Phone, Night or Day, Main 97. Old ol! tank cars of the Southern Pacific are being repaired and are making their appearance with the big letters (Associated) instead of as formerly. And the car famine (for the small producer) is likely to become Intensified from now on. New cars were supposed to be coming to relieve the situation, but Instead, those already in service are apparently being placed wholly at the disposal of the Associated, which is now the ally of the Southern Pacific. Of the situation the Los Angeles Express says: "Merely a traffic arrangement," said Southern Pacific officials today, in discussing the transfer of UOO oil cars to the Associated Oil Company.

"It is the costliest 'traffic arrangement' that the petroleum men of California ever have been forced to reylled the men who handle the liquid fuel. However, none of the oil handlers wished to be quoted. They had experienced wars of this character previously. A personal part in the differences urising never had resulted In good to the companies giving voice to their sentiments. Nevertheless the transfer of oil-tank ears to the Associated has given rise tii a ufueral alarm among shippers in the State.

"Car shortage" on the Southern Pacific Is an ancient story. In Hie iniliiiy days of olldom, when Southern California wells, without exreptlon. were (lowing freely and tlu' ilenMiid wr.r; vigorous, the Southern Pacific evoked "more ways than one to kill the cut." sniil oil lenders. The chief of these was oar shortage. The price of oil re- sjioiuied to the availability of oil-tank service, to a great extent.

During (he past year the railway company has given assurance to oil men that difficulties would be overcome, it was announced that many tiew tank had been ordered. Significant, is the anoiincement by the Associated that it will accept to "guaranty" delivery in specified time. The fact that the Karri man railway company became interested In California crude oil about three years finally becoming Identified with the big Associated merger, lend? Interest to the new state of The Associated now has command of the field so far as inland shipments are concerned. The big fields depending upon car service from the Bspee seem to be at the mercy of the Associated, now highly favored by the Harriman line. The Bakersfleld district, suffering from car shortage for three years, is tied up absolutely, and the Associated, through arrangement with the Southern Pacific, Is in command there.

Arizona, a market which has presented an Increasing demand for the past two years, now Is a field at the command of the Associated which can "guaranty" delivery for a consideration. NEW STRIKE IN VIRGIN FIELD Mayor Harper of Angeles, who IK heavily interested In the new Utah oil field, received word yesterday from Utah that oil has been struck in a new locality in the Virgin Valley. The new strike has been made at Fillmore, about twenty miles nearer the railroad. In the Fillmore fleld the oil is largely mixed with gas. At, Cedar City eight miles in the opposite direction, wells are being bored, but only gas has been obtained, al- I hough there are large quantities of it and strong pressure.

A crew of Standard Oil well drillers has been brought from Independence, Kansas. These men admit that they have orders to sink hole 2000 feet and then shoot the well. Surveyors employed by the same coir puny are charting the field and making accurate maps of the Standard holdings and all adjoining territory. The Standard is especially active in the fleld and It is claimed, is buying almost daily at prices Ringing from $25 to $1000 per aero. FOOTBALL TEAM STARTS TRAINING FIRST PEAOTICE OF SEASON TONIGHT.

Co 1013 Street, Fresno, Cal. NEW EMPIRE BILL IS WELL LIKED CLEAN ACTS PRESENTED IN VAUDEVILLE. Two New Teams and Contortionist are New Features This Week. A good audience attended the initial show of the new Empire bill last night, and responded well the efforts of the performers. The program contains two new team acts, and a female contortionist.

On the whole the hill is a good one, though lacking any star acts. One knows pretty well what to expect when a contortionist act. is billed. Miss Maybelle Meeker, though, who might be meeker yet, does good work. In her first appearance she sings a neat little song in a voice that Is possibly a trifle shrill.

She is gowned in a. fetching costume of black, trimmed with gold, and none of the front row Johnnies hut will admit the under-gar- nients, gotten up in the same style, are distinctly classy. In the second part of her act she displays an extremely shapely figure in tights, and ties herself Into knots and half hitches, does (he ultra-Grecian bend, and throws somersaults in the fashion of contortionists the world over. She gets a good measure of applause. Machine Performers.

Next on the program are Hale and Harding, billed as singing and talking machines. Their act Is a trifle disappointing at first, but before It Is finished the audience has caught the spirit of the thing, and the local hits which the team uses all help out In the general effect. Te audience wanted still more last night after the regular act had been finished. William and Ollie Francis, whose figures resemble each other about as much as the letters 1 and 0, supply the concluding feature of the bill. Their act is termed "The Bachelor Maid and the Rube." Instead of being a connected playlet, however, as might bo supposed, It Is much like the Hale Harding act, a loose comedy sketch.

The buxom Ollie, however, has a surprisingly good mezzo soprano voice, and whether or not a strl of the pumpkin district, who hliishlugly confesses CIRCUS DID ML IN SAN FRANCISCO RINGLINGS FIND NEW CITY SOUND. The Attraction Did More Business There This Year Than Ever Before. Riugllng Brothers' c-rrciis save its final performance in San Francisco Monday night. The circus wan the best ever seen in San Francisco, and James Brady, agent for Ulnglinj? Brothers, reported that the present trip to the city was the successful, financially and In every other way, that the circus ever had hure. "There la no better way to test the isoundness of a city than to note the patronage of a circus," said Brady.

"We travefed over 301)0 miles, as matter of fact, from Boston, ro In San Francisco and on Coast. The great amount of building now being done here has not been a detriment to the circus business. On rhe contrary, we did a better business here this time than ever, and this shows the spirit of the people. "The circus Is a Rind of meeting place for the whole family; its afin is to attract and please everybody; hut people do not patronize a circus when oppressed or in poverty Therefore, I know of no better testimony to the soundness of the city than that of thu box-office receipts of Rlngling Brothers circus tonight. The city has the same pleasure-loving spirit as of old, and, with its wonderful rebuilding and growth, It will be a greater city than over" to sixteen summers, can be termed a bachelor maid is not a question to be argued over.

William, as the "Reuben Kid" does good work, too, and the couple finish their act with the old, but ever popular "Now Are You On." The moving pictures are about of the usual standard, and the Illustrated song, rendered by Ollie Gotchett, Is on the same theme as all others which have been served up to the Empire patrons for the past many weeks, loving couple for the first verse, dying hero for the second. The bill as a whole is a good one, however, and the jokes are all clean and free from reproach. Grounds Are Cleared and a Good Bunch of Players Are Out For Work. After the football fleld at the new High School was put Into shape for practice last night, by a squad of husky players with pitchforks, ehovels and hoes, the same squad of huskies turned out after school this evening for the first practice of the season with the pigskin.
