Allies Meet Stiff Fight 'in Drive Across Po Valley By ELEANOR PACKARD ROME. Oct. 5. (UP.)—American and British troops of the Fifth Army battled through mud-filled roads and fields in the hilla before the Po valley today, driving two salients within 14 miles of Bologna at the gateway to Italy's northern plains. A communique said the Germans were putting up stiff resistance as they fell back across the Apennines before the hard-driving Allied troops, now virtually within artillery range of Bologna. American forces, moving up the main highway from Florence, captured the key feature of Monte Venere and plunged ahead to the outskirts of Loiana, a road junction 14 miles south of Bologna, where they were engaged in heavy fighting. ' Other Fifth Army units were moving at a comparable pace along a B-mile front extending eastward from the Florence-Bologna highway. One column occupied the town of Quinzano, 2 miles east of boiana, while another captured a strategic ridge running Just north of the village of La Selva, 14 miles southeast of 'Bologna. The advances were aided by clearing weather, which opened the way for the Allied forces to bring up artillery and armored equipment for the final push toward Bologna. Despite the heavy rains, which turned the battlefronts into vast quagmires, the Anglo-American troops have been averaging .nearly 2 miles a day, but were encountering increasing German resistance as they neared the wide-open Po valley. As the troops neared Bologna, General Sir Harold R. L. G. Alexander, commander of Allied troops in Italy, broadcast an appeal to patriots in northern Italy to arise and aid in delivering the final blow on Germany. "Powerful Allied forces are crossing the Apennines," he said over the Rome radio. "They are on the point of destroying the German army in Italy. They are on the point of chasing the Germans north from the I'o valley." Alexander told the patriots the German retreat was inevitable and he culled on them to attack from the flanks and the rear while the Allied troops attack from the front. fcfte gaftrrafltft Califomian Thursday, October 5, 1944 5 MONTGOMERY WARD Gus Vercammen Sells East Side Business G\is Vercammen, councilman of the first ward, announced today that he has sold h^ business on Baker street, Gus' Barber and Beauty Shop, lie has been in business there for 26 years. lie intends to stay on the ea.st side.
