Chicago Tribune prints the follow- ng editorial on the result of the Lorl- mer case: What It Means: a result ot the ole of forty-six members ot the United tales Donate William Lorimer remains that body, the officially credited but ubllcly discredited representative, of the tate of Illinois. Against this action were opposed tho otes of forty senators, numbering monir them men of the greatest weight oth In the senate and in tho nation. Tho list Bliould be studied. It Is slg- Iflcant. Mr.

Lorlmer's margin of safety was six otes In a Jury composed of ninety-one, his does not count Krazler and Terrell Salnst him. or Talluferro. who did not ote. but who is understood to have been pposed to Lorimer and whose vote 'ould have offset the vote of Aldrich, 'ho was absent. The vote thus cor- ected would have left him four.

This la the methematlcal measure of Is "vindication." The quality of the otes cast will moro than wipe It out the souse of the nation. If Mr. Lorimer proud of the event Is welcome to his pride. As he and Is supporters are practical men who like to mathematics In matters of honor, hey may now congratulate themselves pon the fr.ct that his vote may con- Inue to be cast In their Interest But though Mr. Lorimer remains In the enate, tho Issue he represents Is not djudlaatcd.

On the contrary, the refusal of a ma- orlty ot the United States senate to ote the election of William Lorimer void resents to the, people of this nation ono the gravest Issues which have arisen their political history. Ono ot the greatest lawyers of the country, one who as established an International fame or statesmanship, a conservative of the onservatlves, solmenly warned the sena- ors that -It they "would preserve the government of our fathers;" If they would preserve the honor and Integrity tho senate; If they would do their full uty to their country under their oaths, hey were "not at liberty to reject tho ostimony In this caso, which shows this eat to be filled hero as tha result of icrruptlon." Yot forty-jlx senators have rejected it, and this decision of tho highest dellbera- Ive body In tho lend strikes straight at he heart of our'republican government. Without the purity of the ballot and he honesty of elections, this republic an not live. That has been the Issue from the beginning ot the Lorimer case, and in the nadow of such an Issue tho personality of Larimer and the question whether auoh a man sits In the senate as an-accredited representative of the great commonwealth of Illinois, or whether he does not, Is of little Importance. One more predatory politician rewarded with ilgh -office, one more vote which Is oast ai Senator Aldrich casts his.

regardless of any other one more stalwart" henchman of tho great pow- irg that rule us--this matters Infinitely ess than that the people should understand. In the light of tho Lorimer case, what the cltliens of the United States must ask themselves Is this: What are forces which have decreed that the sale of the highest legislative office In the gift of the people shall go unrebuked and triumphant at the bar of the United States senate? What aro tho considerations wMch nave moved a majority of this august md supposedly all-powerful body to defy the evidence of fact, and the common dictates of reason, and the rudimentary principles of political morality for the sake of tho service of one man? How Is it that In the chamber which nasikechoed the voices of our greatest statesmen the brazen sophistry and conscienceless buncomb of a Bailey outweighs the luminous arguments and the solemn warning of one of the greatest lawyers and ablest statesmen of his generation--Ellhu Root? How la it that the pitiful evasion aelf-contradltlons, the self-stultifying and open partialities of a Burrows, a Paynter. a Gamble, can defeat tho searching logic and eloquent public spirit of senators like Beveridge, Burton La Follette, Cummins. Borah, Frazler Crawford? These are the questions which the American people must ask themselves, as William Lorimer settles down in his unclean seat by the w.lll- of a majority of United States senate. These are the questions that must bo answered and the fact which is their answer musi be met and destroyed If government ol the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the "earth.

The answer Is clear. The people wll know how to translate It from the names of these forty-six senators who have turned their backs upon the proofs of corruption and complacently welcomed its beneficiary to the counsels of the nation. And the people will no longer doubt that the capital charge made by patriotic public men against the senate Is tho unexaggerated truth. They will now understand that In tho hlgest delib eratlve body of the nation a majority are subject not merely to tho Influence but to the absolute control of the concentrated power of the great "interests. 1 They will understand that In the highest legislative body In the nation riu- tocracy rules, rules without conscience ruUs without remorse In defiance ot tho senate's honor, In defiance of the safety of a government whose very existence depends upon the purity of elections The air has been filled ot late with protests against the "persecution" capital.

The regulation In the public Interest of the huge corporations bull up In the last quarter century has been challenged as usurpation ot governmen over private right. Threats of the ruin of business and financial disaster, crlc. of "let us alone" have mnde the welkin ring. Patriotic men who have polnte out the dangers that have i through unscrupulous financial have been held up as demagogues. Th press has been excoriated for treason tc prosperity, for Irresponsible sensational Ism, for rousing class prejudice am tompilng mo'o radicalism.

The senate verdict on Lorlmer's elec tlon Is an answer to all that. By or der of tho that rule. Aldrich Halley, Penrose, ftulkley. Hale, Ualllnger rWllnKham. Denew.
