The young guest pianist Andre Watts was born in Nurnberg, Germany, the son of an American Negro GI and his Hungarian wife, Andre lived in Europe, mostly around army posts, until he was eight. Then the family moved to Philadelphia, and hie was enrolled at the Musical Academy. At the age of nine, he won out over 40 young pianists to play a Hayden concerto for one of the Youth Concerts of the Philadelphia Orchestra. It was in February of 1963, less than nine years ago, that Leonard Bernstein introduced him as soloist for a New York Philharmonic Young Peoples Concert on nation-wide television. Due to a recent illness, Watts had canceled two weeks of concerts, including the opening concerts of the New York Philharmonic under their new musical director Pierre Boulez. Boulez had chosen Watts especially for his debut concerts, but Watts had to cancel because of his health. However, Watts will be appearing, as scheduled, in Wichita.
