Wilder returns to make 'em laugh WESTPORT, Conn. — Gene Wilder will appear in three one-act comedies this summer at the Westport Country Playhouse. The one-act plays are part of a show called "Don't Make Me Laugh," which wiU run June 27 to July 14. The plays focus on love and niarriage. Wilder first appeared at the playhouse in the 1960s with Walter Pidgeon and Helen Hayes. "I always wanted to come back, and now I'm doing it," the 65-year-old actor said. "It looks pretty much the same, but I think the upholstery is different." Wilder's films include "Blazing Saddles" and "Yoimg Frankenstein." He said his next project is a film with Whoopi Goldberg called "Cheek to Cheek." Freddie catches cortisone shot NEW YORK — Freddie Prinze Jr. suffers for his art. After four nights of throwing baseballs during the filming of the upcoming "Summer Catch," the 25-year-old actor wound up with an extremely sore arm and a visit to the physical therapist. "He gave me a cortisone shot, which is the most painful shot in the world," he teUs Teen People in its June/July issue. "It's like injecting Vaselipe; it just does not want to come out of that needle at all." Prinze plays a troubled minor league pitcher who is saved by love of the game and love of a rich girl. "Summer Catch" is due in theaters in Aug. 24. Systems of law go global AUSTIN, Texas — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer said a growing conversation among nations about law and legal institutions is breaking down barriers between countries. "A global legal revolution is now in play that sends increasing demand for more uniform law, for greater protection of basic liberties, for modification of existing judicial institutions," said Breyer, at the Swift Symposium at the University of Texas at Austin law school Thursday BREYER Winning coaches shouldn't have to take cold showers Dear Ann Landers: I agree with you that pushing the wedding cake into the face of the bride or groom is no way for a couple to begin married life. I was married in 1945 and had a loving relationship with my wife for the 53 years we were married. There is another activity I find just as disgusting and rude. I am referring to the custom of athletes, football players in particular, who pour gallons of ice-cold liquid over the head of their coach after winning a game. The coach always takes it in good humor, but what * choice does he have? This type of "celebration" is childish and disrespectful. I remember when win'. ning team members would hoist their coach on their shoulders and carry him ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. off the field in triumph. That showed real appreciation on the part of the team and was an appropriate way to honor him. I suspect both the liquid-over-the-head and the cake-in-the-face "customs" came about because someone did it once and got a laugh. Others thought it was funny and perpetuated the atrocity But practical jokes cease to be funny after a while. It's time to end these juvenile practices. — Ben in Campbell, Calif. Dear Ben: I've been waiting a long time for someone to express your point of view because I, too, have long felt that this custom is appalling. Let's return to putting the coach on his team's shoulders and giving him the hero's treatment he deserVes. Dear Ann Landers: I read the letter from "Baton Rouge, La.," whose fiance expected her to baby-sit for his troubled 8-year-old niece. Thank you for telling her to try to be a good influence in this girl's life. Since she was concerned about having so little experience with kids, I would like to give her some pointers on how to befriend this young girl. 1. Try a "girls' day out" to the mall, including lunch. You don't have to buy anything. Just window shop and browse. Let the girl pick the restaurant. 2. Rent a couple of movies. Allow the girl to select the films, provided they are rated appropriately Buy a box of microwave popcorn. Sit together on the sofa, and enjoy each other's company 3. Bake cookies from scratch. Don't scold her if she makes a mess. Consider it part of the fun, and make the cleaning up enjoyable. 4. Go to an amusement park. Rediscover how thrilling it is to ride a roller coaster or a ferris wheel. 5. Buy paper dolls and spend a couple of hours playing. Have a tea party. Try to remember how much you loved doing these things when you were that age. 6. Select a good book, and snuggle up with her while you take turns reading aloud to each other. Above all, greet the child warmly and seem happy to see her. You will be surprised how much you will look forward to her visits after a while. No matter how she misbehaves, let her know you still care about her Always stay positive. I am not a psychologist, but I am a mother who always had a houseful of children. I have discovered that the "difficult" ones are those who need an extra dollop of attention and affection. "Baton Rouge" can make a huge difference in thi" girl's life. Please encourage her to go that extra mile. — Sandy in West Virginia Dear Sandy: Thanks for those excellent suggestions. Children who are anti-social and "not pleasant to be with" do indeed need extra dollops of attention and affection. Thanks for your counsel. Write to Ann Landers at P.O. Box 11562, Chicago, IL 60611.
