Manley released from prison By The Associated Press HUNTSVILLE, Texas Dexter Manley walked out of prison Monday and hopped into a black Mercedes, freed on parole after serving nearly 15. months of a four-year term for cocaine possession. "I'm OK," the former Washington Redskins star-" 1 said after heading down a stairway outside the Walls Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and hugging his girlfriend.

"It's been'a soul searching. The only thing I can say is don't judge me by what I say, judge me by my actions," Manley won parole for good behavior. He had. pleaded guilty to two counts of cocaine possession after repeated suspensions from football and ar" rests for illegal drug use. His last arrest, in 1995 in his native Houston, got him tossed behind bars.

Manley emerged from the prison with 105 other freed inmates and was dressed in a light-blue, short-sleeve shirt and gray pants. Baseball BALTIMORE Jon Miller, the voice of the timore Orioles for a generation of baseball fans, agreed Monday to a five-year contract with the .7 San Francisco Giants. Miller, who apparently made owner Peter Angelos unhappy with his frank commentary on the team, said he would leave his heart in Baltimore even though he was pursuing his career 3,000 miles away.Giants offi- cials said Miller will handle play-by-play duties on KNBR radio and KTVU-TV in San Francisco. He replaces Hank Greenwald, who retired this year after 16 seasons with the Giants. Miller will continue to anchor ESPN's Sunday night baseball telecasts.

Basketball SAN ANTONIO Former NBA All-Star Alvin Robertson was ordered Monday to serve six months in jail for a burglary conviction. Robert- son was convicted in October of burglarizing the apartment of ex-girlfriend Sharon Raeford. Jurors decided he should be placed on 10 years' probation and fined $10,000. Football WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Jim Colletto, unable to turn around a program that has not had a winning season since 1984, resigned Monday as Purdue football coach.

The Boilermakers are 2-6 this season. Colletto, who came to Purdue in De- cember 1990, compiled a 20-40-3 record in six sea- sons. He will coach the final three games this season, and the resignation will be effective when a new coach is hired. CINCINNATI Hamilton County's effort to sell seats in a new Cincinnati Bengals football stadium will begin in mid-December with a mailing to current season-ticket holders. Those ticket hold-, ers will have until April 30 to decide whether they will pay $250 to $1,500 or more for the right to continue to buy season tickets after the new stadium, is built.

Tennis PONTE VEDRA, Fla. Pete Sampras will finish the year ranked No. 1 for the fourth consecu- tive time. Sampras was ensured the top spot when Yevgeny Kafelnikov lost to Thomas Enqvist on Sunday in the final of the Paris Open. That meant the third-ranked Russian can't earn enough points to overtake Sampras.

Second-ranked Michael Chang lost his shot at No. 1 when he defeated in an early-round match in Paris. i'. I STAMFORD, Conn. Steffi Graf is all alone on top of the WTA Tour world rankings for the eight-'time in her career.

Monica Seles, co-ranked No. 1 with Graf since returning to the WTA Tour on Aug. 14,1995, fell to a co-ranking of No. 2 with Spain's Arantxa Sanchez Vicario following her semifinal loss to Jennifer Capriati last Saturday. Seles can move back up to a co-No, ranking this" week when she plays at the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland, Calif.

Graf, a native of Buhl, Germany, first reached the No. 1 ranking on Aug. 17, 1987, and held the spot for 186 consecutive weeks', the longest stretch of any professional tennis player, before Seles passed her on March 11,1991.
