The Raddatz submarine boat Is now undergoing regular tests, and the claims of the Inventor are generally allowed to be just by those who have seen the craft In operation; still, the claim made some time ago that the boat had reached, and had been successfully operated at a depth of about 30 feet, the deepest water In the vicinity, seems to have been doubted. To put this doubt at rest, the inventor gave another exhibition Monday, when a reporter of the "Northwestern" was one of the H.

uspraaeu ruvuvmWSS In the water for a quarter of an hour, during which time it did not vary its depth as much as an inch. Observations were made through the pilot house windows, and showed the water more transparent than at the bottom or at the surface, and, although the shadowy outlines ni some fish were seen further away, none were seen near the boat as it again slowly ascended until within 15 feet of the surface, where the gray tinge of daylight prevailing in the depths began gradually Increasing in Intensity until, at a depth of 5 feet, there was sufficient light to read, and within 2 feet of the surface the water was lighted up by the sun's rays until it resembled a solid mass of bright, transparent gold, from which the shlj broke at 607 o'clock, having been submerged thirty-two ndnutes. During that time all the machines seemed to operate la a satisfactory manner, and whether at a depth, of 10 or 30 feet, the Inmates of the ship experienced no discomfort. Were it not for the manometers, which plaluly Indicated 'the depth of the ship beneath the surface, and the almost entire absence of light In the water, It would be hard to believe that one was far beneath the waves, with boats darting around on the surface above and far beyond the reach of th strongest storms that have ever swept these waters. The ship was put together In this city last summer and successfully tested to withstand the pressure due to a depth of COO feet It carries on board a tested machine powerful enough to bring it from a depth of 910 feet, were the shell of the ship strong enough to stand the pressure at this depth.

Some of the hydraulic gauges were furnished by a New York firm, but most of the apparatus was made to order by the piece and set together in this city, some of the parts coming from France. The ship has been under water for three and one-half hours at a stretch, and the air machines have been worked twenty-four hours without cessation, and there is little doubt that the ship could remain that length of time under water were it necessary. Fashionable hairdressers seem to agree that ere long we shall once more be invaded by the chignon, an abomination which reigned supreme a number of yeana ago. The invasion may be beaten off, as was that of the hoopskirt some time ago, and every woman with a well-shnped '-voutly hopes that such will be the case, for the shape of the head is of course utterly lost in such a fashion as this. In England It has already made considerable headway, and the Eastern anglomanlacs doubtless will ere long fall ino line. Indeed, one or two women, recently, from the "other side" ha-e already been seen In New York carrying a loose wad of hair covered with a large net at the back of the head. No, the smallest of Its disagreeable features Is that.

In the majority of cases It necessitates the wearing of a quantity of false hair. Wheat Yon Eat BTota. October is the month of nuts, and for the next few weeks boys and girls In common with the squirrels and monkeys will take a special pleasure In these delectable seeds. How the four-footed gourmands manage It would be hard to say, but human beings have discovered that nuts are not always digestible. They have also learned that it is possible to eat nuts In quantities and suffer no 111 effects by the simple device of dipping the kernels in salt If you are curious to know just how salt aids digestion put a kernel on a plate and cover It with salt.

After two or three hours you will see that the nut has become a soft, pulpy mass. Xot Bnllt (or It "I understand Smithkins has gone Into politics." "So I've heard." The bot tom was reached in one minute, the machinery controlling the descent hav-ini; a forw of 100 pounds in excess of the natural buoyancy of the ship, which Is about 1.000 at all times. The temperature of the air inside the ship was 72 and remained constant at this within one-half degre during the entire experiment, which lasted about half an hour.

The air in the ship wns all that could be desired and was delivered in pure condition and in proper quantities for respiration, there being none of the close, oppressive feelings usually experienced by occupants of a small and confined air space, their entire absence being due to a peculiar process of electrification to which the air is subjected after being chemically purified, a process which is original and which was first applied to the air in this ship, and which has proved entirely safe and satisfactory throughout the numerous tests and ex periments made this summer. The interior of the ship is lignted by means of Edison low potential incan descent lamps of small size, giving lit tle heat and consuming no air while burning. Electricit.r for operating the lamps, as well as most of the other electrical appliances on board, is furnished by primary and storage batteries, which are placed in a separate room forward of the conning tower, and directly under the latter are placed the various gauges, valves, levers, indicators, to control not only the electric current, but also the action of machines In different parts of the ship. In this conuinir tower are placed the eight windows commanding eve.7 point of the compass, and enabling the cam-tain of the ship, who is stationed here, to readily see where he is going both cn or beneath the surface. At the depth of 30 feet, at which the ship now rested, little could be seen without the aid of artificial light, as the light of the sun Illuminated the bottom imperfectly, the water of the river being in an unusually non-transparent condition at this season of the year.

In the dome Is also placed a powerful search light, which in reasonably clear water lights tip the path of the ship some hundreds of feet ahead. The ship was finally raised to within 20 feet of tte surface and then hgl The wealth of onr lnnptinr In nhown by the fact that "hang It op" and "chalk ft down" meJin precisely the same thloa.
