Allison is leaving DiGard racing team "Bobby Allison, who has won 81 NASCAR races and earned more than $5 million in his career, is leaving the DiGard Racing team with iyz years left on his contract, DiGard officials said Tuesday. Bill Gardner, chairman of the board of DiGard Racing, said that Allison, 47, and his son, Davey, agreed to complete the 1985 short-track program, which DiGard had subcontracted to them. Gardner said the Miller Brewing Company, which has been DiGard's sponsor since 1983, recognized the team had the right to terminate Allison and put a substitute driver in his place.

But he said Allison initiated the discussions that led to the settlement. Reports surfaced recently that Allison and Gary Nelson, vice president of operations for DiGard, had a running dispute over chassis setups on Allison's Buick. Gardner said those disputes came to a head after the Firecracker 400 in Day-tona Beach two weeks ago. MARATHONS BREAKING TRADITION. Faced with a proliferation of prize-money marathons that drew top runners away from the Boston Marathon, the Boston Athletic Association governors voted late Monday night to break an 89-year tradition and offer prizes.

Nine of the 1 1 governors attended the meeting. The vote wasn't unanimous but was overwhelmingly in favor of the move, said race administrator Guy Morse. Boston Mayor Raymond L. Flynn said the vote was "a major step forward in the effort to maintain the world-class stature of the Boston Marathon." Exact prize-money figures have not been determined.
