-fcOURIER NEWS SPORTS WEDNESDAY, JULY 19, 2000 E-5 Clac ks looking to matte history in women's S00 OLYMPIC TRACK RELD TRIALS By TOM WEIR USA Today trademark Louisville Slugger. Joe's confrontational, disciplinarian reign as principal at Eastside High School in Paterson, inspired the 1989 movie "Lean on Oscar nominee Morgan Freeman portrayed Joe Clark, who still proudly recalls suspending 300 students in a single day, "To the great dismay of liberals everywhere." In Joe's household there was an unwavering rule about which races his children would run. "I never let my kids run sprints," he said. "They had to get away from the stereotypical thing that blacks can't run distances. I've found that distance running most consistently produces disciplined people." He told his children, "Sprinters, they're a dime a dozen." That philosophy was fine with Joetta, who, by 16, was running in New York's prestigious indoor meet, the Millrose Games.

But for a 12-year-old J.J., being brother and a cousin. The men spent the night on the floor, and soon after Joetta began relaying messages between her brother and her future sister-in-law. "I don't know where I would be if J.J. and I hadn't hooked up," Jearl said. "I think it would have been very hard for someone other than J.J.

to get me to run the 800." Jearl's entire track career is a saga of reluctance. She was a high school long jumper and 100-and 200-meter runner. But for years she resisted running even the 400, in which she has been the top-ranked American woman six of the past seven years and in which she placed second in Sunday's Olympic trials final. At Alabama Jearl sometimes hid when it was time to run the 400. And when her college coach informed her she was going to the 1988 U.S.

Olympic trials she said, "No I'm not. I'm tired." Goaded into going, she was select ed as an alternate for the 4x400-meter relay team, and a whole new World opened for her. "Before that, I didn't know there was anything beyond college track," Jearl said. "I went to Seoul, talked to other athletes and realized it could be a living." She blossomed as a 400-meter talent but didn't run her first 800 until 1992, then didn't return to the event until 1995, at age 29. "I'm the difficult one in our group," she said.

"I'm still a sprinter. That's my mentality. I want to sprint and nothing else." In retrospect, there's no question she could have been winning 800-meter races a lot sooner, but she has no regrets. "I think this is the path I had to take," Jearl said. "I think if I had been pushed into this too fast I would have said I don't like this, it hurts, I quit.

It couldn't have been planned any better." forced into the 800 made him want to run away from the track, not on it. "When the 800 would come, he would go and hide," Joe said. "He really wanted to be a sprinter. He finally succumbed, after many arduous confrontations, and many bloodhound trackdowns." And, many years later, J.J. made the same argument for running the 800, with another equally unwilling runner.

Given that Joe Clark describes the former Jearl Miles as "humble, a good country girl, a church person," it's surprising to hear her reveal she first met J.J. "when he spent the night in my hotel roonv" The longer version of that story is that there was a shortage of hotel rooms before a 1989 meet at George Mason University. Joetta agreed to share her room at a Holiday Inn with Jearl but said she also already had promised accommodations to her first-round competition Thursday. The veteran is three-time Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs, 37, who for 21 consecutive years has been ranked among the top 10 U.S. women in the 800.

She's the only Clark who always loved the 800. The coach is J.J. Clark, 35, Joet-ta's brother and an Ail-American in the middle distances at Villanova University. He coaches at the University of Florida. The member by marriage is two-time Olympic medalist Jearl Miles-Clark, 33, J.J.'s wife.

She holds the U.S. record in the 800. Hazel, 22, is the younger sister of Joetta and J.J. She was the 1998 NCAA champion in the 800. And there's one more who must be mentioned, father Joe Clark, who once glared at the world from the cover of Time, brandishing his SACRAMENTO, Calif.

The address number for Hazel Clark's new townhouse in Gainesville, is 123. She and her family hope that's an Olympic omen. The three running members of Team Clark, who are coached by yet "'another Clark, seek to make history at the U.S. Olympic track and field "trials with a 1-2-3 finish in the -women's 800 meters. Doing so in Sunday's final would make them the first family to sweep U.S.

berths in an Olympic track event. But the funny part of this potential family reunion at the 2000 Summer Olympics is that, for most of the Claries, the mere mention of the grueling 800-meter race once caused boundless dread and despair. To understand, let's begin with a roll call of the Clarks, who will face sccnon FOOTBALL VEGAS LINE ON TV TODAY Tennessee at Chicago. 8 m. Denver at San Francisco, 9 p.m.
