m. THE question of high-powered radio stations booming with 50,000 watts through cleared channels, was placed squarely in the -laps of the radio commissioners yesterday. With some 24 application from stations now enjoying good power asking the maximum, the commission circled the question a month ago during a series of hearings and placed the answer in the. hand? of. Ellis Yost, official examiner.

Completing his Yost turned the question back to the official agency after deleting the names of but four of the two dozen applicants. Those who won his frowns were WW Detroit; WREC, Memphis; WPCL, Chicago, and WTMJ, Mil-. waukee. The bow, if it is made, will be to the rural and small town listener. These communities, without local stations, get only fair reception during the greatest portion of the year. Higher power, unquestionably, will bring them clearer and stronger signals, Few indeed are the listeners who will object to the addition of the super-power stations. Nor is this 1 column inclined to fight the ques-' tion. Danger Is There 'But it does strike us that there is one point the commission should consider before making the move-that of permitting all of them to make any chain affiliations they desire.

Should all of the proposed new big boys attain their desires, added to those already on the air, it would mean that when certain commercials were on the air, the listener would have small choice in entertainment unless he wanted to hear that certain group of two or three programs. It represents too easy a method of "blanketing" to be permitted to go unchallenged. Particularly if the "public service" clause of the radio license means anythnig. WGAR, which combined the 11- censes of WFJC, Akron, and WCSO, Springfield, and moved the two stations to Cleveland to operate them under the new call letters, burst onto the air last night. Time had been set for 6 o'clock, but this corner arrived home a bit late and at 6:15 was able to tune In only the merry tea kettle of the various brethren on the 1450 kilocycle band.

At 7 p. after hearing a faint peep and the call letters, we gave it up until later. And at 10 p. m. we abandoned it definitely for the evening.

Net result of listening to WGAR: No hits, no runs. However, you will find that the Buffalo station, WKBW and WHK enjoy much clearer signals In this district. Louella Houser Yackie, a WFJC entertainer and heard on the station's final program Sunday, writes her impressions of the last day and we offer it herewith as the eulogy for the deceased broadcaster: "The afternoon of Dec. 14, may go down unrenowned through his-torv. Be that as it may.

It was the last day that I spent at the studio of WFJC. "An air of sadness prevailed, this beine the last day on the air for WFJC. Most of the entertainers ar rived fifteen or more minutes be fore the time of their performance. Most of us went on duty with heavy hearts. It seemed as though everybody lingered in the waiting and reception room to bid a last farewell to friends.

Even Miss Burkhardt us-. ually so at ease in all circumstances, was touched as she bade farewell to friends acquired through her radio experience. Each newcomer entered with a brave smile, which eventually faded away. Tears came 'to the eyes of some, as memories of past appearances were recalled. "Miss Burkhardt striving to put on a cheerful attitude.

Too much cannot be said in appreciation of the splendid work done by Lila Burkhardt in her duties as program director. She has been handicapped scores of times, yet always she has done the best thing possible under the circumstances. "Being a capable musician herself, she has always given the musician a fair chance.
