The three points came midway through the third quarter. The Gators had the ball for only 3:58 in the first quarter but managed to take advantage of two LSU turnovers a pass interception and a fumble and score three points.

John David Francis hit only one field goal in two tries which gave Florida a 3-0 lead. The Tigers managed to tie the game early in the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal from Brown-dyke. "I read the lips of the guy running the clock, and it looked like he said there was no time left.

But the referee made the call it was a judgement call," said Archer. "This was a typical Southeastern Conference game. It was wild and wooly to the end," added Archer. The Tigers dropped their third game of the year the most defeats after four games since the 1975 season when the Tigers ended up 5-6 with only one win to show and are now 0-1 in SEC play. Florida has beaten the Tigers for the second belief of the Tiger crowd, coaches, and players.

Florida drove the ball 56 yards in the final 1:19 of the game on nine plays. "Our kids played too hard not to come out of it with nothing." said Archer. "We wanted to try to force them to score, maybe get a turnover and come back to win it." The Gators kept pecking away at the Tigers' lead until a 19-yard run up the middle by Smith managed to give Florida its second lead of the game early in the fourth quarter. However, the SEC officials said the horn had not sounded at the end of the play and put back on the clock. Almost! Arden Czyzewski kicked a 41-yard field goal with no time remaining to give Florida a 16-13 Southeastern Conference victory over LSU before a Tiger Stadium crowd of 74,527 here Saturday night. The loss left a bitter taste in the mouth of Tiger coach Mike Archer who decided to go for a tie when the Tigers were forced with a fourth down and four play a minute prior to the game-winning kick. But it is McBee, a rookie on the Seniors Tour, who holds the upper hand entering Sunday's final round of the rich RJR Championship. With only 17 seconds left, Jake Cramer attempted a 36-yard field goal which was off target.

Early in the fourth quarter, with OC holding a 14-6 lead the Vikings drove down to Cecilia's 8-yard line. On a fourth and goal at that point, the Vikes went for a three-pointer. The drive started following Cecilia's lone score when Clay Armand returned the kickoff from the OC 18 down to the Bulldogs' 29 a 53 yards but there was a clip which brought the ball back to the Vikes' 29. Cramer's first field goal attempt was off but a penalty forced the play over. On the second try, Cramer's attempted 28-yarder was blocked.

Rylan Hebert picked up the ball at the Cecilia 20-yard line and raced down to the OC 36-yard line with only 5:44 left in the game. "The blocked field goal was scary but I have confidence in Jake Cramer's kicking and would go for it See OC's Page 8B Vikings are 1-0 in league play. "Penalties and mistakes really hurt us," said Lemoine who is now 9-7 overall at OC in his second year as head coach. "We will not be able to make these type of mistakes against Port Barre next week and win." Lemoine was especially displeased with his teams effort in the second half. "We were penalized eight times for 80 yards, but 65 of those yards came in the second half," said Lemoine.

Next week's game against Port Barre, to be played in Opelousas, could be for the district championship but Lemoine down played it. ''This is going to be a tough district," said the Viking coach. "There are three or four teams that have a shot of winning this district. It is going to be tough for any team to go through the district undefeated." Opelousas Catholic did all of its scoring in the first half, leading 14-0 at halftime. But, the Vikings twice had chances to add to their lead.

Right before the half ended OC Opelousas Catholic's eight-point win over Cecilia doesn't tell the true story. "I feel we were better than eight points," said Opelousas Catholic coach Dwayne Lemoine following the Vikings 14-6 District 7-AA victory over Cecilia here at Donald Gardner Stadium Friday night. "We missed a couple of scoring said Lemoine. "When we get close like we did against Cecilia, we've got to score points. We can't leave a team like Cecilia in the ball game like we did." Cecilia was the preseason pick by the coaches to win the District 7-AA championship.

"They are a good ball club and they have played some tough folks," said Lemoine of the 1-5 Bulldogs. Cecilia, a Triple-A school last year, is 0-1 in leauge play. Coach Dwayne Lemoine, in his second year as head coach at OC, has his players believing they can win something the Vikes had lost in recent years.

This year's OC team looks like the ones of the 70's when the Vikings were a powerhouse in Double-A. Perron, now the winningest active coach in St.Landry Parish, has done an outstanding job in making the Red Devils a winner year-in and year-out. Come Friday night, one of the largest crowds of the season should be on hand at Donald Gardner Stadium to witness a classic high school contest OC and Port Barre. A battle between two teams destin to have success in 1989. Roger Brandt is sports editor of the Daily World.

Overall, OC holds a 19-7 edge in the series. Perron, who is in his 12th season as head coach at Port Barre, is 5-6 against OC. In Perron's early years at Port Barre, the Red Devils had it tough against OC. In fact, Perron lost five straight before getting a win over OC. Perron's 1983 Port Barre team gave him his first win over OC, an 18-6 victory.

The win by Port Barre was also its first over OC since 1959 when Joe Tuminello was coach-tag for the Vikings ending a streak of 12 straight defeats. From 1983 to 1986 Port Barre posted four straight wins. The only win for OC against Port Barre in the last six years came in 1987 (22-0). It's a game which the fans of both schools look forward to each season. And, this year's game will carry even more meaning since it could be for the 7-AA championship.

Both teams were ranked in the Top 10 before dropping out as each have had one loss. The Prior to the start of the 1989 football season Port Barre was expected to challenge Cecilia for the District 7-AA championship as the Bulldogs, moving down from the Triple-A ranks, were made the favorite. But, Cecilia isn't living up to its preseason rating. Port Barre, however, has lived up to Its preseason bill as the Red Devils sport an impressive 5-1 record losing only to Class A power Catholic High of Pointe Coupee. The surprise team in District 7-AA has been Opelousas Catholic as the Vikings, picked second to last In the preseason poll, knocked off Cecilia 14-6 In Friday night's district opener.

The win gave OC the same record as Port Barre. And, these two St. Landry Parish heated rivals will clash Friday night at Donald Gardner Stadium for the 27Ui time in what could be for the district championship since Cecilia is probably out of the race for the title. Port Barre opened district play with a 21-8 victory over Church Point on the Bears' home field last Friday night. The Vikings and Red Devils have been playing annually since 1977 but the series dates back all the way back to 1951.

From 1977 to 1982 the series was dominated by OC as the Vikings won six straight. From-1983 to 1988, Port Barre has won five out of the last six games, Including a 33-12 decision last.
