the Knights a 14-0 lead. "I read the thing right," Hamilton said. "I got UCF coach Gene McDowell kept to his game plan and used redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Jordan in the second quarter, and after the Knights failed to move the ball on two possessions and the Leathernecks scored 10 points McDowell went back to Hinshaw. Western Illinois lost three points when caught holding on a field goal but came right back to score on a 22-yard pass from Simmons to Bush with 10:57 left in the first half.

Matt Seman made a 32-yard field goal at 7:53 left in the half to reduce UCFs lead to 14-10. With Hinshaw back, the Knights marched 57 yards on four plays, three of them pass completions. Davis scored from the 2 after Hinshaw threw 23 yards to Rhodes. John Bryant intercepted a pass to set up UCFs next score, Dickinson's pass to Hinshaw and a 28-10 lead. Hinshaw threw a 15-yard pass to Mark Whitte-more as UCF ran its lead to 35-10 with 1:44 left in the half.

The Leathernecks kept the ball for almost seven minutes on their first drive of the second half, scoring on the 16th play. Simmons threw an 8-yard pass to Decker for the score, ending the 77-yard drive. The only other second-half scoring came with 31 seconds to play when Simmons and Decker combined on a 4-yard touchdown pass set up by a fumble recovery by defensive end Brent Harbold at UCFs 11. UCF was more or less in a "prevent" offense in the second half trying to prevent mistakes, and it worked. Ml 3-53 1-3 35 3-106 1-13 MACOMB, Dl.

University of Central Florida senior linebacker Rick Hamilton called Saturday's 35-22 victory over Western Illinois "a huge uplifting," a day for the Knights to show their true colors. Western Illinois coach Randy Ball, in a fit of rage, scolded his players for their effort. "That team wasn't that good," Ball ranted in the locker room. "Look at yourselves in the mirror and ask what happened." Led by Hamilton, who set a school record with a 97-yard touchdown run with an interception, the Knights (3-1) forged back into NCAA I-AA playoff contention with a convincing victory far from home. "It was a game we needed badly, and we went out and won it," Hamilton said.

"This should open a lot of eyes It's a morale booster for us. We let one get away last week. That one is gone, but we're back." A week after losing, 20-16, to Troy (Ala) State in Orlando, the Knights came ready to play. They scored all their points in the first half, before a hard, steady rain made the ball too slippery for a passing game. Of the Knights' 27 plays from scrimmage in the first half, 21 were passes.

Freshman running back Gerod Davis had only four first-half carries, 11 for the game. "Why run when we were passing the way we did?" asked Davis, who gained 30 yards his first college game with fewer than 100. 4-20 7-55 5-3 3-2 1920 4040 Kickoff returns Player Decker No 3 Yds 53 Avg 17.5 Ekiyor 2-2-1, Jefferson 2-1-V4, Brit-ton 1-O0. Davis, who had three consecutive 100-yard rushing games, gained 28 yards on four carries in the first half and finished with 30 yards on 11 carries. "Darin Hinshaw threw the ball really well today," Davis said. "When he was throwing like that, we didn't need the run.

I'm just tickled everyone has their heads back up after last week a 20-16 loss to Troy State. This was a must-win situation." University of Central Florida football coach Gene McDowell had more on his mind Saturday than playing Western Illinois. Before the game, McDowell, also the school's athletic director, expressed his displeasure that The Orlando Sentinel reported that UCF lost money because of a poor turnout last week in its game at the Florida Citrus Bowl against Troy State. McDowell said that UCF has sold 5,000 season tickets, the most in its history and is assured of at least breaking even for each of its home games. "We get very little publicity," McDowell said, "and half of it is wrong." Linebacker Rick Hamilton's 97-yard touchdown run with an interception is the longest in UCFs history, beating by 2 yards Ray Irvin's interception run against Bethune-Cookman in 1990. It was Hamilton's sixth career interception, his first for a touchdown.

But the Tankless attack found a pair of catalysts in running back Da-mian Hines, Edwards' replacement, and quarterback Ben Wiggins. Hines rushed for 99 of his season-high 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns; Wiggins contributed a 24-yard touchdown pass and a 1-yard scoring run. The two also connected on a 23-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to pad the lead to 35-6.

Hines, who had 97 yards in two games, became the fourth consecutive back to record a 100-yard game against B-CC. "They didn't do anything we didn't expect," B-CC coach Sylvester Collins said. cause I've had no outside influences," said Terry, who has been a head coach all but one season since leaving FSU as an assistant nine years ago. "I'll use their strategies and run their offenses after they have run it through the kinks. But understand, I'm not him and I'll never be him.

I'm just trying to build a better mousetrap." B-CC (0-4), off to its worst start since 1958, didn't even get a whiff of the bait before being caught in Bowden's trap. Samford scored on its first three possessions and waltzed to a 28-6 halftime lead before downshifting the attack in the second half. It should have been a 5-yard penalty. I was thinking if we have a chance in the game, then we have one right now." Florida coach Ken Riley wasn't pleased with his team's five turnovers and 61 yards in penalties. "The mental mistakes hurt us," Riley said. "Last week it was the' same thing. If we can get it together, this team can make things happen." Backup quarterback Tracy Weldon got things going for the Rattlers, after replacing Keith Brown.

Weldon, a junior from Plant City, threw for 161 yards on 9-of-22 passing. He had two touchdowns but four interceptions, which tied a school record held by four others. FAMU scored first on Weldon's 36-yard touchdown pass to Terry Mickens with 3:52 left in the second quarter. Florida senior tailback Gerald Duffy had 140 yards on 30 carries and one touchdown. Freshman running back Frankie Wilkens finished with 76 yards on eight carries.

"We didn't play well against the run," TSU coach Joe Gilliam said, "We will have to go to the films to pull some positive out of this game. All the teams we have played have been big, strong and rugged. Florida wasn't any different." The big play of the game came with Tennessee State trailing, 20-12, with 1:38 left. With Florida punter Baity Brown back on a punt attempt at the Rattlers' 47-yard line, a mishandled snap forced Brown to throw a pass, which was intercepted by Brent Alexander. But the play was nullified after Tennessee State was called for a face-mask penalty.

"The way I saw it we should have been penalized from the spot, which was the 35, instead of the line of scrimmage," Gilliam said. "The officials didn't see it that way, and they ATLANTA A punishing ground attack and a controversial face-mask penalty propelled Florida to a 20-12 victory over Tennessee State on Saturday in front of 43,211 fans in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. FAMU (3-1), coming off a 38-0 loss to top-ranked Miami, was expected to duplicate last year's 43-7 rout of Tennessee State. "We knew they were going to be tough," FAMU quarterback Keith Brown said. "They played a little over their heads.
