THE SALINA JOURNAL Almanac FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1996 83 JOYCE JILLSON Creators Syndicate Inc. HOROSCOPES • ARIES (March 21-April 19). You are moved by someone with steadfast convictions. Boredom has crept into your work, hindering your creativity. Let others see your artistic skills. Auditions, interviews and meetings lead to new jobs. • TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Resolve to change your personal habits. Combine forces with a partner. You have intellectual superiority but need someone to promote your abilities. Conflicts between two relatives undermine your position. • GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Strength comes from getting realistic. Sort out actual problems from imaginary ones. Temporary solutions only waste your time. Don't stay in a relationship that is going nowhere. Luck comes through competition. • CANCER (June 22-July 22). Love turns everything rosy. Schoolwork improves. Homemakers find a way to get a needed degree. Insecure friends could be jealous of a romance. A parent has a keen insight - you should follow it. • LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Be willing to loosen your grip on the controls. All growth requires some risk. Staying in an unhappy relationship is wrong. Apply for a glamour job -- you'll get it. Diffuse tension at work with laughter. • TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (November 1). You are a rising star. Sudden career and financial assistance comes in December. Don't wait to marry, as a good relationship makes everything work out. An Aquarius or Scorpio is the ideal partner. Legal problems end in February. Start fresh -- don't try to make an old business work. Raises arrive in April, but only if you plant the seeds now. • VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You bask in the glow of a potential love. A few words mean more than you know to a youngster or a lover. At the last minute, someone helps you financially. Retailers have luck with, new ventures. • LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22). Be open to the ideas of others. An unimportant encounter could change your life. Be aware that co-workers may not be as conscientious as you. Guilt serves no purpose, so forgive yourself. • SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21). Your intuition should be followed in business. Partners present a dilemma, which you can easily solve. Have faith in a new love. Things develop only when nobody is forcing the issue. You drive a good bargain. • SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Spend some time boosting your own confidence. Insecurity actually creates what you fear. Self-confidence is catching. Your timing is superb. Ask for raises. Talk about past achievements. • CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Go ahead and ask for approval. Superiors endorse your actions. Loyalty is repaid. Vary your routine. Luck comes through spur-of-the-moment actions. Embark on trips or new business ventures. • AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Surround yourself with friends, as this greatly impresses business associates. Your words are persuasive. Disregard vulgar gossip, and stay above the fracas. Financial needs will be met; have more faith. • PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Lucky deals are struck between lovers. A so-called friend is angling for business help. A salary increase is too little, too late. Look for a new job. Your financial history repeats itself if you are not careful. 'Zena' plays it safe this time BURBANK, Calif. — No horse for the ' Warrior Princess: This time, she was carried to Jay Leno's stage by two musclemen in loincloths. The last time Lucy Lawless, star of TV's "Xena: Warrior Princess" showed up for "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," her horse lost its footing and fell as she was taping a skit Oct. 8. She was hospitalized for a week with a broken pelvis. "I fractured some bones, but I'm on the mend, well and truly," she told Leno on Wednesday. Murphy sued over 'Nutty' film LOS ANGELES — Was the screenplay for Eddie Murphy's "The Nutty Professor" a big fat ripoff? Brothers Steven and William Patrick of New York claim Murphy and Universal Studios stole a screenplay "Brand New Me," that was rejected five years ago. It was about an overweight female geneticist who discovers an instant weight-loss formula. In Murphy's movie, he plays an overweight geneticist who discovers a formula that transforms him into a sleek ladies' man. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court seeks $15 million in damages and any profits Murphy, his production company and the studio made from the film. Universal had no comment. B.B.'s book won't be banned PARIS — A judge on Thursday turned down a request by one of Brigitte Bardot's ex-husbands and her son to ban her new memoirs as an invasion of their privacy. Since 400,000 copies of "Initials B.B." have already been sold, the demand by actor Jacques Charrier and son Nicolas Charrier to halt publication was essentially a moot point, Judge Alain Lacabar- rats ruled. In her book, Bardot says Jacques Char-, rier, who fathered her only child, slapped her around. The judge said Charrier could file another civil complaint seeking financial damages. T ADVICE Don't condemn woman who gave up children Dear Ann Landers: I just finished reading the letter from "U.M., Mesa, Ariz." and it made me cry. She said she wanted 4> to pursue her dreams and wasn't able to take care of her children. So she divorced her husband and gave him custody. I am the grandmother of two children whose mother walked out when her children were the same ages as "Mesa's." I can tell you the consequences of that mother's act because I have lived through it. Her husband will probably marry a woman who has her own children, as my son did. His stepchildren are college graduates with promising careers. His own children are totally messed up high-school dropouts. ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. One is an alcoholic. Both had drug problems in their teens. Who does "Mesa" think the stepmother will favor, her own children or the stepchildren? No woman's career is worth sacrificing her children's lives when they need her. Tell her to forget about pursuing her dreams and raise those children. They need her now full- time. — No Name, No State Dear N.N.N.S.: Before you condemn "Mesa," please make sure you have the facts straight. She did not abandon her children. Mesa was clinically depressed and sought professional help. She planned to see her children regularly and took the course of action she felt was best for everyone. Let's wish her well. Dear Ann Landers: Please reprint the letter about the girl who picked up a poisonous snake and it bit her. I'm a therapist and have used that story with TV TONIGHT patients who become involved in one self-destructive relationship after another because they refuse to learn from experience. Thank you, Ann. — Forewarned in Florida Dear Florida: Here it is, and I must say it's an excellent example of self-destruction. Thank you for asking: A young girl was trudging along a mountain path, trying to reach her grandmother's house. It was bitter cold, and the wind cut like a knife. When she was within sight of her destination, she heard a rustle at her feet. Looking down, she saw a snake. Before she could move, the snake spoke to her. He said, "I am about to die. It is too cold for me up here, and I am freezing. There is no food in these mountains, and I am starving. Please put me under your coat and take me with you." "No," replied the girl. "I know your kind. You are a rattlesnake. If I pick you up, you will bite me, and your bite is poi- sonous." "No, no," said the snake. "If you help me, you will be my best friend. I will treat you differently." The little girl sat down on a rock for a moment to rest and think things over. She looked at the beautiful markings on the snake and had to admit that it was the most beautiful snake she had ever seen. Suddenly, she said, "I believe you. I will save you. All living things deserve to be treated with kindness." The little girl reached over, put the snake gently under her coat and proceeded toward her grandmother's house. Within a moment, she felt a sharp pain in her side. The snake had bitten her. "How could you do this to me?" she cried. "You promised that you would not bite me, and I trusted you!" "You knew what I was when you picked me up," hissed the snake as he slithered away. Best bets 7 p.m. — "NBA Basketball," TNT, Salina cable channel 41.
