Woolen Soiks for the Soldiers. Let every lady, old and young, who desires to do something for the comfort of those who have man. fully gone forth to fight the battles of onr country to preserve, in fact, a country for as to live in read the proposition of Mr, Bates in another column of to-day's paper. There ie not a family in the county and in very many families not a single member but what can furnish a good pair of Woolen Socks, as suggested by Mr. without feeling it.

those who have them already prepared for family use, send in their quota immediately, and let others lose no Unjoin complying with the requisition which has thus been made upon their benevolence and patriotism. Sharp-Shooters Attention We notice, by a poster issued from this oflice.that Target Shooting Prize King has been added to the attractions of the County Fair, to come off on Wednesday, the third day of the Fair. This, especially at the present time, is a nommendable feature, as the exigencies of the times require tbat our people should become more familiar with the use Of Fire-arms. Entrance fee for a target only fifty cents. Let everybody take a shot.

Death of Col. Andrews Col. Loriu Andrews, late President of Eenyon College, died at Gambler on the 18th Inst. Col. A.

wsb well known throughout the State as an ardent and energetic friend of Eduoation. He was one of the very first to tender his services to the Govern, merit, and as Captain the first, we believe, to report his comman.l at Camp Jackson, in Columbus. He was soon after commissioned by Gov. Dennison, as Col. of the 4th Regiment, at the head of which he went into the field in WeBtern Virginia.

He was there prostrated by the disease which terminated bis life, and transferred from the scene of war to his quiet home, upon a bed, where in spite of eminent meuieal skill, kind care and a naturally vigorous constitution, the patriot and the soldier quietly yielded up his life, leaving a young family, the friends of eduoation throughout the State, and a bleeding country to mourn his early death. Again we say, have you tried D. B. De Land Co. 'a Chemical Saleratus? If not, get a paper at once and he astonished at its happy results.

It is for sale by all reliable wholesale and retail dealers the country. Harness Work. At the Richfield Fair wo noticed some splendid work in this line, which was manufactured by Rich field mechanics. A very fine set of double Carriage Harness, beautifully stitched and ornamented, and other well made saddle and harness work was ex hibited by Mr. P.

L. Allen, and a superb sett of Farm Harness and some superior saddles were en tered by Mr. George Dustln. Farmers and others In that pait of the county cannot do better than to purchase their harness work in Richfield, Sale of Real Estate. The old Exchange property, corner of Market and Main Streets, was sold at Sheriffs sale an Monday last.

Mr. J. B. Wood was the purchaser at $3,000. It is the intention of Mr.

we nnder land, to improve the property by the erection of a substantial block of buildings at an early day, Burglars and Robbers Routed Onr efficient Police Detective, Mr. James Bnrli- Iison, and his brother, Mr, Burllson, of Cleve land, having been upon the track for several months made a descent on Wednesday last, upon the den of gang of thieves and burglara, who have been com. mining their depredations for several years in Medina and Lorain counties. One member of the gang, Horace Holt, of Graf ton, was arrested and lodged in Medina Jail Upon searching Holt's house, a quantity of Factory cloth which had been stolen last wintor from Liverpool, in Medina County, was found. A small portion of a quantity of silver ornaments, valued at $150, which had been stolen from the Catholic Church, in Liverpool, and which had been melted down, were al so found by these indefatigable officers, and such a clue has been obtained as will undoubtedly lead to the arrest of several other prominent members of the gang, and rid the community of the nest of des peradoes by which they have been so long annoyed.

Richfield Boys In the Field. We received last week, toe lato for publication, letter from Dr. G. W. Dickinson, late Fife Major of the 19th Regiment, stating that Emmon Ovlatt, John Thompson, Levi Carr, and Horace Gold wood, members of the Richfield Cornet Band, bad enlisted as musicians in the Wade Hutching' Cav.

Richfield Fair. Like all the annaal exhibitions of the "Union Ag ricultural and Mechanic Art Society," the Fair of 1SG1 was decidedly successful. In fact the entries in almost every department, as well as the receipts, were greater than those of any previous Fair since the organization of the Society. The weather was delightful aud the utmost har mony and order prevailed. We publish elsewhere the list of premiums which were awarded upon the great variety of articles and objects which passed in review before us, and it will of course he impos sible for us to enter into anything like detail in our remarks at this time.

Wo were unable to be present upon the first day (Wednesday,) but learn that in addition to the fine exhibition of stock, vegetables, fruits and mechani cal products, the chief attraction of the day was the military drill, in which the Richfield Greys, Captain Gold wood, the Bath Guards, Capt. Schoon- over, and the Granger Guards, Capt. Chanibcrlin, competed for the splendid prizes which had been offered. The regular committee not being present, committee pro tern, was constituted upon the grounds, who, after a full display of the skill and proficiency of the respective companies, awarded the several premiums as follows: Richfield Greys, $25; Bath Guards, $15; Granger Guards, $10, Upon Thursday, the Beoond day, we arrived upon the gronnd about 9 o'clock, and were very agreeably surprised and disappointed at the magnitude of the Every portion of the Society's exten sive hall was filled to repletion with the products of the farm, the garden, the orchard, the drawing room, the kitchen, the dairy and the workshop. The meeting was called for tho purpose of listening to speeches npon the exigencies of the times, and to give the citizens a chance to show their patriotism enlisting in the army. Maj. A. C. Voris was first called to the stand and made a pertinent speech.

Hudson, Sept. 23. The following account of the niege of Lexington is famished -to the St. Louis Republican, by Henry bradburn, one of Col. Mulligan's soldiers, who left Lexington Saturday morning.

The Fort was surrendered on Friday, after the men had fought for fifty-nine hours without water, and had only three barrels of vinegar to quench their thirst daring all that time. There were no springs or wells of water in the camp ground, as has been stated, the supply was from the river, and was cut off after a desperate fight on Wednesday. The camp gronnd consisted of about ten acres, and was located a short distanoe from the river. There were breastworks entirely around it, with the exception of the portion next the river. It was here the hardest fighting took place.

The rebels procured a large number of hemp bales, rolled them in advance, and under their cover gradually succeeded in acquiring a position in the rear. They out off the supply of water, and had the fort completely surrounded. They made but few charges upon the breastworks during the entire Biege. Their object seemed to be to surround the fort and cut off the supply of water, and having succeeded in this they awaited until Col. Mulligan was compelled to yield to a toe more terrible than the rebels who surrounded him.

Previous to his surrender, he offered to take a position on a level spot of ground, and give Gen. Prioe the odds of four to one in a fair and open fight, but no attention was paid to it. After the surrender, the rebels mounted the breastworks and seemed mad with joy. As soon as the surrender took plaoe, a par. ty took down the Federal Sag and trailed it in the dust.

An immense amount of gold, supposed to be about a quarter of a million, fell into the possession of the rebels. It was taken from the banks and buried by Col. Mulligan on the camp ground some time ago. The rebels speedily unearthed it. Col.

Mulligan wept like a child when he found himself compelled to surrender. The morning after the surrender the men were all released on parole and ferried across the riv er. The officers were retained. The loss of the rebels is not known, but it is thought to be not less than one thousand killed and wounded. Their first attack proved more disastrous to them than the long Biege which followed.

For a day or two previous to the last attack they were engaged in buring their dead. Rattlesnakes n. Rebels. A Westera Virginia paper perpetrates the following "Tho best piece of satire upon the leniency observed by the authorities in reference to rebels round committing depredations is in the shape of a story which is told, we believe, by Governor Peirpont. As tho story goes, some of the soldiers in General Cox's camp, down in Kanawha, recently caught a large rattlesnake.

The snake manifested a most mischievous disposition, snapping and thrusting out its forked tongue at all who came near it. The boys at last got tired of the reptile, and as nobody wanted such a dangerous companion, the question arose, what shall we do with him This question was propounded several times, without an answer, when a half drunken soldier, who was lying near upon his back, rolled upon his side, and releived his companions by quietly remarking it.swear him and let him go!" Can't get Rid of the Feeling. The seceding States in spite of all their eltorts, can't get rid of the feeling that they are still in the Government. They have manufactured a few phrases suitahle to a different arrangement but the spirit of all they Bay or do is flavored with the old regime. For instanoe only the other day Governor Harris, of Tennessee, in the Confederacy, sent a requitition to Kentucky, in the Union, for an escaped thief, just as though the old order of things existed.

He evidently acted under the impression that the Confederacy was a sham, and whatever real work he wanted done he bad to get it io the old way, Isn't ibis a opufrskii.n tbat the Unio r.ug'it to be rtatored Doo'l the rebvU admit by it that they dou't know what to do witb their "confederate" elephant 1hd Journal. 11,064,591.106,48 IS in a lae 7 It as oi 1,903,7525,907,271 1.885.79j 117,969,45 WILSON. Treasurer's Office, Bummit County, Ohio, Bopt After the three oompanies, above spoken of, had 1 concluded their exercises, a juvenile company from Bedford, styled the "Coles' Tiger Zouaves," some twenty-five in number, and ranging from ten to fif teen years of age, nnder command of Capt. Wil liam E. Way, went through with the beautiful and complicated Zonave Drill with the utmost precision, the delight of all who witnessed it. The boys would undoubtedly have carried off the prize, had their number entitled them to compete therefor.and it was, a purse of about $20, was made up for them by the spectators. On the third day, particular attention was given the exhibition of fine horses, trial of speed, tfce.

for the results of which see the list of premiums awarded. During the forenoon, the Granger and Peninsula Cornet Bands, both of which did good service du. ring the entire Fair, took the ring for their respective premiums. Though the performances of each were remarkably good, the first premium of 80, was awarded by the committee to the Granger boys, while the Peninsula boyB came in on the double of course. It was not so much superiority of skill and talent as of praotioe, we presume, that won the prize, and as "perseverance and sweet oi!" will accomplish, wonders.we have no doubt tbat our 'down the river friends will he adequate for the beat of them by another season, The noon hour was devoted to Ladies' Equestrian ism Miss Olive Hatch, of Granger, Miss Olive Keyes, of Hinckley, Miss Mary Jane Tlernan, of Granger, and Miss Mary Gilciist of Koyalton.oom- petlnir.

They all rode very gracefully, and had their horses all been equally well broken and easily managed, the committee would have had a difficult task to determine their respective merit, une re sult of their deliberations will be found in the list of premiums, Class V. The afternoon was occupied by exhibition of premium stock, trial of speed npoo the ring, military exercises by the Richiield Greys and "Tigers," music by the Bands, and reading of the list of premiums by the Secretary, at the conclusion of which the large concourse slowly and quietly separated for their respective homes, each and all satisfied that a paying investment of time and meney had been entered into.
