Sunday sports Nov. 7, 1982 Daiy World Section ma's begins "LSU's agony ends, 4-0-1 in conference play. Alabama, owning the nation's No. 7 ranking prior to the game, dropped to 7-2 for the year and 3-2 in SEC play. This loss ends any chance for Alabama to win the conference title and claim a Sugar Bowl berth.

"Ho ir they scored' SECOND QUARTER By Roger Brandt Daily World Sports Editor Birmingham, Ala. There is a sign in the upper deck of Legion Field which reads, "Birmingham Football Capital of the South." The "Football Capital of the South" was put into a state of shock as LSU whipped up on Alabama 20-10 in a Southeastern Conference encounter before a crowd of 77,230 here Saturday afternoon. 1 LSU's victory ended an 11-year frustration at the hands of Alabama and Paul "Bear" Bryant. And, more important, the win kept LSU in the hunt for the SEC championship. LSU, RANKED the country's No.

10 team, is still unbeaten as the Tigers are now 7-0 overall and first half," remarked Stovall. In the second half it appeared Alabama would make a comeback as the Crimson Tide put 10 quick points on the scoreboard, cutting LSU's lead down to 17-10 with 7:43 left in the third quarter. "At halftime I told our team we were staying with offensive and defensive game plan," Stovall pointed out. "We weren't going to try to sit on the lead. I didn't want to play conservative." Earner in the year LSU carried a 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter only to see Tennessee rally to claim a 24-24 tie.

That tie with Tennessee may now cost LSU a SEC championship and in that game Stovall played it conservative but it was a lesson learned which paid off against the Tide. THE VICTORY over Alabama was a long awaited one for LSU as Stovall explained to the media. "You people don't understand how it is to get hit in the mouth 11 years in a row," said Stovall. LSU's last victory over the Tide was in 1970, also in Birmingham (14-9). "This win really has not soaked LSU took control of the ball with 4:57 remaining in the game and ended any Alabama comeback hopes as the Tiger offense ran out the clock.

This put the Legion Field crowd in pain and toward the final seconds of contest, much of the crowd was gone except for the many thousands of Tiger fans who made the trip were eating up the victory. "WITHOUT A doubt this is my biggest win," voiced a non-emotional LSU football coach Jerry StovalL after, the 10-point victory. "Coach Bryant congratulated us on the win and said our teamis playing very well," said Stovall about his meeting with college football's winningest coach. In the first half, LSU dominated play. LSU held a 17-0 lead but more important Alabama failed to make a first down and had a total offensive production of only 32 ysrds.

STOVALL WOULDN'T agree that the Tigers dominated Alabama in the first half. "I have the worst seat in the house but I wasn't aware that Alabama didn't make a first down in the in yet, but I think it will be pretty good when it does," added Stovall. For the game Alabama finished with only six first downs, 45 yards rushing, 74 yards passing and a total offense of 119. BRYANT AGREED it was a whipping, saying, "I think that's the best beating we've had since the '60s. We started out playing defense well enough to win, if the offense gave us any help.

But the offense never did except a little while in the third quarter." The Bear, who has 322 wins under his belt, as usual was a graceful loser and gave LSU much praise. "LSU had the superior team and I know that they had the best coach. They were better prepared. Their line of scrimmage ate ours. Their defensive line of scrimmage ate our offense.

I didn't think anyone could do that. "I'm happy to see Jerry and his staff doing so well. Of course, not happy for us. Jerry and his staff and their entire team have done a great job in coming from 24-7 (last year's LSU loss to Bama) to what they did today."
