Sweet On "Candy" In Derby SHOEMAKER'S MOUNT — Candy Spots, Rex Ellsworth's Kentucky Derby eligible, sticks his tongue out as Willie Shoemaker pats his neck before a workout. The team made it six for six in the Florida Derby. YCAZA'S MOUNT — Panamanian rider Manual Ycaza believes he can win his first Kentucky Derby with Harry F. Guggenheim's Never Bend, 2-year-old champion of 1962. Ycaza fondles his colt after winning the Flamingo. By FRANK ECK Ever since last fall racing people have been divided in their opinion between Candy Spots and Never Bend. Not even the owners or trainers of the respective colts will claim the best horse. Candy Spots won his first three starts, topping things with a victory over Never Bend in the Washington - Arlington Futurity. He then was retired. Never Bends won seven of 10 starts as a 2- year-old and was voted the divisional championship. The arguments are becoming more heated as Kentucky Derby time (May 4) approaches. Possibly the favorite in this one mile and a quarter test will be the result of a workout a day or two before the Churchill Downs race. However, while both horses are runners, respond to the whip and can cover a distance, this writer leans to Candy Spots. In Willie Shoemaker he has the best jockey. Manual Ycaza, the hot- tempered Panamanian who is Never Bend's regular rider, has very little luck when it comes to $100,000 races. Shoemaker beat Ycaza a number of times when the chips were piled high. There was the Chicago race last September. Never Bend led in the stretch but Shoe came on with Candy Spots to win the richest pot in history. In November there was the rich Garden State at Camden, N. 3. Ycaza on favored Never Bend finished third in the slop behind Shoemaker on Crewman, who is passing up the Derby. Those were Never Bend's only defeats in a string of nine races. In the ninth — the Flamingo at Hialeah this March — Ycaza won easily with Never Bend but there was no competition. Even in that race Ycaza didn't have the best of luck. Harry F. Ycaza had to hit his horse to straighten him out. Shoemaker wasn't in the Flamingo but there were times last year when Shoe, aboard Jaipur, proved a bit better than Ycaza who was riding Ridan. Ycaza had had only four Derby rides. His best was a second with favored Ridan last year when Decidedly set a track record. Shoemaker has had 11 Derby rides winning with Rex Ellsworth's Swaps in 1955 and Tomy Lee in 1959. About the only bad Derby ride ever put on by the Shoe came in 1957 when he tossed away a sure win with Gallant Man. In the last few strides Shoemaker stopped riding and Iron Liege, ridden by Bill Hartack, got a nose decision. Shoe went into hiding and .drew a fine and suspension. Now the Shoe rides out all THE OTTAWA HERALD Tuesday, April 30, 1963 previously had opposed stationing over an ICC team permanently in the troubled area. Although Premier Khrushchev assured U.S. Undersecretary of State W. Averell Harriman last week that he would support neutrality for Laos, some diplomatic observers here described Harriman's peace making mission to Moscow as hopeless from the start. "It flopped before it began," one Western observer said. "There is very little Russia can do today to influence the siutation positively in Laos." Derby mounts. Winning a Derby is old hat to him. Casey Miffed Over Letter NEW YORK (AP) - Manager Casey Stengel of the New York Mets scoffed today at the latest directive issued by Warren Giles, National League president, on the balk travesty. "Here is a full page letter with the latest order," Stengel said, commenting on the two balks called in the Mets' 4-2 victory Monday night over the Los Angeles Dodgers. "The last paragraph says: 'The easiest way to reduce or eliminate balks is for the managers and coaches to insist that their pitchers pause for the required length of time and conform with baseball rules.' "What do they expect us to do?" Casey added. "Run out on the field and yell 'stop' every time a pitcher starts to pitch? That's a good way to make a game last another two hours." infield.
