'A FLORlt The Orlando Sentinel, Sunday, October 16, 1988 C-5 'Huskers' onslaught mows down Cowboys By Tom Perrin Hr 1 KRTN SERVICES Tech wrecks S. Carolina, ends streak Yellow Jackets hammer No. 8 Gamecocks, 34-0 tough to knock off his feet." Clark wasn't the only 'Husker with a big offensive output. Taylor ran for three touchdowns, passed for two more and finished with 140 yards rushing. In all, Nebraska's offense accounted for 662 yards.

But Jones had little reason to complain about his offense, either, in particular Heisman candidate Barry Sanders. Sanders was every bit the force that he's been the entire year, rushing for 196 yards on 35 carries and scoring four times. The porous OSU defense left Jones more room to criticize. In the first half, Nebraska scored on each of its possessions and amassed 452 yards in total offense. At haLftime, the 'Huskers led, 49-21.

ASSOCIATED PRESS 1 i .5 LINCOLN, Neb. Nebraska is supposed to reserve treatment like this for teams such as Kansas and Kansas State. Not Oklahoma State. And especially not this year, when the Cowboys are ranked No. 10 and lead the nation in scoring offense.

Final: Nebraska 63, Oklahoma State 42. And it wasn't that close. What the 'Huskers did to OSU on Saturday served as a reminder that the line between the Big Eight's top two teams and the other six is still as thick as ever. Before Oklahoma State even had a chance to think how much a victory could mean to its rising program, Nebraska had opened a 35-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. "We never did give ourselves a chance to get into the ballgame," Cowboys Coach Pat Jones said.

"I think, basically, we just got beaten very soundly." The first quarter was reminiscent both of Nebraska's 41-28 loss to UCLA earlier in the season and Oklahoma State's 52-15 rout of Texas In both games, the winning team delivered an early knockdown punch and coasted to the finish. But the force behind Nebraska's blow Saturday may have been the strongest of the three. "I thought we could score 10 or 14 points in the first quarter, but I had no idea we'd do what we did," Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said. The Nebraska ambush began on ASSOCIATED PRESS Tailback Ken Clark rambles for 1 of Nebraska's 5 1st-quarter TDs. Oklahoma State took over possession and appeared to be driving toward a score until Nebraska cor-nerback Charles Fryar picked off a Tim Gundy pass at the 'Huskers' 14 and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown to make the lead, 14-0. Gundy, who threw three interceptions, was picked off again on the next drive. Clark scored three plays later on a 9-yard run for a 21-0 lead. "We went out and made a lot of mistakes, we fell behind and they kicked our butts," Gundy said. Before the first quarter would mercifully end, 'Huskers quarterback Steve Taylor scored twice, first on a 60-yard run and again on a 43-yard scramble to make it 35-0.

Clark had the biggest day of his career, rushing for 256 yards on 27 carries and scoring three touchdowns. His performance was second only on the school's all-time list to Mike Rozier's 285 yards in 1983 against Kansas. "I think he showed great balance," Osborne said. ATLANTA Andre Thomas scored on a 51 -yard interception return and set up another touchdown with a 10-yard return Saturday as Georgia Tech ended a 15-game losing streak against Division I-A opposition by thrashing eighth-ranked South Carolina, 34-0.

Tech entered the game ranked No. 1 nationally in pass defense (95.8 yards per game) and held the Gamecocks to 151 passing yards. "There's not a whole lot you can say about this one," South Carolina Coach Joe Morrison said. "Georgia Tech took us to the woodshed. They just outplayed us.

I don't think we took them lightly." The Yellow Jackets (24), bolting to a 31-0 halftime lead with a near-flawless performance, hadn't beaten an NCAA I opponent since downing Duke, 34-6, late in 1986. "It was one of those days when everything went our way," Tech Coach Bobby Ross said. "We played almost a perfect football game. Our game plan on offense, defense and the special teams was perfect. We just executed." It was the first time the Gamecocks (6-1) had been shut out in 71 games, since dropping a 24-0 decision to Georgia in 1981.

Todd Rampley engineered touchdown drives of 79 and 88 yards on Tech's first two possessions, firing up a defense that shut down Carolina's high-powered attack. The Jackets picked off four passes by Todd Ellis, who was intercepted five times last week in a narrow victory over Virginia Tech. Ellis also lost a fumble on a sack by Sean Smith that set up a 29-yard field by Thomas Palmer in the second quarter. Palmer added a 35-yard field goal with 58 seconds left in the game after an interception. Rampley hit Steve Davenport with a 12-yard touchdown pass on Tech's First possession and then connected with Greg Lester for 48 yards to the Gamecocks' 30 to set up the first of two 1-yard scoring plunges by Stefen Scotton.

South Carolina plays at North Carolina State next week. Tech plays at North Carolina. OKLAHOMA 70, K-STATE 24 NINTH-RANKED Oklahoma (5-1, 2-0) ran for an NCAA-record 768 yards Saturday, including 123 and three touchdowns by Charles Thompson, in hammering visiting Kansas State (0-6, 0-2) in a Big Eight mismatch. The Sooners had 829 total yards. The 768 yards eclipsed Oklahoma's NCAA record of 758 set against Colorado in 1980.

MICHIGAN 17, IOWA 17 IOWA (3-2-2, 1-0-2) defensive end Joe Mott wrestled the ball from Michigan's Tracy Williams at the Hawkeyes' 1-yard Line with 1:21 left to preserve the tie with the 15th-ranked Wolverines (3-2-1, 2-0-1) in Big Ten action. Williams then took a handoff from Michael Taylor, cut through the right side of the line and fell toward the end zone as he was tackled by linebacker Melvin Foster. But before Williams hit the ground, Mott reached in and took the ball UCLA 38, CAL 21 TROY AIRMAN threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third as second-ranked UCLA (6-0, 3-0 in the Pacific 10) made a bid for the top spot with the victory over visiting California (3-3, 0-3). Aikman threw for scores of 52 yards to Paul Richardson in the first quarter and 40 yards to Reggie Moore in the second quarter. His 1-yard sneak just before halftime gave the Bruins a 24-10 lead.

ARKANSAS 27, TEXAS 24 QUARTERBACK QUINN Grovey ran 21 yards for a touchdown and set up two other scores to carry 17th-ranked Arkansas (6-0, 3-0) to the Southwest Conference victory over visiting Texas (3-3, 1-1). The Ra-zorbacks built a 24-3 lead, then withstood a rally. INDIANA 33, MINNESOTA 13 ANTHONY THOMPSON rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns and became Indiana's career scoring leader as the 18th-ranked Hoosiers (5-0-1, 3-0) hammered visiting Minnesota (2-3-1, 0-2-1) in a Big Ten game. The Hoosiers built a 19-7 halftime lead, then added touchdown runs by Thompson in each of the final two quarters. WYOMING 55, N.
