I am again in receipt of thirty-five dollars which in addition to one hundred and twenty dollars received in June last makes in all one hundred and fifty-five dollars for an investment of eighteen dollars in less than one year by insuring in the Travelers Insurance Company, of Hartford, for accidents received while following my usual vocation and to all who have no means of support but by your daily labor the assurance that should you meet with an accident which perchance might disable you for two, four or six months, you are to je made whole pecuniarily, alone repays you for the money you expend in purchase of Policy, and relieves you of the humiliating thought that you are to be dependent upon friends for support or your employers for continuance of pay, while thus disabled, as Mechanics are often times in ench circumstances, as their employers feel it their duty to continue their pay while disabled. But while the Travel-ers'insurance Company of Hartford places every man's independence in his own hands the custom of em ployers paying their help full pay or half pay while disabled will be done away, and every man left on his own legs unless they see lit to pay for their own indemnity. Therefore let all be wise, as all are more or less exposed to danger, and go to J. Math ews A Son's office and insure in the Travelers of artford, and perhaps learn by experience as I have learned, that the pain of the injury is counterbalanced by the weekly compensation you are sure to get as Mathews is prompt in his payments as agent for the Travelers Iusnrance Company of Hartford, Ct E. Publisher of The Little Corpobai-Chicago, 111. Code for January. The best number of the best Lady's Magazine we have ever seen. It is really a gem. A piece of block printing is produc ed in this number, especially for the ladies, that is a novelty in this country.

It is the figure of a stag, printed in eight colors, and is exceedingly beautiful and we presume could not be purchased in the stores for double the price of the Book. The two steel plates are very fine, one of them contains three distinct pictures. The tinted cut a speciality of God- ey's is sweetly pretty and the inimitable fashion-plate is beyond all praise. But the great feature of this number is Godey's extension plate'of the latest fashions, two feet long, printed on both sides, mak- four feet a new thing. There is no magazine that can get up a fashion equal to Godey.

We know that they are true, for we know whe it is that gets them up. The reading matter is decidedly good. Marion Harlan d's story will prove to be her best. We have examined a copy of the completed work and feel bound to say that it is far superior both in style and material to the specimen shown. A finely engraved map of Akron, showing tho principal manfacturing establishments, churches Ac and colored to show the boundaries of the wards, is among the city maps. The paper and other material nsed in making the Atlas is of the very best quality; it is handsomly and substantially bound, and the lithographic work has been executed at the establishment of the Messrs. Dr. Baktges, without delay. Report Committee. To tli Honorable City Council of Akron: The undersigned, representing the Committee ap pointed by your Honorable body to examine and in- vestigate the system of extinguishing fires as now practiced in the city of Lockport, New York, beg leave to say, that they have made such Investigation, and personal examination, and embody the result In the annexed report Your Committee visited Lockport on the Uth of the present month, and through the kindness ef the officers of the "Holly Manufacturing Co." the whole system of water supply was shown us, Including a practical test, and exhibition of throwing water through hose. Before stating what was accomplished in the way ofthrowingwater.it may be proper to describe as concisely as possible, wherein their system diners from that ordinarily employed.

They use a stationary Rotary Pump, driven by a Turbine Water Wheel, forcing water through iron pipes laid four feet under ground, and extending throughout the principal streets of the city. At an alarm of fire how are attached to these pipes by means of Hydrants, placed sueh distances apart as may be deemed necessary ordinarily 500 or 600 feet apart The "Pump" is started immediately after an alarm is heard, and water can be thrown as soon as the hose are attached. The capacity of their Pump and Pipes is sufficient to throw ten streams at one time, which on a "pub lic dwplaij" has actually been done; ordinarily however, one stream is deemed sufficient, rarely, if ever, are more than two streams used. Some of the advantages of this system, are an in ereaatd efficiency, accomplished at a current expense far below lhat of "Steamers," or even "Hand Engines." The city of Lockport pay 8250 per annum, for the services of a man to run and take care of the Pump" and machinery connected with It. This is the only salary paid for personal service.

Another advantage in this system, (and it may be called the principal one) is, that the pipes may be said to be perfectly secure against "bursting," which, as the Council are aware, constitutes the chief objection to long lines of hose. And further in case of muddy roads, or deep snow, it Is nearly impossible to get a "Steamer" to a fire, unless indeed, it could be run over paved streets. There are many other commendable features in this system, which must be apparent to all who are interested enough in the matter to give it even a cursory examination. As to the performance on tke occasion of our visit we will state that two streams were thrown from one Hydrant the Hydrant selected, being the one-situated at one of the extreme ends of the pipe. As to the distance and amount of water thrown, It is simply necessary te say, that it was limited only by the strength of Vie pipes.

The hose was afterwards changed io the other ex treme of the city, taking water from a four inch pipe and with the same result as before. On this trial your Committee measured the distance thrown, and found it to be about one hundred and fifty feet, and through an inch and one-quarter "nozzle," with a pressure of ninety pounds per square inch, as indicated hy a pressure guage in the Pomp. And finally, a pressure of one hundred and sixty pounds per inch was maintained by a pump at the works of the "Holly Manufacturing Co." throwing from an inch nnd one-quarter nozzle. After this recital of what we saw, it is hardly necessary to say, that the system has our unqualified approval, and we most earnestly recommend it to the careful consideration of your Honorable body, and our citizens generally. If it is expected that wc should estimate the expense of this system, as applicable to the city of Akron, we must say that we cannot do it with any degree of accuracy for the reason that it would first be necessary to determine whether two pumps or one shonld be used, and whether one water wheel or two, or if Steam power might not be substituted for water.

It would also be neccessary to dcide how many feet and of what size pipe should be need. These questions, and more sqch, must be answered before an Intelligent answer can be given to the question of cost But to enable the Council to form some idea as to the expense, we will state, that we obtained from the builders of these Pumps, the following propositions: They will furnish two water wheels and two pumps for $8000, or one wkeel and one pump for J5000. Or will furnish one Rotary Engine and Boiler for 5SO00. We will add that the authors of this system prefer water power to steam, when it can be had in sufficient quantity and In good localities Something like a crude estimate of cost can be had by estimating cost of pipe at 33,56 per foot At that rate0ne mile of pipe would cost $13,200, if one wheel and one pump wore used, at a cost of $5000, and allowing $1600 far building a pump-house we have $19,200 total cost We do not wish to be understood as calling this anything like a close estimate, but to give ftomcthiivj of an idea of the expense. At Lockport a ten inch pipe ia used from the pump te the principal street from that point it decreases in size to 4 inches, which is considered large enough for the three streams.

And finally, if the Council are as favorably impressed with the system above described as your Committee have been, we take the liberty to suggest, (though perhaps not properly our place to do so) that snitable persons, (members of the Council, or others) be appointed to determine whether suitable water power can be had, or if steam should be used, and decide many other points which mutt be decided before the matter of expense can be even approximately known, as we did not understand that we were to do this. Hoping that we have performed the duty assigned us, in a manner sutisfactory to your Body, we respectfully submit the above report to your consid- J. H. COLLINS Ch'n Fire and Water Com. J.

But as the "rubbing puzzle" is defnonstrated, I wilj send you a "pushing puzzle" for the benefit of your young readers A Sea-captain having a crew of 30 men 15 whites, and 15 blacks running short of provisions concluded that he must throw overboard one half of his crew, bnt the crew could not agree" whether the whites or the blacks should be thrown over. They then agreed among themselves that the Captain should place them in a circle upon the deck, and then push overboard every ninth man in going round the circle. The Captain placed them in ench a position that all the blacks were pushed over and none of the whites, the Captain going round until he had 15 thrown overboard. Being brought before the Probate Court for re-examination his Honor did not deem the evidence sufficient to keep him in jail until the next term of the Court of Common Pleas and ordered his discharge. By a late Cincinnati Commercial we learn that the gentleman went from here directly to that city, put up at a first class hotel, deposited his "baggage," consisting of a few old rags, a quantity of waste paper and a couple of bricks, with the clerk of the hotel, and then com-meeced operations. Among other "confidential" operations was the ordering of a horse and buggy from a neighboring livery stable, and not returning according to agreement, the police were put npon his track, and the gentleman was brought up with a round turn, and a search of his person and hotel de posit revealing his true chnracter he was "sent np" for sixty days.
