Behind-the-scenes fighting over its production took a personal toll, the three-time Grammy winner said in the Nov. 14 issue of Rolling Stone magazine. "It's unfortunate in some ways that the record did so well, because I lost friends over it," said Crow, whose hit "All I Wanna Do" won record of the year in 1995. Some of the studio musicians griped about not getting enough credit for their work. Redford's happy to be liberal MINNEAPOLIS — Robert Redford showed up with politics on his mind but few illusions about movie stars being taken seriously. When he opened up the floor to questions at a fund-raiser for Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone Saturday night, one woman got up. "Are you married?" she asked. Redford shook his head and laughed. "What are you going to do about it if I'm not," he said slyly. Redford, an environmentalist who watches politics closely, denounced ads for Wellstone's Republican challenger, Rudy Boschwitz, that denounce the incumbent as "embarrassingly liberal." "If liberal means you're for child care, for education, for the environment, then I'm happy to be liberal," Redford said. These guys earn top honors NEW YORK — Michael Jordan, Jerry Seinfeld and Mel Gibson play different venues, but they're scoring kudos in the same arena. They made GQ's "Men of the Year" list, published in the November issue. "We catch ourselves humming his melodies on the subway, mentally replaying his fourth quarter, dreaming about the characters he's conjured with his pen," the magazine said by way of a composite introduction. Readers chose the winners in 11 categories, including sports, topped by Jordan. Seinfeld won for TV entertainment, Gibson for film. Pat Riley was voted most stylish, Jimmy Carter earned the spot for humanitar- ianishi and Bill Gates for business. From Wire Service Reports SEINFELD T ADVICE Reader wants to bench judge for her odd outburst Dear Ann Landers: I'd like to add to your collection of stories abput judges who should not be on the bench. I'm sending an Associated Press news story from the Sacramento Bee and hope you will print it. It's time Ohio got rid of this idiot. — Fuming in Sacramento Dear Fuming: Thanks for sending on the story. It was written by reporter Jacqui Podzius Cook. If you had not sent the clipping, I would have thought you made it up. "A judge's advice to a $. young woman in her courtroom has earned her the scorn of two national organizations that called her remarks sexist and insulting to both men and women. "'Men are easy,' Judge Shirley Strick- ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. land Saffold told Katie Nemeth before accepting her guilty plea. 'You can go wait in the bus stop, put on a short skirt, cross your legs and pick up 25. Ten of them will give you money.' She didn't stop there. '"If you don't pick up the first 10,' the judge said, 'then all you got to do is open your legs a little bit and cross them at the bottom, and then they'llstop." "Judge Saffold made the comments in fining 19-year-old Nemeth $200 for misusing a credit card. Nemeth had pleaded guilty. Her lawyer said Nemeth had worked in a store where a customer lost a credit card and Nemeth's boyfriend used it. He later repaid the owner. "According to a transcript of the hearing, the judge told Nemeth she should break up with her boyfriend because 'all the women in prisons across these United States of America are there because of a guy.' TV TONIGHT "Nemeth said she wasn't with the boyfriend anymore, so Judge Saffold suggested she go to a nearby medical school and 'marry a doctor lickety-split. All you got to do is take a biology book, don't even read it. When one of them walks by, say, "Excuse me, could you tell me what this means?" You got yourself a date.' "The 45-year-old judge, who was elected in 1994, is married to a doctor. Nemeth's lawyer was shocked by her words and said, 'I thought it was inappropriate for a judge to suggest to a woman defendant that the way to get ahead is to find a man — and to do that by exposing your sexuality as opposed to your mind.' "Judge Saffold said her remarks were taken out of context and denied urging Nemeth to marry or pick up a doctor even though it appears in the transcript. '"I was telling her her boyfriend's a bum,' she said 'I think she's a nice kid. I was telling her her choice was the wrong choice. She's a young kid with no prior record. She has a chance to be productive.' "The president of the Center for Women Policy Studies in Washington said Judge Saffold may have had the best of intentions but added, 'She should just say it straight out and not give her really appallingly bad and sexist advice.'" I second the motion. Dear Ann Landers: My cousin, "Fred," age 47, has been engaged to a lovely woman for 17 years. He is well-fixed and good-looking and has a beautiful home. What's your guess? — Bolivar, Mo. Dear Mo.: My guess is Cousin Fred would rather go with a woman than marry her and was lucky enough to have found a woman who doesn't mind the arrangement.
