'AKRON 'AKRON BEACON JOURNAD MONDAY, APRIT 28, 1930 AVIATION Column Conductor Makes First Glider Flight; Firestone Plane Returns Home; Raack Plane Refuses To Fly; Four Students solo By HAROLD J. TAYLOR GLIDING is first great sport. flight Sunmy glider da yat muncipal airport I am prepared to -join the chorus. flight almost ended unfortunately for the glider, but luck and a gust of wind came in handy, and I pretty fair landing. The strength of the steel tube fuselage withstood the shock of getting down to where ground really was.

The Akron Glider club generously risked its Alfaro glider to give me a hop. Hal Miller, who was in charge, explained the possibility of pulling it up into a stall and washing it out before we started. "The controls are neutral now," Miller explained, as he placed them in the position in which they were to remain during the takeoff. "You'll get plenty of climb with them in that position. Don't forget to nose her down as soon as you begin to lose speed." The eight men tugged at the shock cord and in moment we were off.

The glider rose in gentle ascent. The sensation is much more pleasant than motored flight, with the noise and throb of a motor to destroy the pleasurable sensation of floating through the air. It didn't last long, it is true. it was a first flight, and a thrilling one. The only objection to it that could be found was that eight men had to furnish the motive power--and that is good exercise, if need it.

Members of the you, Akron, Goodrich, and Portage Glider clubs were out in force Sunday morning. The Akron club continued its activities into the afternoon making just 100 flights, 90 of them in the Alfaro and 10 in the BakerMcMillan cadet. FIRESTONE'S tri-motored William Ford by M. TAYLOR Beacon Journal Aviation Editor IMPROVEMENT in my ability as a result of another flying lesson Sunday was not sufficient to lead Instructing Pilot Al Steyer of the Robbins Flying Service to turn me loose, and I have had to resort to stories of pilots who took an unusually long time to learn to fly but were excellent pilots when they finally accomplished the feat, for consolation. Luckily there have been a good many of those.

The lesson Sunday, as usual, consisted of three turns around the field with subsequent glides to landings. (AP)-Prosecuting Attorney John S. Combs today announced receipt of offers by neighbors of Dr. A.

J. Bass, retired dentist of Columbia, to assist in combating a prospective insanity plea for Bass at his scheduled trial here May 26 for the slaying of W. R. Pearman of Columbia in a $200,000 insurance swindle -lot. One offer came from a prominent churchman of Columbia who wrote, according to Combs, that he not only would testify himself that Bass was sane at the time of the slaying, but could get others to do the same.

Wants Death Penalty Despite claims made by Bass and Casper Tillman, an alleged confederate now under arrest at Linn, that the killing occurred in Missouri and Pearman's body was brought in Bass' automobile to this county where it was found March 29, Combs said he was determined to proceed with the trial and retain jurisdiction in the case. He said he would ask the death penalty for Bass.
