Cigar upset in Breeders' Cup By The Associated Press TORONTO — Cigar went out a loser on the track, but a winner in the eyes of his owner, the trainer who beat him — and just about everyone else. "It's been a great run," owner Allen Paulson , said after Cigar finished third in the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Woodbine. "It's probably time to go home with him. He's one of the greatest ever." Cigar lost by less than a half-length as he fin- : ished third behind Alphabet Soup and Louis Qua- ; torze — his third loss in 20 races. Those three defeats, however, came in his last four races. "He's a good horse," trainer David Hofmans said of the 5-year-old Alphabet Soup. "He was a great horse today, and he beat the greatest horse." The 6-year-old Cigar, seeking his second win in the Classic, was cheered as loudly in defeat as he had been when he had entered the track. "It was a great thrill," said winning jockey Chris McCarron, "but taking something away from Cigar doesn't sit well." ; "To do what he did this year — he's still a champion," said Jerry Bailey, Cigar's jockey. Baseball __ NEW YORK — Baseball players confirmed - : Saturday that they have reached agreement With, management's negotiator on a labor deal through the 2000 season, but said they had no idea whether owners would ratify it. Union head Donald Fehr and management negotiator Randy Levine completed the details Thursday in Atlanta. Players already have given their execu 1 tive board authority to ratify the agreement. But it's unclear if the deal will receive the necessary three-quarters majority from the 28 teams. "The deal is reached,"-Fehr said on the Yankee Stadi- '. um field before Game 6 of the World Series. . : "Bud (Selig) just has to decide if he backs it. If : he doesn't, he doesn't. There's nothing I can do." Selig, the acting commissioner, refused to say whether or not a deal had been reached. • Golf TULSA, Okla. — The third round is a charm for Tom Lehman. First at the U.S. Open. Then at the British Open. Now at the Tour Championship. Lehman's brilliant 64 Saturday made him a runaway leader at Southern Hills Country Club, nine strokes in front of Vrjay Singh and Brad Faxon going into what promised to be a windblown and wet final round. "This is right up there with my best rounds ever," LEHMAN Lehman said, after a round in which he made no bo-! geys and knocked in putts from everywhere. Olympics INDIANAPOLIS — William Hybl, a former , prosecutor who helped kick Tonya Harding out of figure skating, was elected president of the U.S. Olympic Committee in balloting Saturday that was as close as a single vote. Hybl, who •' served as interim president of the USOC in 199192, defeated committee vice president Michael" Lenard by less than 2Va points out of a possibly 179.72 in the complex weighted balloting of the board of directors. The 91.04-88.68 count, in the first contested presidential election in the USOC's history, could have come down to one vote by a heavily weighted delegate, or as many as three votes from lower-ranked representatives. The election was by secret ballot. At least two board members generally expected to support Lenard were absent. Tennis STUTTGART, Germany — Top-ranked Pete Sampras increased his winning streak to 21 matches Saturday, reaching the final of the Eu- rocard Open with a tough 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jan Siemerick. In today's final, he will face No. 6 Boris Becker, who defeated No. 2 Michael Chang 6-4, 6-3. The $2,2 million tournament started with a field of 29 of the world's top 30 ranked players. In beating the unseeded Dutchman, Sampras struggled at times, just one day after thrashing rival Andre Agassi and playing what lie called perhaps the best match of his career. The longest winning streak of Sampras' career came in 1994 when he won 29 straight matches.
