THE SALINA JOURNAL Money WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1996 03 ?"•- nfnyt? wOfffssm ECONOMIC CONFERENCE Conference offers economic forecast Bond market likes wage news 2-hour meeting shows how economic changes will affect Kansans By ALF ABUHAJLEH The Salinn Journal Three Kansas economists will present a forecast of the 1997 local, , state and national economies at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Business and Economic Outlook Conference. The Nov. 8 breakfast meeting Will be at the chamber's conference room, 120 W. Ash, from 7 to 9 a.m. It is open to the public. . Norman Clifford and Charles Krider, economists at Kansas University's Institute for Public Policy and Business Research, will speak about the national and state economies. Kevin Boyd, an economist at Kansas Wesleyan University, will give a Salina forecast. Gerald Cook, president of the ' chamber, said the conference usu- "Whetheryou are a bank executive or work at a manufacturing facility or at a fast-food restaurant, your life will change with the changes in the economy." Gerald Cook Salina Area Chamber of Commerce president ally attracts local business owners and community leaders. That's unfortunate, he said, because the state of the economy affects most wage earners. "We would love to see a wider mix of people at this year's conference," Cook said. "Whether you are a bank executive, or work at a manufacturing facility or at a fast-food restaurant, your life will change with the changes in the economy." Clifford said the charts and graphs might appear dull. But job security, wages and mortgage pay- ments, issues that concern many, are affected by the economy. Chris Hoffman, president of the UMB Bank Salina Center, 100 S. Santa Fe, has attended most of the conferences. He said the information helps business owners understand how trends in other industries might affect them. "It gets you ready for next year's battle." he said. "You get a feel for what the economy is up to." So how is the economy doing? According to Clifford, economic growth in Kansas is surpassing most of the rest of the nation. The labor force has increased by 2.2 percent this year, its fastest rate since 1992. But job creation grew even faster at 2.6 percent, trimming the jobless rate to 4.0 percent from 4.4 percent a year ago. In Salina, where fewer than 765 people are looking for a job, businesses are eager to lure more skilled labor to town. Boyd said Salina's low unemployment rate will likely lead to wage hikes and an increase in the labor pool. Workers in the manufacturing sector in Saline County saw their paychecks grow by 8.5 percent between 1993 and 1995, he said. "It is a very favorable (economic) climate right now," he said. "But you always have to watch out or the economy will swing." Tickets to the conference cost $12 in advance and $15 at the door for chamber members and $20 for the public. Prices include a hot breakfast and hand-out materials. To register, call the chamber at 827-9301. By Scripps Howard News Service WASHINGTON — Employment costs rose a modest 2.8 percent in the 12 months ended Sept. 30 as wage gains continued to be offset by the moderating price of fringe benefits, the government reported Tuesday. The Labor Department's Employment Cost Index, the first important gauge of economic activity scheduled for release in advance of next week's elections, had been awaited by analysts for any hint of inflationary wage pressure that could push interest rates higher.
