Arnsparger was responding to an old rumor, revived again over the weekend; on national television. "The rumor started about two years ago, when I first got to LSU. But I am.

happy here at LSU and enjoy what I'm doing." Junior James Massey, who was expected to provide relief for starting tailback Neal Anderson, will be red-shirted and battle for that starting spot next season when Anderson graduates. Massey is still having problems with the wrist he broke in the spring and also has bruised ribs. Despite all the criticism he has received after replac. ing a legend, Alabama's Ray Perkins has won more of his first 27 games than Bear Bryant did in his first 27. Perkins is 17-10.

Bryant was 16-7-4. Last season Bell ranked fourth, trailing Doug Flutie, Robbie Bosco and Bernie Kosar. He completed 98 of 184 passes (53 percent) for 1,614 yards, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. After three games this season, he has completed 54 of 79 passes (68 percent) for 806 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception. Although some people have complained about Florida's home schedule this season, next year will be a different story.

Next season in Gainesville, the Gators play Miami, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Temple and Tulsa. Iowa (3-0) received 35 of 59 first-place votes and 1,111 of a possible 1,180 points from a nationwide panel of sports writers and broadcasters. Oklahoma, which played its first game of the season Saturday, received 13 first-place votes and 1,046 points.

Auburn plummeted from first place to 14th. Florida State remained fourth. Florida was ranked 11th. OHIO STATE CAST OFF. All-America tailback Keith Byars had the cast taken off his broken right foot, but a spokesman said it was doubtful Byars would play in the Buckeyes' next game, Saturday at Illinois.

Starter Tony Lanham completed 6 of 10 passes for 73 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. "We've got two very good quarterbacks, who can run our offense and we can win with," UCF Coach Gene McDowell said. "I'm trying to give both quarterbacks enough playing time, so that if either one gets hurt, we will have confidence that we can win with the other.

"Tony Lanham is still our starting quarterback. I plan to play Darin each game, but Tony will continue to play most of the game." ence), idle last weekend, will face conference power Delaware State (4-1, 2-0) Saturday. "We won't beat Delaware State playing the way we have been," Little said. "We've got to improve." Little said he is extremely concerned with B-CC's point production. In their last two games, the Division I-AA Wildcats have scored only 37 points playing against a winless Division I-AA team and a Division II team.

"There were a lot of great efforts out there," Shula said of the Dolphins' 30-26 victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday. "We made the big plays out there offensively and there was continual hustle on defense." Shula also said he was pleased with the Dolphins' ability to battle the elements: numbing 29-de-gree cold and 73,614 rabid Denver fans. "This was a win that will help us later on," Shula said at his weekly news conference. The victory increased the Dolphins' record to 3-1 and kept them in a first-place tie with the New York Jets in the American Conference's Eastern Division.

The Broncos (2-2) fell one game behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC's Western Division. It was only the Broncos' second loss in their last 16 home games. Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino passed for 390 yards and three touchdowns and outshined his counterpart John Elway in the much-publicized duel. Marino connected on 25 of 43 passes, including scoring passes of 69 yards to Nat Moore, 24 yards to Joe Rose and 46 yards to Vince Heflin. The touchdown pass to Heflin gave the Dolphins a 27-23 lead in the third quarter, and they never trailed thereafter.

Elway, meanwhile, completed 18 of 37 passes for 250 yards with one interception and no touchdowns. "Marino answered the call every time we needed him," Shula said. "I think he's got that killer instinct back that he had all last year." Marino's sterling performance was achieved largely without the help of his two favorite receivers Mark Duper, who is out with a foot injury, and Mark Clayton, who sustained a sprained ankle early in the third quarter. Running back Tony Nathan, with 10 catches for 120 yards, and veteran receiver Nat Moore, with five catches for 109 yards, picked up the slack without the Dolphins' offense missing a beat. However, Shula said the Dolphins still need work on their running game.

They gained only 53 yards on 22 carries against the Broncos. "The running game is still a major disaster," Shula said. The Dolphins sustained an assortment of bumps and bruises but no serious injuries against the Broncos, Shula said. Clayton's ankle injury is not believed to be serious and he should be ready for Sunday's contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Orange Bowl, Shula said. Lyle Blackwood with a hip injury, Nat Moore who hurt his ankle, knee, and hamstring, also should be ready by Sunday, Shula said.

"Now, knowing going into the game that he Herrmann is it, that he's the quarterback, I think it will make a great deal of difference," Coryell said. "But we are going to have to gather together. We are going to have to play better in all phases of the game." LOS ANGELES RAIDERS DEAL.

Holdout linebacker Jerry Robinson has been acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a high draft choice. Robinson, 29, will report immediately. GREEN BAY PACKERS CLOUDY. The status of quarterback Lynn Dickey remained clouded despite his impressive performance in Sunday's loss to St. Louis.

Dickey, unhappy with the way he has played this season, asked to be sidelined as a starter last week. But Dickey replaced starter Randy Wright in the third quarter with the Packers trailing, 26-0. He threw for three touchdown passes but the Cardinals won, 43-28. Packers Coach Forrest Gregg refused to speculate whether the Packers would have won if Dickey had started. Bennett: Young sits until it's over Tampa Bay Bucs Coach Lee-man Bennett says he isn't panicking but admitted "it is time to win one." The Bucs dropped to 0-4 after losing to the Detroit Lions, 30-9.

Bennett said quarterback Steve Young could see action later in the season if the Bucs are out of playoff contention. Bennett said that Tampa Bay's inability to make the big play on offense and defense has contributed to the losing streak. The Bucs blew several scoring opportunities, and helped the Lions with three turnovers. "We're down but we feel we're better than 0-4," said Bennett, who never lost four consecutive games as coach of the Atlanta Falcons. "But that's what we are." The Bucs run into the Chicago Bears at Tampa Stadium on Sunday.

"They're the best team going right now," Bennett said. Bucs linebacker Jeff Davis, who injured his shoulder against the Lions, is listed as questionable. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS NO LISTING.
