B-4 The Orlando Sentinel, Friday, June 2, 1989 Lakers enjoy scenery, especially from bench NBA PLAYOFFS A daily closeup By Roger Phillips KNIGHT-RIDDER NEWSPAPERS EASTERN CONFERENCE 3-of 5 4-of-7 4-of-7 THENBAL WESTERN CONFERENCE 4-ot-7 4-of-7 3-OT-5 Portland Boston I LA Lakers I I LA Lakers LA Lakers Houston I Seattle I lSeattle LA Lakers Denver Phoenix I Phoenix Phoenix Golden St. Golden St. Utah Detroit Detroit I ffj Detroit Milwaukee Milwaukee Atlanta Chicago I Chicago Cleveland I 1 Chicago Philadelphia 1 New York New York ing left knee of Indiana Pacers center Steve Stipanovich showed no improvement since April, and he says it is "a coin toss" whether he ever will play in the NBA again. The 7-foot center, the second player taken in the 1983 college draft, underwent knee surgery last November and missed the entire 1988-89 season. He has had five examinations since then to monitor the healing of a "dead spot" on his left thighbone.

Stipanovich, 28: "To be honest, it hasn't improved any as far as my pain is concerned. I think there's a very good chance I'll be back. I just don't know when. Whether I'll ever be able to play basketball again is impossible to say at this point. I don't think my career is over, but that is a possibility." Stipanovich has a career average of 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds.

TREE CRASHES CLEVELAND CAVALIERS center Wayne "Tree" Rollins was treated for minor injuries at South Fulton Medical Center and released after an automobile accident in Fulton County, Ga. Rollins, 33, a former Atlanta Hawks player, received minor injuries in the accident in which he was struck by another vehicle whose driver was charged with failure to yield the right of way. Compiled from wire reports reached The Finals and how long it took them to get there: It took the Lakers 17 exhausting playoff games to reach last year's finals, compared with 11 this season. Going into The Finals last year, the Lakers' four key starters Johnson, Byron Scott, AC. Gren and James Worthy had played a combined total of 2,405 minutes those 17 games.

Going into this year's finals, they've combined to play 1,643 playoff minutes. This year's bench trio is averaging 64.9 minutes a game. Last year's bench duo averaged 51.5. The two key players off the bench last year Cooper and Thompson averaged 16.1 points and 9.5 rebounds in the playoffs. The starters averaged 83.7 points and 28.1 rebounds.

This year, even though Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's statistics are down significantly, the starters collectively are scoring more (86) than last year and rebounding almost as much (28). Meanwhile, the bench trio of Cooper, Thompson and Woolridge is averaging 25.6 points and 12.8 rebounds. Woolridge, a free-agent signee last summer, shouldn't get all the credit for the rise of the bench. Cooper's defensive play against Kevin Johnson was a big reason the Lakers swept the Suns, and he has blocked six shots in 11 games, compared with nine in the 24 playoff games of a year ago. Cooper also is 12-for-28 from 3-point range in the postseason.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. One year ago at this time, the Los Angeles Lakers were in the midst of what would become a grueling seven-game Western Conference final victory over the Dallas Mavericks. This year, they're practicing in Santa Barbara, enjoying the coastal scenery, and resting and waiting for the NBA finals. Last year, the lack of significant help from the bench was a big reason for the Lakers' protracted playoff struggles, which culminated nonetheless in a second-consecutive NBA title. This year, the bench has helped put the Lakers on the beach.

"The bench is key," Magic Johnson said after Sunday's Western Conference final clinching victory in Phoenix completed a four-game sweep of the Suns. "Last year, we didn't get the play we wanted from them. This year, it's outstanding. Look at the stat sheet." The stat sheet doesn't lie. This year, three of the Lakers' seven non-starters Mychal Thompson, Michael Cooper and Orlando Wool-ridge have appeared in each Lakers playoff game.

Last year, only Cooper and Thompson came off the bench in each game. In other words, the addition to the roster of Woolridge and the new dimension he adds to the Lakers' bench has made a huge difference, in terms of how the Lakers El MACLEOD TO DECIDE DALLAS COACH John MacLeod, a candidate for the vacant head coaching position of the New York Knicks, was expected to announce by today whether he intends to remain as the head coach of the Mavericks. MacLeod met with owner Donald Carter on Wednesday night to discuss his future with the team. He then held a conference with General Manager Norm Sonju and Vice President Rick Sund on Thursday. MacLeod told assistant coach Richie Adubato that he would probably stay with the Mavs.

JAZZ GM RESIGNS DAVID CHECKETTS, who helped turn the Utah Jazz from NBA doormats to division champions in six years, resigned as general manager. "This is a difficult decision for me because the Jazz have become part of my life," said Checketts, 33. Orlando Twins shortstop Scott Leius singled to lead off the sixth but was forced at second by Greg Smith of Charlotte. Pulliam of the Memphis Chicks followed with his towering homer to left, putting the All-Stars ahead, 3-2. Ventura of the Birmingham Barons added a two-run double in the inning.

Orlando's Terry Jorgensen, who played the entire game at third, was 0-for-3. He flied out to center, grounded to third and reached on an error. Orlando first baseman Paul Sorrento, who jammed his knee sliding into second base Tuesday against Jacksonville, and pitchers Mark Guthrie and Paul Abbott did not play. "The game is something the players will remember the rest of the lives," said Greenville's Buddy Bailey, who managed the all-stars. "Winning just put more sugar on top of the cake." The four runs in the sixth were off John Shea, the loser, usually pitches for Knoxville, Toronto's Southern League affiliate.

Toronto had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Pat Borders singled in Derrick Bell, also a Knoxville Blue Jay. Toronto took a 1-0 lead in the second on doubles by Lloyd Moseby and Ranee Mulliniks. O-TWINS RESUME PLAY THE ORLANDO TWINS, with a ZV-game lead over the Jacksonville Expos in the Southern League East Division, are at home at Tinker Field tonight against the Columbus Mudcats. Game time is 7:05. Columbus will be the Twins' opponent through Monday, then the Greenville Braves will be here for a four-game series.

3B Gruber, Pulliam. HR Pulliam. ER BB SO to go all the way," Agassi, 19, said after he beat Paolo Cane of Italy, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, Thursday and led an American charge into the third round. Agassi, seeded fifth and one of six American men in the round of 32 the most in five years and twice as many as any other country has his heart set on being the first American since Tony Trabert in 1955 to win the French Open. "I'm a spoiled American," he said.

"We're used to having all the conveniences, so when we don't we are disappointed." Top-seeded Ivan Lendl, a Czechoslova-kian who has applied for American citizenship, victimized an American as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Derek Ros-tagno and moved closer toward his fourth French Open title. Defending champion Mats Wilander, seeded No. 4, has failed to win a tournament in eight months, but he beat Diego Perez, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. "I'm playing the best I've played in a long time," Wilander said. "I always play well here after coming off a bad season.

I enjoy playing here much more, and I want to win much more." Agassi was joined in the third round by U.S. teen-age sensations Michael Chang and Jim Courier of Dade City. Chang, seeded 16th, whipped No. 17 Pete Sampras, 6-1, 6-1, 6-L Unseeded Courier beat Jimmy Brown, 6-0, 7-5, 6-1. Lawson Duncan topped, Andrew Sznadjer, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
