ppd. rain Dunedm a Sarasota, nrgnt HI Consistency key for SunRays' Lewis WILULAMSPORT, Pa. Ian To-lentino belted a two-run home run in the first inning and pitched three innings of strong relief Saturday to lead the Philippines to a 154 victory against Long Beach, in the championship game of the Little League World Series. The Philippines sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the first inning. "In essence, they just jumped on us real fast.

It was difficult to make a recovery," Long Beach manager Larry Lewis said. "I knew in the first inning we were going to win the tournament," Philippines manager Rudy Lugay said. "We had not made a run in the first inning in previous games, so when we got seven runs, I knew we were going to make it." The title marked the 21st time in 26 years that Little League's Far East champion has won the World Series title. Taiwan, which the Philippine team defeated in the Asian tournament, won 15 of the 21. "This is something for the Philippines," said Lugay, whose team was the first from the country to make a World Series.

"I'm sure everybody in the Philippines is celebrating." It was 8-0 in the third when Ryan Stuart belted a grand slam for Long Beach to cut the deficit in half. "When the score was 84, 1 think the mood in the dugout was a bit optimistic," Lewis said. "Then they exploded for five runs and that pretty much took the wind out of our sails." Tolentino, who switched from left field to pitcher in the third, held Long Beach scoreless the rest of the way. In the fourth, the Philippines batted around again and scored five runs to take a 134 lead. They added their final two runs in the sixth.

Tolentino (1-0) gained the victory because starter Ignacio Ramacho didn't pitch the required four innings. Ryan Beaver (1-1), whose homer Thursday put Long Beach into the championship game, left the game after four innings. Marlins promote 1 st baseman First baseman Dan Robinson did so well for the Gulf Coast Marlins that he has been promoted to the Erie Sailors in the Class A New York-Penn League for the remainder of the season. Robinson hit .335 and had eight triples for the expansion Marlins, who finished 33-27, the fourth-best record in the league. Sal Ilende has taken over as the Sailors' manager, allowing Freddy Gonzalez and batting coach Jose Castro to return to the Miami area to tend to their homes, which were damaged from Hurricane Andrew.

The Sailors are 36-33. MICEU TOUGH MEMPHIS CHICKS reliever Danny Miceli, from Dr. Phillips High School, has not allowed an earned run since July 17, covering 17 appearances and 18'3 innings. Miceli, 22, is in his third year of pro ball. He was promoted from Class A Appleton June 19.

"He's got the best arm on the team," Chicks pitching coach Mike Alvarez said. Miceli is scheduled to play in the Arizona Fall League after the season ends Orlando SunRays trainer Rick McWane was named Southern League Trainer of the Year. RUSS WHITE After 5 years in the minor leagues, utility player Mica Lewis is on track for a major-league role. By Ric Russo OF THE SENTINEL STAFF Orlando SunRays utility player Mica Lewis has been searching the past five years for consistency, the key ingredient he believes will help him become a major leaguer. This season, the Los Angeles native may have found it.

"Since day one, Mica has been the most consistent player on this ballclub," SunRays manager Phil Roof said. "In all phases of the game basemnning, hitting, defense and so on his level of play has remained at an even keel. "If he can add a little smoothness to his defense, I think he could become a good role player in the majors." Lewis' career in the minors has had its share of ups and downs since he was selected in the second round of the 1988 amateur draft. The Astros drafted Lewis as a second basemanshortstop after his junior year at Cal State Los Angeles, where he led the Golden Eagles in hitting with a .351 average. In June 1990, the Astros dealt Lewis to Minnesota to complete a trade involving Steve Lombar-dozzi.

Houston acquired Lombardozzi, a second baseman, from the Twins during spring training of '89 for a player-to-be-named-later. Right-handed pitcher Gordon Farmer was that player, but the Twins shipped Farmer back to Houston because of a lame arm. It took Minnesota longer to get compensation for Lombardozzi than the ex-Twin lasted with the Astros. They released him early in the '90 season. The year before, Lewis was an All-Star second baseman with Auburn of the Class A New York-Penn league.

In 67 games, he hit .261 with 24 sto len bases, 2 home runs, 2 triples, 9 doubles and 16 runs batted in. Despite the decent numbers and the all-star status, Lewis was not surprised by the trade. "I saw it coming. With them Houston, I never felt like my talents were fully appreciated," said Lewis, 25. "But I'm very happy to be with Minnesota.

They are giving me an opportunity to play every day, and that's all I can ask." With Orlando, Lewis has played all three outfield positions, and second base. Through Friday's game, he was hitting .277 with 13 doubles, 3 triples, 5 homers and 33 RBIs. He also has stolen a team-high 32 bases, third-best in the Southern League. Coming to the Twins also gave Lewis a chance to play with a former college teammate, outfielder Rex De La Nuez. The two have been climbing the minor-league ladder since Lewis joined the organization at Kenosha in 1990.

De La Nuez says Lewis has refined his talent since their days at Cal State Los Angeles and has become a much better player. "As far as raw ability goes, I think Mica is one of the best players in the league," he said. "He has all the tools to become a good major-league player. He just needs to learn a few more things. But when he does, watch out." SunRays hitting coach Mark Funderburk agrees and wishes the team had a few more like Lewis.

"He is the type of player every manager would like to have nine or 10 more of," Funderburk said. "Mica gives 110 percent all the time no matter what the score is." Lewis had his best year in 1991 at Class A Vi-salia of the California League. He hit .283 with 11 homers, 38 stolen bases and 57 RBIs in 115 games. TOM SPITZSENTINEL Mica Lewis has played all 3 outfield positions, and second base for the Orlando SunRays.
