Do the royals have hobbies or regular work besides attending fund- raisers and other events? Roben A. Seiwa St. Ciair Shores, Mich. Gracing fund-raisers and the like is the job for all the royals. Each earns his or her keep by taking on a specific number of engagements per year. In fact, Diana, the most sought-after of them all, showed how peeved she was about losing her royal title in the divorce by resigning from numerous charities. The point? She no longer intends to work so hard. Most of the royals have combined private interests with the job. Charles, for example, often speaks out on architecture and the environment. Diana made AIDS one of her causes after the disease killed a good friend. A divorced Di still does royal work (but less of it). • Is it true that the parents of tennis superstar Pete Sampras don't go to his matches? Nancy Stamtach, Cincinnati (via AOL) Yes. Georgia and Sam Sampras say they're just too nervous. When Sam- pras, now 25, played in the 1990 U.S. Open, his parents said they wouldn't even watch on TV. (Sam- pras was sure they taped it, though.) Still, they're his biggest fans, along with his live-in love, DeLaina Mulcahy. • John Mahoney brings a note of reality to Frasfer as the curmudgeonly father of those snobbish Crane brothers. He's the reason I tune in Tuesday nights. Is he married? What else has he been in? B.J. Trave-se City. Mien. Mahoney, 56. who's never been married, has worked with some top actors: Richard Dreyfuss in Tin Men, Clint Eastwood in In the Line of Fire, Cher in Moonstruck. And that's all in the past 20 years; before then he was a medical journal editor. Still, Frasier costar David Hyde Pierce tells us Mahoney is "the best actor on the planet." Sampras' matches are too intense for his folks. • Few TV actors have a bigger following than Adrian Paul, star of the syndicated series The Highlander. Fans are hungry for information. Melissa Lenny, Madison, Miss. Ravenous is more like it. Paul is the most asked-about TV star on our "Who's News" hot line, has dozens of Web sites devoted to him and is the main topic for at least one chat group online. The former model and dancer is pleased with the attention, stirred anew by his appearance in a recent Victoria's Secret ad. He hopes all this will pay off in a film career; he made one movie last summer and is being courted to star in the newest Highlander feature. Paul, who's secretive about his age, is a London native who lives in L. A. with wife Meilani (one of Diet Pepsi's "uh-huh girls"). • I'm shocked that Daniel Benzali, who played steadfast lawyer Ted Hoffman last year on ABC's Murder One, won't be back. He was the show. Was it his choice to leave? Tom Dolan, Fort Bragg, Calif. Benzali and series creator Steven Bochco clashed on the direction the character took — but Benzali claims that's not why he left. His publicist says Benzali never planned to return, wanting instead to take advantage of the heat the show generated by going into movies. He's now filming Murder at 1600 with Wesley Snipes. At I year's end, Benzali will play I groom: He'll marry actress d Kim Cattrall (Mannequin), I who said yes to an uncon- § ventional proposal. Benzali * asked for her hand by leaving a message on her answering machine as he left to go on location; she accepted by leaving a message at his hotel. The concierge dutifully read it aloud, so all who were waiting to check in could hear: "Daniel — Yes, I'll marry you. Kim." • Film legend Clark Gable, who died in 1961, supposedly left a son. What happened to him? Donna Schreiber, Livemiote, Calif. John Clark Gable, 35, the legend's son by his fifth and last wife, Kay Spreck- les, lives in Malibu, Calif., and wants to follow in the footsteps of the father he never met (he was born four months after his dad's death). He's been studying acting and has had some small roles; a pending film deal would team him with Tyrone Power Jr. Although Gable wasn't working at press time, he has no trouble keeping busy with hunting, motorcycling and skeet shooting — interests inherited from Dad. Gable lives with his artist girlfriend and has several children from a past marriage. True romance: Margulies and Ron Eldard • All those guys on NBC's Eft get "Sexiest Men on TV" covers. What about the women? I especially like Julianna Margulies, who plays Carol Hathaway. She's intriguing. Vanessa James, Durham, N.C. What most people don't know about Margulies, 29, is that she and Ron Eldard, who played her romantic liaison on ER, paramedic Shep, are a couple offscreen, too. Neither talks about the relationship — she has said they agreed not to — but the word is she got him the ER job. That led to his own show (also on NBC), Men Behaving Badly, which has had mixed reviews. But Margulies, the third daughter of parents who divorced, needn't worry about her job. She has an Emmy on her shelf (from '94) and is getting six-figure movie offers, d With Monika Gunman in Los Angeles USA WEEKEND Online this week: Wednesday at 11 p.m. ET, chat with Olympic athlete Michael Johnson about gold medals, speed and his new book, Slaying (he Dragon.
