THE SAUNA JOURNAL SPORTS SUNDAY, MAY 6, 2001 C7 TON THE OUTSIDE RECREATION CALENDAR TOMMIE BERGER fis)>eries biologist, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Outdoor activities in full S3Adng Here we are already one-third of the way through the year. It seems like yesterday that we were worrying about Y2K and things like that. Is time flying by for everyone else like it is for ' me? I guess I'm having too much fun. Turkey season continues well into the month of May tliis year and I keep getting mixed reports. I weighed and measured several nice turkeys at the first of the season and have heard of a/ew being taken since. But mostly what I hear is that the hunting has been tough, especially in the eastern party of the state. I went out actually hunting for the first time late last week and called four jakes to within 15 yards — they came off of the adjoining property, across a road, and right in gobbling all the way I passed at the time and took my wife back to the property that evening to try to get her a bird. After more than an hour of playing cat and mouse — trying to get close enough to feel comfortable calling— we sat down and called in a mature gobbler. We wiU have turkey for Thanksgiving.' 'Ehe four jakes gobbled their heads off the whole time as did th,e mature bird. Everyone has been seeing quite a few jakes and they should remain fairly easy to call, I am headed back to Jackson "County to hunt with a couple of buddies, but they are not very optimistic. They have hunted numerous times with absolutely no luck at all. They say that the toms are still bimched up, not gobbling or responding to calls, not doing much of anything yet. I am hoping the warm weather this past week will have turned them on by the time 1 get there or maybe my "expert" calling abilities will get them fired up. Ha Ha! We wiU be hunting on a friends property where we deer hunt. The last couple of years we have practically had to shoo the turkeys out of the way in December and January to be able to hunt deer. Lots of turkey hunters tend to panic right now, but the season runs through May 20, still plenty of time to harvest a bird. I have always had very good success calling in adiUt birds late in the season — usually the hens are setting on the nests and the gobblers are wondering far and wide looking for a hen. Often late the adult gobblers will start to bunch together in bachelor flocks and will respond as a group. Last year on the last day of season I harvested a very nice bird who happened to be the first of four big toms that came to a call from well over Vi-mile away I found some morel mushrooms last week after the big rain. Also, I caught some white bass in the river above Wilson — the fish are biting!! I took Fritz to a couple of our ponds and caught some nice bluegiU, too. The crappie are starting to move up on the banks to spawn, the bass fishing is awesome in ponds and watershed lakes and the catfish are biting all over. So, get out the fishing equipment and make a mad dash to the fishing hole. May is the month when the wipers start to really bite well, when the stripers are shallow on the wind-blown points, when the crappie are spawning right on the bank, and when the walleye start moving up on the g^ts. It is when the black bass really start to chase lures aggressively, when the water warms up enough for the bluegill and catfish to really get geared up, and the white bass show up in the main lake areas. May is probably just about the best all-round fishing month for all species. It won't be long until school is out and the kids wiU be ready to get outside. I have seen a few brave jet skiers and sailboard- ers on the water and it won t be long vmtil water skiing will be comfortable. The water on our reservoirs now is in the low 60s — on those 80-degree days my son thinks it's plenty warm for a quick swim. He thoroughly enjoys wade fishing; 1 often wonder if he isn't part fish. May is the month when outdoor activities kick into full swing. Just get out and try to enjoy the freshness of spring. (terns for the Recreatton Calendar will not be taken over the telephone and must be either mailed (333 S. 4lh, Sallna, Kan. 67410) or laxed (827-6060).
