I George Henderson, served at Roosevelt Hospital B3 The Courier-News Thursday, December 1 5, 1 983 Money questions thrown at Kean at town meeting Orville Tuttle TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Orville Frank Tuttle, a nationally known geologist and member of the National Academy of Sciences, died Tuesday. He was 67. Tuttle had been a professor and research scientist at both Stanford University and Pennsylvania State University. FUNERAL NOTICES Maria Hunt hoped for state support of the borough's library.

A high school student from Ed- -ison consulted the governor on his own personal educational woes. "The Boaru'of Education is moving the 9th grade into J.P. Stevens High school," explained David Bitkower. Claiming the high school was al- ready overcrowded, additional stu- dents would require "doubling up of lockers," and he had $27 stolen from his locker already this year, Bitkower asked Kean what recourse students could take. "Boards of education do have a difficult job," Kean replied.

But he suggested that Bitkower organize a group of students to speak with the board. "They should listen," he added. Following the open question-and- answer session between governor and governed, which Kean called "the oldest forum of democracry," he met more' intimately with stu- dents from Metuchen High school's American Political Institute. The discussion turned out to be more intimate, too. "I personally don't like abortion," said Kean, responding to one girl's question.

But, he said he recog-; nized that in a number of cases it i was necessary. Continued from Page Bl who said "technicalities" were keeping the city from receiving toxic waste cleanup money from the state Department of Environmental Protection. Kean promised to look into the problem, and blamed the legal tangle on the state's bureaucracy. "The laws affecting toxic waste cleanup can be incredibly complicated," he said. A Metuchen High school student, Jennifer Manheim, wanted to know about the death penalty.

"Will it just turn out to be life imprisonment?" she asked, explaining that the issue was discussed in one of her classes. Kean drew strong applause when he said the death penalty was "law in the state of New Jersey" and would be enforced. "If it saves some innocent lives, its worth it," said Kean. One Metuchen resident asked about the possibility of changing the name on the Byrne Meadowlands Arena, which was named for Kean's predecessor, Brendan T. Byrne.

"A bill is pending in the legislature," Kean replied with a smile. "And I promise to sign it the minute it hits my desk." Palleria said the criminal suit his office is pursuing against Callaghan does not affect the civil suit settlement. Adult ed audit reveals red ink Continued from Page Bl Hunterdon County Education ices Commission, which consists of a representative of each of the county's four regional high school dis- tricts Hunterdon Central, North Hunterdon, South Hunterdon and Delaware Valley.

The five high schools in the four districts donate "only classroom space. Prior to the institution of state-', wide budget ceilings in 1977, the high schools paid about $3 per high school student to the program, Wolsiefer said. Adult education dropped the payments because the budgetary re-; straints made it difficult for the schools to make the payments and because the program was operating with a surplus, he said. The program also has done without two positions this year, Wolsiefer said. The positions include that of a secretary and Josephine Knobloch, a special projects director who retired.

The program also is going to institute a voucher bookkeeping sys- tern that will enable the-adminis-' tration to keep a closer track of cash in the program. Continued from Page Bl "I'm a bit surprised the court reversed our decision," Palleria said. "The judge obviously felt Callaghan was a good candidate for the program based on his good record. "I can't agree with the judge's decision and we'll have to let the appellate courts decide the outcome," Palleria said. Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Brotz, who argued the case before D'Annunzio, said Callaghan's action constituted more than recklessness when he endangered the lives of Seelig and her two sons.

However, Callaghan's attorney, Francis Hartman of Mount Holly, argued his client has a good driving record, steady employment, no criminal record and would be a good candidate for the rehabilitation program. If Callaghan successfully completes the rehabilitation program, charges against him would be dropped, Hartman said. Palleria said he views the seriousness of Callaghan's actions differently. "He killed someone while recklessly driving a vehicle and he should not be permitted into the program unless there are extenuating circumstances," he said. "We don't believe there are any in this case." Another factor that supports his original decision not to permit Callaghan into the program, Palleria said, is the fact the two children were in the car that Callaghan was driving.

"This case isn't one that we consider appropriate for the leniency of the rehabilitation program," Palleria said. "He placed the lives of two children in danger."
