m. The Marionettes. aTiH Alma Babb Becomes Soloist For New WTAM Program By DOROTHY DORAN Beacon Journal Radio Editor A BROADCAST from a Jefferson day dinner at Washington, D. April 13, will bring six democratic leaders to the air in a two-hour program, starting at 10 p. m.

Addresses are scheduled by Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York, Governor Albert C. Ritchie of Maryland, Governor Harry F. Byrd of Virginia, Senator J. Hamilton Lewis of Illinois and James A.

Reed, former senator from Missouri. James M. Cox will be toast-master. Transmission will be over NBC-WEAF. Mrs.

Ely Culbertson is going to join her husband in some of his network broadcasts when he starts a commercial series next week on the Red network. He is to be the featured attraction with Mrs. Cul-bertson assisting at times. Another Akron singer Joins the ranks of WTAM entertainers with the announcement that Alma Babb, soprano heard in concert and opera here is to appear as soloist on a commercial series at the Cleveland studios, beginning next Sunday at 4 p. m.

She will be heard on this weekly program together with Hazel Mc-Ginley, contralto, another Akron singer. Mrs. Babb is well known in local music circles. In addition a male quartet will be heard on this series. Listeners will want to remember that Grace Moore sings tonight at 9 via WTAM in the first of the series that will bring her to fans for 1 broadcasts.

Sophie Tucker She is being spotted In place of the late John Philip Sousa. David Men-doza's orchestra will provide the accompaniment. Search for an announcer to preside at the WHK microphone for the Cleveland Indians' home games this season has ended with the announcement that Ellis C. Van iter Pyl of WiUoughby, has been chosen. Van der Pyl is a Yale graduate and once went to Europe as a runner with an Olympic team.

Whiteman's newest "find" to be heard Friday night during his 10 o'clock program Is Shirley Brown, 17-year-old Brooklyn girl, who was chosen from 450 contestants. She claims to have lost her Job in a department store three days before winning the audition. Miss Brown was graduated last June from high school. Frank J. Novak, band leader and instrumentalist, will start a series of weekly programs on the Blue network next Monday at 9:30 p.

m. He will direct an ensemble of five including himself. The program will be known as "Four Boys and a Girl," the girl being the vocalist. More statesmen are to be heard In an Army day broadcast April 6, speaking over NBC-WEAF net. Secretary of War Patrick J.

Hurley and Senator Simeon D. Fess will speak from the Mayflower hotel in Washington. The time is 10:30 p. m. When WTAM staff members go out to Chardon Saturday to broadcast a program from the Geauga county maple festival, they will transmit the program over NBC-WEAF net at 1 p.

m. The Chardon Rube band will play barn dance music. Jessica Dragonette, recently returned from a vacation, spent some time In Bermuda recuperating from a serious attack of laryngitis. Miss Dragonette is one of the better sopranos on the air and is a veteran in point of service on the networks. Opera lovers will hear the broadcast of the last two acts of Verdi's "Alda" Saturday afternoon during the metropolitan program.

Francesco Merli, a new tenor, will be heard in addition to Elizabeth Rethberg, soprano, and Carmcla Ponselle, sister of Rosa. Some scattered notes about favorites include the following items: Morton Downey is of Irish parentage; the Mills brothers use no musical instrument except a guitar; Julia Sanderson and Frank Crumit are married; Kate Smith weighs 211 pounds; Ben Bernle's full name is Benjamin Bernard Ancel; there are four Lombardo brothers in Guy's orchestra and Little Jack Little is five feet, four inches tall. Ben Sllverberg brings his ensemble back to WTAM for program beginning next Sunday at 6:30 p. m. His music Is familiar to radio fans, especially as a former morning feature.

A new sustaining feature at WLW is to bring 75 radio entertainers to listeners, starting April 5, and continuing every Tuesday night at 10.
