4B DAILY WORLD SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1996 Navy handles Tulane 'S-'M. Wmli 'S am I Ik i i Photo by James Reedy ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) After Chris McCoy deftly handled the running and passing chores, the brigade took care of the goal posts. McCoy carried ran a school-record 44 times for 214 yards, scored three touchdowns and passed for two as Navy qualified for a bowl bid by beating Tulane 35-21 Saturday. McCoy scored on runs of 10 and 3 yards in the first quarter, threw touchdown passes of 28 and 42 yards in the third period and clinched the victory with a 1-yard run with 5:05 remaining.

"I'm sure hell be sore tomorrow," Navy coach Charlie Weatherbie said. "He did a great, great job of carrying the ball." After the game, hundreds of Midshipmen climbed from the stands and tore down the goalpost at one end of the field to celebrate the victory and Navy's 4-0 record at home this season. "That was basically because it was our last home game and we went undefeated at home," Weatherbie said. "That's something McCoy, a 5-foot-10 junior, became the fifth player and the first quarterback in Navy history to run for 1,000 yards in a season. He has 1,130 yards in 230 attempts an average of 4.9 yards per carry.

He accounted for 312 of Navy's 424 yards in offense. Jerald Sowell scored two touchdowns for the Green Wave (2-8), who have lost six straight. Tulane stayed in the game until late in the fourth quarter, but McCoy was just too much to handle. The victory gave Navy (7-2) six wins over Division I-A teams, making the team eligible for its first bowl bid since 1981, the last time the Midshipmen won seven games in a season. With only 26 seconds left in the game, he hit Michael Davis with an 8-yard scoring strike to give Texas Southern its first lead of the game. Southern had a 20-6 lead at half-time, after two Steve Wofford touch down runs and two Leach field goals. Texas Southern was held to only two field goals in the first half.

Altrevion Joubert set up the opening drive with a 45-yard kickoff return.

Chester Randal had the scoring honors on a 14-yard TD pass from Raider quarterback Collins Leblanc. Al Frilot added the PAT to put Northwest a 7-0 lead. Port Allen answered right away with a 56-yard march that climaxed with a 12-yard scoring run by Warner Anderson. The extra point was missed, which kept Northwest ahead a 7-6. Anderson added another TD on the Pelicans' next possession to put Port Allen on top 14-7.

The score remained until halftime, although Northwest had seven chances to score in the red zone before intermission. Leblanc hit Randall on a 33-yard pass to the Pelican 15-yard line, But after two incomplete passes, Leblanc connected twice with Joubert to move to the 3 for first and goal. But the Raiders could only answer with three incomplete passes. "That took a lot out of us at halftime," said Batiste. "We were able to come back after that.

"But that's when he (Hebert) broke out. We did a good job on him early, but that's when their numbers got tous." Port Allen scored on their first drive after halftime with a 17-yard run from Darrel Jones. But Northwest trimmed the margin to 20-14 with 2:13 to go in the third with a 23-yard TD pass from Leblanc to Lee Soileau. Early in the fourth, Northwest drove to the Pelican 22, only to fumble to Port Allen on fourth down. Leblanc finished 12-26-1 in passing for 216 yards.

Hebert has gained 553 yards on the ground against Northwest this season. The junior rolled up 258 yards rushing on 30 carries Friday to help the Pelicans knock off the Raiders 35-14 in a Class 3A, bi-district playoff game. Port Allen (7-4) advances to the regional round to play at Rayville (9-2) Friday. Northwest, which enjoyed the first District 4-3A title and playoff game in school hisory, ends the season with a 5-6 record. In the first game of the season, Hebert had 295 yards rushing in Port Allen's 35-6 trouncing of the Raiders.

In the first half of their playoff rematch, Hebert was held in check for 48 yards on 13 carries. But as the Pelican's beefy offensive line began to wear down the Raider defense, Hebert claimed his territory. Hebert broke open a shaky, 20-14 Port Allen lead with touchdown runs of 48 and 66 yards to put the game out of reach. Northwest head coach Milton Batiste said the Hebert and teammates were too quick and deep for 3 Raiders. game went like I expected," said Batiste.

"We dont have the numbers to play with them for a whole game. "Our kids played their hearts out. But we just did-n't have the size and the numbers." The numbers keep adding up for Hebert, who ended the season with 1,120 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns. He even reached those numbers after missing two games with an ankle injury. "He's been running hard for us all season," said Pelican head coach Gary Adkins.

"He was able to take advantage of what the Una gave him "1 just think we were the better team tonight. But you have-to give Northwest credit.
