Max Branyon's fishing forecast Salt Water Cold weather in the North is driving fish southward along the Atlantic coast. King mackerel fishing has been good off Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach. The best fishing seems to be southeast of Ponce Inlet from 18 to 35 miles offshore. Bottom fishing for sharks has been good on the all-day party boats that are fishing some 25 to 35 miles offshore. One boat returned with 50 sharks from 3 to 4 feet long and one 6-footer.

Bottom fishing is good on those boats also. Snapper in various sizes from small vermilion to 35-pound sow snapper are being reported along with some black grouper. Fishermen out of Port Canaveral are enjoying some excellent Spanish mackerel and blue fish angling. Schools of the mackerel, blues and jacks are moving north and south of the inlet from 8-foot to 100-foot water. In fact, many anglers are catching them off the jetties leading out of the port.

Good lures to cast are the Clark Spoon and Diamond Jigs. Small, live mullet will also do the trick. Tripletails are hitting live shrimp along the buoys outside the port. At Sebastian Inlet the main attraction is still snook fishing. If you don't mind fishing elbow to elbow to with other anglers, try fishing either the north or the south side of the inlet with Bucktail Jigs or grubs.

Snook are plentiful up to the 15-pound class. Fish the outgoing tides at night. For less company, pick a late night tide. A few flounder are hitting live finger mullet on the southside jetties and along the catwalk. Oak Hill fishing is improving for trout around Marker 31 to Beacon 42 on green tail touts.

Shrimpers have been dipping from 2 to 5 gallons of shrimp, but this could decline any night with the downside of the full moon. The latest word on the opening of Playallnda Beach for surf fishing is next Sunday. Fresh Water: Bass fishing is picking up in most lakes with somewhat cooler water temperatures. Follow the Solunar Table in the Sports Section for major activity times. One area angler limited out on largemouth bass by following the table and fishing midmorning with crankbaits and Culprit plastic worms in a small Orlando lake.

Also, don't overlook night fishing for bass. Fish the shoreline weeds and docks with plastic worms. Some good bass sites at Lake Tohopekallga are Friar's Cove at the south end of the lake and the Overstreet area on the west side. Use plastic worms: the Tequilla Sunrise and the Shiny Red Shad are good lures. Speck fishing is picking up in most lakes, but some cooler weather is still needed to get the speckled perch congregated.

Lake Harney anglers are catching some good stringers by drifting the open water with live minnows. Specks are also good to the north along the SL Johns River at Lake Dexter. Fish the bonnets or drift the open water with live minnows for best catches. Bream are still hitting near Whaley'8 Landing out from the grass in open water at Lake Tohopekaliga. Use live redworms and lish one foot off bottom.

Catfish up to 20 pounds are hitting in Lake County where Dora Canal empties into Lake Eustis. Use cutbait (gizzard shad is good) and fish from 8 p.m. to midnight to catch three or four of the big catfish from 8 pounds to 20 pounds. Speck fishing is still good at night under the Howey Bridge and the Dead River Bridge. Solunar Tables A.M.
