"It's odd, I guess, I never studied up on the game," he said. "All I did was play it. I knew who Lou Gehrig was. A great player. That's about it except for the old movie when he calls himself the luckiest man on the earth even though he knows he can't play anymore and that he is dying." A year ago, Ripken said he was embarrassed at his .219 batting average at midseason.

He ended the first half this season batting .348, the best average for a shortstop since Lou Boudreau was at .358 in 1947. "No one is talking about me needing a rest this year," Ripken said. "I've heard so much of that that I really am pleased to have it go away a while." STARS from B-1 Ripken carries himself with the dignity of a Joe DiMaggio and the endurance of a Lou Gehrig. Having played 1,491 consecutive games, Ripken is within a reasonable shot at Gehrig's iron-man feat of 2,130 consecutive games. He even admits he has begun to read up on Gehrig's career.

avoided it before, purposely avoided it," said Ripken, whose three-run homer Tuesday led the American League to a 4-2 victory, its fourth in a row over the National League. "I just never believed in taking a day off for the sake of taking a day off," Ripken said. "It doesn't do any good thinking about your problems. I believe in working your way through them." HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Pat Mahomes of the Or-lando SunRays was named the Southern League's Most Valuable Player in the Class AA Ail-Star Game on Wednesday night as the American League defeated the National League, 8-2, before an announced crowd of 4,022 at Joe Davis Stadium.

Mahomes, who was credited with the victory, entered the game in the second innning and pitched two scoreless innings. He struck out two and walked one. The American League got all the runs it needed with two out in the first inning. Jim Thome of Canton-Akron (Indians) of the Eastern League and John Jaha of El Paso (Brewers) of the Texas League singled. Mark Howie of Midland (Angels) of the Texas League then hit a three-run home run.

Howie, who was named MVP of the Texas league, drove in four runs. It was the first time in Class AA history that an All-Star Game was played involving players from the Southern, Texas and Eastern Leagues. "This is July in Fort Worth, Texas," King said. "These greens don't have a chance. They look a lot worse than they really are, but they aren't optimum.

The speed isn't Open speed." -A more pertinent issue is whether King can return to Open speed. No golfer has won three consecutive Opens, although King insists playing in an Open is no more special than competing in the Crestar-Farm Fresh Classic or the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic. "I haven't built my year around trying to win it," she said. "It's the Open, but it's still just a golf tournament." But there's no ducking the attention. All week, King has been bombarded with questions similar to the ones Curtis Strange heard last year, when he attempted to become the first man since Willie Anderson 85 years earlier to win three Opens in a row.

Strange stayed in contention through three rounds in the 1990 Open at Medinah, 111., before shooting a final-round 75 that dropped him into a tie for 21st. Hollis Stacy was the last before King there have been four to win two consecutive Opens. Stacy won at Hazeltine in 1977 and at the Country Club of Indianapolis in 1978. Going for her third title in a row, in 1979 at Brooklawn Country Club (Fairfield, she stayed within range of the leaders before finishing in a tie for 15th. "I've thought about it and decided, why think about it now until it happens?" King said.

"There's been a lot of talk and questions about three in a row. I'll be happy when the week's over, no matter what happens." Picking challengers most likely to block King's bid for an Open three-peat begins with the threesome of Beth Daniel, Pat Bradley and Patty Sheehan. However, Daniel has never won an Open, Bradley's only Open victory came 10 years ago and Sheehan a three-time Open runner-up is struggling with a bruised hand. "I'm not overly thrilled with my golf game, but I think I'm playing well enough to contend," Daniel said. "Heat will be a huge factor.

I've had heat stroke before, so I'm careful with it." 1 99 Li 25" $T)f 99 U) Li $3 (0)95 17570HR-13 P18580R-13 21.99 P21575A-15 28.99 P19575R-14 24.99 P23575R-15 32.99 P18580R-13 31.99 P21575R-15 38.99 P19575R-14 34.99 P23575R-15 41.99 P18580R-13 36.99 P19575R-14 40.99 P21575R-15 44.99 P23575R-15 48.99 18560HR-14 54.99 195-60HR-15 56.99 20560HR-15 57.99 23560HR-15 63.99 LOW, LOW PRICES ON ALL OTHER SIZES, TOO NO CARRY OUTS, NO DEALERS LOW, LOW PRICES ON ALL OTHER SIZES, TOO NO CARRY OUTS. Strange built his year trying to earn a third consecutive men's Open title last year, but failed at Medinah. King, however, didn't even want to play Colonial Country Club until this week's 46th championship, which begins today. King said she doesn't think the expected near 100-degree weather will be a factor.

"We've played in a lot of hot weather recently, and I think the wind will be more of a factor than the heat," she said.
